Newsprint is Wasted on the Young

lock · 04/22/05 08:19AM

With all the recent hand-wringing about the younger generation abandoning newspapers, we thought we'd go to the source of the problem: a young person who hates newspapers. Young person, why do you hate newspapers so?

Who's The Boss At 'The Week' Luncheon?

Jessica · 04/15/05 08:24AM

Editor & Publisher queen bee Jesse Oxfeld enlightens us all on the matter of yesterday's "Conversations" luncheon on Mideast peace, hosted by The Week. Per usual, the attendees were more interesting than the speakers (precisely why we tend to ignore these events). In that vein, Oxfeld discusses the "What?" guests in the audience, whose mere presence at such a gathering makes one exclaim "What?" in disbelief:

Building on Brand Bradley

Haber · 04/14/05 11:40AM

CNN is reporting that pro-baller and senator (and Democratic party presidential dream date) Bill Bradley has just signed up to host a show for Sirius Satellite Radio:

'New Yorker' Staff Gobbles Up National Magazine Awards

Jessica · 04/13/05 04:13PM

BREAKING: The The New Yorker is the best magazine EVER! Remnick and Co. picked up 5 Ellies at the Waldorf this afternoon, really kicking the shit out of Real Simple and Men's Health. (Don't snicker — it's harder than you think!) Our friend Sy "The Larger Truth" Hersh even snagged a "Public Interest" prize for his three articles on the madcap antics at the Abu Ghraib Spa & Resort. Or at least that's what the ladies from Glamour were calling it.

Gallagher and Dworkin: The Odd Couple

Haber · 04/13/05 08:31AM

Andrea Dworkin must've left Maggie Gallagher some money in her will: how else to explain why the pay-for-play "marriage expert" would write such an elegiac column in honor of the firebrand feminist? Here's what Maggie had to say:

One Step Closer To World Peace: The New National Enquirer

Jessica · 04/08/05 04:25PM

Click to enlarge, because knowledge is power.
Look outside; do you see the difference? Can you feel the magic? Children are dancing in the street. Old women are weeping and dancing with joy. Soldiers are carrying carnations instead of grenades. Things have changed out there, and we'll tell you why: the National Enquirer has relaunched, positioning itself somewhere in the gray area between its original self, Us, and People. Praise Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

Like Pulling Celebrity Stories Out Of A Hat

Jessica · 04/08/05 12:00PM

You know what's funny? When shows like Access Hollywood claim to have a rebuttal from, say, Brad Pitt regarding his "relationship" with Angelina Jolie:

Remainders: Fact-Checking Is Such A Hassle

Jessica · 04/05/05 04:40PM

· Remember the Wired report about the pervy UK practice of "toothing," in which people used their Bluetooth devices to organize sexual encounters on commuter trains? Well, if you do, you shouldn't anymore, as the whole thing was an elaborate hoax. [Hanasiana via Gizmodo and Fleshbot]
· Former smoker Peter Jennings is diagnosed with lung cancer. We're feeling sensitive today, so no jokes. Aren't we mature? [Bloomberg]
· This might be the most adorably weird David Sedaris moment ever documented on the internerd. [Productshop NYC]
· More reports from the precious wedding of undershirtless talking head Tour , where everyone had their own song to which they walked down the isle: "writer Nelson George, walked out to what else? Marvin Gaye's 'Trouble Man.'" [VV]

Featuring An All-Star Cast

Haber · 04/05/05 03:23PM

We're pretty sure this is the only chart ever in the history of humankind to track the Pope, Rasputin, Pat O'Brien, SpongeBob SquarePants, Dr. Laura, Yoda, Richard Gere, and Jesus.

Fun With Lexis-Nexis: The Keren Ann Hype Factor

Jessica · 04/05/05 02:40PM

Today's Voice has the inevitable feature on the French musical invasion, led by media darling du jour Keren Ann. Hmm, haven't we heard of this woman before? Like, a lot? Using our new little Lexis-Nexis toy (which we love so much, we're never buying another magazine again!), we learn that Keren Ann has had no less than 70 mentions in the past 60 days. Not bad for a relatively indie (we use the term semi-ironically), Gallic chanteuse.

The Inner Circle Gala, Where Media Souls Go When They Die

Jessica · 04/04/05 02:48PM

You should probably be grateful that this picture didn't come out too well. No one should have to see this sort of thing.
For whatever reason, I was allowed inside the 2005 Inner Circle, an event in which City Hall reporters willingly don costumes and perform a two-act musical lampoon of the mayor. Take the world's worst high school musical experience, subtract 50% of its quality, and cast the production with City Hall reporters, and you have both visual and auditory hell. Add Mayor Bloomberg, Senator Schumer, and free alcohol, and you've got a special-ed version of the Gridiron Gala.

Barry Diller Buys The Past

Haber · 04/01/05 07:54AM

According to The New York Times, Barry Diller has just laid out $2 billion for Ask Jeeves. Yes, you read that right: two billion bones for a website you probably haven't gone to since 1999.

An Open Letter to 'NYP' and 'NYDN'

Haber · 03/31/05 01:37PM

Hey Kids,
Lately you've both been expending a lot of time and energy denouncing each other. As much as we all love a good feud, this one is becoming drawn out and boring.

Some Of Our Best Friends Are Loathsome

Haber · 03/30/05 03:50PM

The New York Press is not only still in business (kineahora, poo-poo-poo), it just came out with its annual '50 Most Loathsome New Yorkers' list. Think of it as the inverted funhouse mirror version of Vanity Fair's 'Power List': You do not want to be up in this piece.
