Looking At The Look Book

Jessica · 05/03/05 05:31PM

Shield your eyes, delicate readers, because this week's edition of the Look Book features EXACTLY the sort of person that makes you choke on your tongue. Fredrica S. Friedman, President of Fredrica S. Friedman, Inc., is a literary agent who lunches at Michael's, wears blue tights, and believes a Fendi bag goes with everything. To each their own, but Intern Alexis has nonetheless rounded up the testosterone team of Evan Hughes, Lucas Hanft, and Jim Burke to help Fredrica and her Fendi. Their illuminating commentary after the jump.

This week, New York magazine's Look Book provides comic relief in the form of business student, Claudio di Blasi, and fashion showroom assistant, Ilaria Castelli. Claudio reveals that the United States doesn't have Dandop jeans and because of that he is "sorry for us." You should be, Claudio. Not because of the jeans but because we're fat and cannot leave our house without the assistance of a crane. And every night we masturbate while sobbing. After the jump, Intern Alexis gets some answers from Mike Albo, Marika Knowles, and Alexis Goldberg. —NH

Glazing Over the Glossies

See what happens when you fail to win a single Ellie at the National Magazine Awards? Those snarkologists at the Post turn on you like jackals and start ripping off bits of flesh.

In this week's edition of the Look Book, New York magazine abandons the "commoners" in favor of a bona fide fashionista, designer Cynthia Rowley. Rowley loves to wear some of her older clothes, which she likens to putting "defibrillator paddles on an old black dress." To comment on Rowley's defibrillator paddles are back-alley fashion consultants Lauren Mechling, Brian Ulicky, and Suzie Lee. Their analysis of Rowley's je ne sais quoi follows.

Amy Sohn: Columns Are For Projecting!

Our super-favoritest married columnist who still inexplicably writes about dating for New York mag, Amy Sohn, needs your help:

In this week's very special edition of the Look Book, New York mag hunts down the intolerably hip Mark Recker, a record label assistant who hangs at Northsix and wears Club Monaco (no, you may not punch the Look Book). Mark's label works with Evanesence and Creed, so it should be hardly surprising that Mark loves him some Kiehl's. There was only one man worthy of sitting on Intern Alexis' stylist roundtable for commentary: Jonathan Cheban. After the jump, J-Chebs and Daniel Felder weigh in on Mark Recker's style.

New York magazine's Look Book never ceases to amaze us, in a "where do they FIND these people?" sort of way. This week, they've managed to hunt down Julie Erdman, a sophomore at NYU whose single outfit is probably more expensive than your rent (obviously, we envy her). She is not, however, an Olsen. A self-described "culture-phile" majoring in French lit, Julia's goals aren't too high: she'd like to be a Times restaurant critic. Total waste case, sigh. After the jump, Intern Alexis gets some stylish input from this week's roundtable of Tom Scocca, Scott Claffee, and Jeanette Au.

Some anxiety-addled, manic-depressive New Yorkers are in for a disturbing treat from this week's Look Book: your psychologist, Dr. Rosalie Mishkin, is featured. The lucky lady, who enjoys color-coordination and clothing from Lands' End, is stopped regularly by strangers who have to tell her how beautiful she is. In her weekly grilling of the fashionista roundtable, Intern Alexis gets some fashion therapy from Josh Tager, Nikki Darling, Jocelyn Carmichael, and Jonathan Swerdloff (no relation).

After a weeklong drought, New York magazine's Look Book is back with Karim Sanders and his Baby Amir should wrap. By day, Karim is an NBC parking attendant and a travel booker for musical acts; by night, the man is a Bergdorf junky with a Barneys habit on the side. After the jump, Intern Alexis grills Christian Lorentzen, Tiffany Gong, and Alexis Oliver for the input on Karim's style and suggestion on how to bring a smile to Amir's face.

This week's edition of New York mag's Look Book assaults us with an introduction to Demetrise Washington, who prefers shopping at Jill Stuart over eating lunch. Demetrise works at a brokerage house, is reading Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, but she's not quite sure who Eliot Spitzer is. Before you think she's a complete anomaly of the finance world, remember — her hat is made from fox and was purchased in Midtown. After the jump, Intern Alexis grills copy editor Sam Frank, VH1 producer Raphael Rodriguez, and research assistant Jonas Oransky for the male perspective on Demetrise's style.

Kurt Andersen: Olde Media Fellow

Haber · 03/07/05 09:00AM

In his latest New York Magazine column, Kurt Andersen takes on everything from Dan Rather to bloggers and asserts his old media bona fides. We're not talking about his fond remembrance of his TIME Magazine-era Selectric typewriter and 6PM cocktail: we're talking about really old media:

This week's Look Book is a Turkish triple threat: Mila, Sandra, and Tara Erer are the most fashionable ladies this side of Istanbul, and they'll be sure to let you know it. While waxing philosophical about the safety of her daughters while they pursue their New York educations, Sandra flaunts her Marc Jacobs coat and plugs her stores (Acqua Verde, all over Turkey — check 'em out!). After the jump, Bill Schulz, Ross Clark, and Grant Ginder give Intern Alexis their unsolicited opinions (none of which reflect the opinions of the Gawker staff, might we add) on the ladies Erer.

In the latest edition of New York's Look Book feature, we meet the lovely Duane Littles, an actor who's been on Chappelle's Show and also designs random pieces of clothing. Duane's "over" trucker hats, thankfully, but he's still recovering from a phase involving womens' handbags. Now he likes to wear young girls' clothes — but who doesn't? After the jump, Intern Alexis asks Keaton Clark and Laura McDonald to do their best Robert Verdi impressions and give us their input on Duane's style.

Looking At The Look Book

This week in New York's Look Book, we're treated to a stunning find: the rare and mysterious theater actress. (Oooh, aaah!) Sara Gettelfinger is currently performing Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with John Lithgow and, when she's not singing and dancing her way to Broadway stardom, she's stealing tote bags from her mom's closet. While we don't really fancy our mothers' Brighton bags, who are we to judge? After the jump, Intern Alexis rounds up the masculine trio of Adam Rathe, Tony Herman, and Frank Woodworth for some hard-hitting fashionalysis.

Atlas Shrugs

Haber · 02/14/05 12:07PM

This week, New York runs an excerpt from James Atlas' forthcoming memoir My Life in the Middle Ages: A Survivor's Tale, all about a subject very close to the author's heart: failure. Particularly the sort of failure that befalls a Harvard-educated, former staff writer for TIME, editor for The New York Times Magazine, head of his own book imprint, National Book Award nominee, esteemed biography of Saul Bellow who live on the Upper West Side. Yeah, you know the kind of failure we can all identify with.
