Daily News Mini-Putsch

Gawker · 04/01/04 12:12PM

In what we presume is not an April Fool's joke, executive editor Michael Goodwin is said to be out at the NY Daily News. Reportedly, he'll stay on as an "editorial columnist," which is usually code for all sorts of things, ranging from "we can't fire you" to "you suck at your job but we really like you" to "No don't quit even though you're not going to get promoted." (Goodwin had long aspired to run the tabloid; this March, as editor-in-chief Edward Kosner was supposed to officially leave the DN, rumors originally had it that Goodwin would be named to the top dog spot. Guess not.)

Stern Goes Off the Air in NYC

Gawker · 04/01/04 10:48AM

This morning, WXRK took Howard Stern off the air, citing fear of the FCC, and replaced Stern with a long hideous morning of recapping American Idol and spinning Beyonce. The best part: Channel 11 fell for it and reported it as breaking news. Heh.

Media Bubble: Llonely Lloyd

Gawker · 04/01/04 09:47AM

· Lloyd Grove — who easily made it into the top 20 on NY Press's Most Loathed New Yorkers list this week — won't discuss the circulating rumors that he's been left by long-time lover Amy Holmes. (Holmes, incidentally, should not be confused with A.M. "Amy" Homes, the author and alleged woman-lover.) We hear that Lloyd's being left by his assistant in gossip, too, one Elisa Lipsky-Karasz. [Richard Leiby]
· Two more Omnimedia staffers abandon Martha for less troubled publications. [Keith Kelly]
· Editor-in-chief Joe Dolce explains the ethos of the Star: "If we were a tabloid, we would have just done, 'Look at how fat Kirstie Alley is,'" Dolce said. "Instead, we found friends trying to help her, we talked about this is what led to her problem, this is how she s trying to solve it. We added a level of depth. We could have just said, She s a fat pig.'" Keep telling yourself that, Joe. [AP]

Gaysians v. Details

Gawker · 03/30/04 05:38PM

The gaysians are up in arms about a recent "gay or Asian?" spread in the April Details. They've shot off a big memo of complaint to Details editor (and chief magazine-homosexualizer) Danny Peres. Sure, the Asian American Journalists Association thinks it's "tired" to utilize cliches about Asians and gays — but then, shouldn't they avoid tired lingo like "tired" if they're so against gay stereotypes? From their memo:

Timesian Verbs

Gawker · 03/30/04 10:43AM

Jack Shafer publishes verbs made from the names of New York Times editors and reporters. (Our favorite, taken from the legendary NYT spokesbot: "To Mathis: To use active, vigorous language to say nothing in particular.")

This Week's Worst Press Release

Gawker · 03/30/04 10:26AM

I've read this press release three times and I have no fucking clue what they're talking about. Something about former writer Candace Bushnell, the world's most expensive pen (covered in 4810 diamonds!), the Guinness Book of World Records, and... Marcia Gay Harden. Congratulations to Nike Communications on This Week's Worst Press Release!

NYT: What Is This 'Internet'?

Gawker · 03/30/04 08:41AM

Unbeknownst to me, the New York Times has an in-house start page, presumably for use in the news room. The Navigator, as it's called (that's so space-age! what is it, 2009?), is a long list of fairly dull but pretty useful links. (Sometimes not: Ask Jeeves? Is that stupid butler still cluttering the internet?)

Amanda Hesser's Autograph

Gawker · 03/29/04 09:55AM

Our latest obsession, NYT restaurant critic Amanda Hesser, isn't much of a sentimentalist. A book-loving reader reports:

Media Bubble: More Tabloid McCarthyism

Gawker · 03/26/04 10:23AM

· Us Weekly snags top editor at UK's OK; Nicola McCarthy will start at the end of April, her goal to bring some of that British tabloid class to Us. [Keith Kelly]
· The Times ignores ex-executive editor Howell Raines 20,000 word Atlantic Monthly rehash of the you-know-who plagiarism incident. According to the NY Daily News, NYTers were horrified by the Raines piece... but trust us, there's folks inside who remain Raines loyalists. [Paul Colford]
· Ashleigh Banfield, the Punky Brewster newscaster, is out at NBC. [Lloyd Grove]
· CNN's evening bloodbath continues as second producer quits. [Page Six]

Elle Girls: More Aiming, Less Chatting

Gawker · 03/25/04 10:13AM

We've gotten fresh complaints about the bathroom habits of the girls at Elle. Yes, rebuttals are welcome, but it sounds like you deserve this public warning. Your neighbors say:

Raines: The Times Returns to Status Quo

Gawker · 03/24/04 01:49PM

Okay, one last bit from ex-Timesman Howell Raines writing in the May Atlantic, and then it's back to celebrity trash, I swear. But Raines doesn't get to the point til the very end of his 20,000 word extravaganza — and do you know how long ago I last actually read 20,000 words? I'm missing so much TV right now.

Ariel Kaminer, Report To Torture Room 403 Immediately

Gawker · 03/24/04 11:21AM

Today's Observer reports that Ariel Kaminer, an editor at Arts & Leisure, has transgressed by writing for Adam Moss at New York mag. Times spokesbot Catherine Mathis says chillingly that "She has been familiarized with our policy." You might imagine that somewhere in a basement on 43rd Street, Kaminer is struggling in very slow motion to free herself from an iron maiden.

Media Bubble: More Commuter Papers TK

Gawker · 03/23/04 10:26AM

· New York to get another unreadable free paper to compete with the highly-ignored amNewYork. [Paul Colford]
· The Onion got a vote for a Pulitzer in 2002. [Joe Strupp]
· Lou Dobbs is no Cassandra: outsourcing spreads as Builder.com gets new writing staff in India. [Robin Miller]
· Clear Channel's political donations: 42K to Bush, 1.75K to John Kerry. [Jim Hopkins]
· Advertisers say that the current FCC indecency crackdown will eventually help cable and satellite kick network TV's ass. [Jeff Jarvis]

Letter From the Editor: The Cargo Manpurse

Gawker · 03/22/04 04:55PM

I have heard from a number of men that you would prefer I did not mock Cargo, the new men's shopping magazine. You like the mag's cut-to-the-chase tone, its informative product labelling, its careful skirting (no pun intended) of the minefield of metrosexuality. It makes you want to buy crap, and you love it for that.

The Martha Stewart Cliche: It's a Really Crappy Thing

Gawker · 03/22/04 12:56PM

Writer Jeff Johnson, armed only with Lexis-Nexis and a hatred of lazy headline writers, has assembled a Hall of Shame for those who've used "It's a good thing" in their recent Martha Stewart coverage.

The Bernsteins: Like Father, Unlike Son?

Gawker · 03/19/04 07:01PM

Carl Bernstein — the reporter who co-broke Watergate — has a beef with the sick state of the media, according to a summary in the St. Petersburg Times of Bernstein's Thursday speech:

True Confessions: I Am David Remnick

Gawker · 03/19/04 04:00PM

Since this scammer named Adam Winer got busted for posing as the real Adam Winer, editor of FHM, I might as well come clean. Yes, I've been posing as New Yorker editor David Remnick for the better part of the last year. Sure, I had to pull a real Charlize to impersonate him, but it was so worth it. I've had sex with half of the University of Iowa writing program, and with nearly all of the volunteers at Dave Eggers' 826 Valencia writing program. Pretending to be David Remnick will get you laid like you wouldn't believe.
