David Brooks: The Meaning of No Meaning

Haber · 01/03/05 08:54AM

Maybe we're still a bit fuzzy-headed after too much cheap New Year's champagne (we had no idea you could buy champers in a box!), but we've been trying to figure out what—if anything—David Brooks was trying to say in his Jan. 1, 2005 column in The Times.

Jennifer 8: Barking Up The Same Tree

Andrew · 12/31/04 12:42PM

Gasp! Another scandal is brewing hotter than a cup of ice water over at the New York Times. Jennifer 8, formerly a Harvard co-ed and currently a Gray Lady reporter, has her very own anecdotal Deep Throat: a quote-spewing, dog-walking, model/actress named "Amanda Tree" who has popped up in two articles of 8's in as many days.

You know what, it's a children's story about being rejected for your looks only to have your inner-beauty discovered.

In this weekend's Times Magazine, Lynn Hirschberg profiles Newmarket Films' president Bob Berney and looks at the challenges he faces marketing The Woodsman, a film in which Kevin Bacon plays a pedophile. Here's Hirschberg on Berney's strategy:

'NYT': Pitch Away!

Haber · 12/14/04 09:02AM

Buried at the bottom of Sharon Waxman's Times piece on the "new" trend of cynical Christmas films (Christmas with the Kranks, Surviving Christmas, Bad Santa , and Home Alone get name checked, but, curiously, a bona fide classic of Christmas cynicism, A Christmas Story isn't mentioned once) is this strange little pitch by author David Thomson:
