Barry Diller's empire to break into tiny little bits

Owen Thomas · 11/05/07 10:58AM

Telecom mogul John Malone has been putting the squeeze on his old buddy Barry Diller, who runs IAC. So what does Diller do? Break his search and e-commerce conglomerate into five parts. Diller's sticking with the new IAC, which will mostly consist of the Ask.com search engine — oh, and Jakob Lodwick, too. HSN, Ticketmaster, LendingTree, and Interval International are getting spun off. We just want to know who's getting stuck with the bill for IAC's new headquarters in Chelsea.

Reddit throws NYC drinkfest, but everyone's thirsting for Julia

Nicholas Carlson · 11/04/07 04:16PM

EAST VILLAGE, NEW YORK — Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, who sold social-news website Reddit a year ago to the publisher of Wired, brought Reddit's beer-laden world tour to New York last night. And, on the promise of an open bar from 7 till last call, the people showed. Among the crowd a pair of Condé Nast Newhouses and a whole mess of Silicon Alley's scruffiest. What'd I learn? Some tidbits such as that Huffman doesn't always flush and that at Reddit, Ohanian just draws the aliens. But mainly we learned that the people wanted to know: Would Jakulia show?

"Golden Nasty" and other queries you don't want to share

Nicholas Carlson · 11/02/07 04:22PM

Remember Hakia? It's the here-today, likely-gone-tomorrow search engine which allows users to meet other users searching for the same topic. A frightening feature, to be sure. But it'd be worse if Hakia members actually had to meet each other in person. Starting with the obvious, here is a list of queries whose searchers you don't want to meet. (Or maybe you do. Pervert.)

Star editor-at-large Julia Allison and new web venture capitalist Jakob Lodwick spent a record three nights in a row together, in spite of his intimacy issues. Issues which are totally being assuaged by having a girlfriend who plays "Goin' To The Chapel" over a video of the two of them! [Julia's Tumblr]

Jordan Golson · 10/19/07 05:36PM

Microblogging software startup Tumblr raised $750,000 in a first round that included Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick. He's not just a user, he's an investor! 21-year old Tumblr founder David Karp says Vimeo and Tumblr are planning further integration soon. Tumblr has no revenue yet, but has picked up 100,000 users since launching 7 months ago. [Silicon Alley Insider]

Vimeo founder launches HD video, another naked picture of self

Nicholas Carlson · 10/17/07 11:21AM

Vimeo added high-definition videos to its site today. On hearing the news, Silicon Alley Insider yawned. "Streaming videos that are four times as sharp costs four times as much, and video companies are having a hard enough time making a living off of the crappy-definition stuff." I'm just worried this means founder Jakob Lodwick will add HD videos to his large collection of topless photos. What does an attention whore look like in high-def?

What Do The Stars Hold For Fameball Jakob Lodwick?

Emily Gould · 10/04/07 12:15PM

If you know your date and location of birth, you can get a customized astrological prediction for free at Astro.com! They're translated from German or some shit, but they seem to otherwise be pretty dead on. For example, here's yesterday's prediction for Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick, Star Editor at Large Julia Allison's on-again boyfriend, who once let Hampton Style editor Deb Schoeneman put a digit in a secret place inside him:

Emily Gould · 10/03/07 03:35PM

Does Julia Allison have an Electra complex? "He is gregarious, a consummate networker, and one of the best public speakers I have EVER seen... Happy Birthday, Dad. I love you!" wrote Star Editor at Large Julia Allison on her blog. She also posted this picture of her pops, circa 1979. We put that next to a picture of her boyfriend, Jakob Lodwick. And, well. Hmm! [Julia Allison]

Fameball!

Emily Gould · 10/03/07 12:20PM

"I believe I am an early-stage Fameball, and nothing I do or say will change my trajectory. I will attempt to use this to my advantage," Vimeo founder and Star Editor At Large Julia Allison doinker Jakob Lodwick has been quoted as saying. Upon hearing Jakob's self-analysis, our first response was: "we want to quit our jobs." After all, writing about how obnoxious it is that Jakob has declared the process of his fame-accumulation unavoidable is, inescapably, part of the problem. After all, Jakob defines the fameball phenomenon as "individuals whose fame snowballs because journalists cover what they think other people want them to cover." But all that doesn't necessarily mean that Jakob is right.

Jakulia Allodwick Back On, Grosser Than Ever

Emily Gould · 10/02/07 11:55AM

"Every woman in the history of the world, at one point or another, has voiced complaints to the man she's seeing—and it is our collective fantasy (something which almost always remains a fantasy) that said man actually listen to our complaints, take time to reflect upon them, and then—holy crap—maybe... evolve ?!?! This is one of those (tragically rare) instances, and all I have to say is, if every guy so freely admitted his mistakes, no one would get any work done. They'd all be busy having incredibly hot makeup sex," wrote Star editor-at-large Julia Allison about her on and off boyfriend, College Humor millionaire Jakob Lodwick. Guess he got tested for STDs after all! But what was the gallant gesture that finally got Jakob into Julia's good graces and panties? How, exactly, did he evolve?

