Gaysians v. Details
The gaysians are up in arms about a recent "gay or Asian?" spread in the April Details. They've shot off a big memo of complaint to Details editor (and chief magazine-homosexualizer) Danny Peres. Sure, the Asian American Journalists Association thinks it's "tired" to utilize cliches about Asians and gays — but then, shouldn't they avoid tired lingo like "tired" if they're so against gay stereotypes? From their memo:
[T]he particular caricatures being played upon here — of gay men as predatory cruisers, of Asian men as exotic and effeminate (yet always scheming) — are precisely those that have been most damaging through the years. Are there any other entire categories of men you would have felt comfortable making fun of entirely on the basis of sexuality?
Next month in Details: "Bangladeshi or Bisexual?" And in June: "Tanzanian or Transexual?"
