Carl Bernstein — the reporter who co-broke Watergate — has a beef with the sick state of the media, according to a summary in the St. Petersburg Times of Bernstein's Thursday speech:

[M]uch of today's news has deteriorated into gossip, sensationalism and manufactured controversy.

That type of news panders to the public and insults their intelligence, ignoring the context of real life, [Bernstein] said. Good journalism... "should challenge people, not just mindlessly amuse them."

Now, that's a little rude to harsh on his own son in public like that. Jacob Bernstein, former hardcore WWD media gossip reporter and current New York scribe, should totally storm off to his room and slam the door.