Owen Thomas · 10/01/07 01:49PM

New York faux-celebrity Julia Allison and online-video entrepreneur Jakob Lodwick, founder of Vimeo, are back together, following Lodwick's public posting of a pseudo-apology on his blog. Of course, Allison had to nudge him by text message to write it. We hear the makeup sex was anything but virtual, though. [Obeastiality]

Jakob Lodwick Is So Into Jakob Lodwick

Emily Gould · 09/28/07 02:40PM

Who was College Humor boy Jakob Lodwick thinking of in this morning's "morning photo" on his blog Obeastiality? (He takes one every morning and every evening, often topless, often in mixed company.) He's posted a quote from one "A.A.," who says "It occurred to me that possibly hundreds of people across the dashboard were thinking (for just a split second) that you were referring to them—I include myself in that number." Gagging yet? Well, take the bucket away from your face: now ain't the time for your gags. We suspect that the real object of Jakob's morning thoughts is his former girlfriend, Star Editor at Large Julia Allison. Wait, former? Oh, hadn't you heard? They're back on!

Julia Allison breaks up with her nerd boyfriend

Owen Thomas · 09/19/07 12:04PM

How typical: Julia Allison, the New York dating columnist and TV personality, has broken up with her boyfriend, Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick. By blog post. And email. Yes, she has, at last, become one with the byways of Silicon Valley. Gawker has the blow-by-blow. So why should anyone on this coast care? Only to note the spread of our unfortunate social mores eastward. The Allison-Lodwick relationship, according to her email, was sexless. The couple, instead, bonded by talking about blogging and business plans. Lodwick never even had a chance to unseat software blogger Joel Spolsky Michael Pryor, the business partner of software blogger Joel Spolsky — yes, he's the one she wrote about — as the ultimate object of Allison's carnal attentions. Jakulia Allodwick Split Sends Internets Reeling

Emily Gould · 09/19/07 09:50AM

My friend Alice likes to say that we're living in the Too Much Information Age, and you don't have to look further than any breakup between any two people who both have blogs to understand what she means by that. And if those two people are both Internet-created pseudocelebrities, you have the voyeuristically fascinating, oddly revelatory theme park of narcissism that is the Julia Allison—Jakob Lodwick breakup.

What Really Happened in Amagansett This Weekend

Joshua Stein · 08/20/07 04:00PM

What follows is like aversion therapy for those who might want to go to the Hamptons. On Saturday night in Amagansett, as Jessica Coen reported today at New York mag, the sundry foodie blogging glitterati gathered for a burger cook-off. Coen was there to support her man Lockhart Steele, our (and her!) former boss at this very website. She looks really happy. That "typical summer share house" was Eater honcho Ben Leventhal's, and it is called "Southfork." Julia Allison was there too! She was cozying up with College Humor's Jakob Lodwick. Later they would have a huge knock-down drag-out fight but then go on to make up. Former Glamour blogger and Gawker enemy Alyssa Shelasky was munching on Doritos poolside, as was weirdly attractive photographer Jessica Craig-Martin. Hampton's Style editor Deb Schoeneman was there, as was College Humor millionaire and (coincidence!) Hampton's Style Contributing Editor Ricky Van Veen. His pictures can be found here; the one above is the only one of Julia Allison topless, just to save you time searching.

Julia Allison's nerd conquests

Owen Thomas · 08/20/07 11:15AM

Those stunned by notorious East Coast nobody Julia Allison's infamous arrival on the Silicon Valley scene might be surprised to learn that she actually has a job. Apparently she writes columns for Time Out New York. About her sex life. And here's a shocker: Allison claims nerds make the best lovers. I know the identity of the geek who gave Allison what she writes is "the best sex I've ever had." But instead of just telling you, I'm going to let you guess, in the comments, who it is. Two hints: It's certainly not high-and-dry TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington. And it's not, despite appearances, Jakob Lodwick, founder of IAC-controlled video site Vimeo. Unless his efforts over the weekend were particularly heroic. So who is the geek stud Allison had in mind? Leave your tawdry rumors in the comments. (Photo by Jakob Lodwick)

Julia Allison turns Valleywag editor straight

Owen Thomas · 08/09/07 11:27AM

I have a confession to make, folks. Remember that Julia Allison character, the New York-based TV commentator and magazine columnist who swept through town not long ago? Okay, yes, I'm technically gay and technically married, but the state nullified my marriage and Allison, more recently, nullified my gayness. We're totally going out. The apparent dalliances with TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington and Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick? Just cover stories. Consider them Allison's beards. I'd post more but Julia's calling to me to reset her Wi-Fi connection. I don't have the heart to tell her I can't program my way out of a paper bag.
