Gawker Alum Report

Pareene · 02/11/08 04:39PM

Former Gawker editor Joshua David Stein's Page Six Magazine story on the unhappy end of his not-quite-secret romantic relationship with former Gawker editor Emily Gould leaves neither of them looking particularly mature. It is, poetically, not available online. The best recap may be this one, from Karen, an "avid quilter" and "middle aged blogger." Former Gawker editor Alex Balk gives Barack Obama "the coveted Balk endorsement," because he hates baby boomers, dynasties, and women (j/k!). He also pens the ultimate Radar post. Former Gawker managing editor Choire Sicha interviewed Paulda Abdul, commented on the Stein/Gould affair via IM transcript, and started a band. Jessica Coen: still Tumblring. Update: The full story, with commentary, may be found here.

Julia Allison's Voicemail—Like Everything Else About Her—Is Public, Dispiriting

Pareene · 02/08/08 03:09PM

Every drunk idiot in New York called erstwhile "dating" "columnist" Julia Allison's funny little voicemail number from the front page of Time Out. And Time Out helpfully uploaded their calls. And we're posting them! No one actually seems very interested in dating Julia, as New Yorkers are largely a group with a strong instinct for self-preservation. Highlights include a call that seems to be from the Holy Modal Rounders and this one, from Juan: "Hey Julia, it's Juan, and I just wanted to know if I could impregnate you, alright. Give me a call, at Jancy's house." Embedded playlist after the jump. Oy.

'TONY' Vid Proves Existence Of Happiest, Most Fulfilled Dog-Owning Single Lady Ever

Pareene · 02/06/08 02:47PM

Time Out's Julia Allison-led Singles Issue is online now, complete with a behind-the-scenes video of the making of that sure-to-be-iconic cover image. Also there are essays! One, from Ms. Allison, about being a self-empowered single lady or something. An another, from some non-famous TONY staff lady, dissenting! Ashlea Halpern is not buying Julia. Because Allison's "MARKET YOURSELF LIKE A BRAND AND BE TRUE YOURSELF TOO LADIES" advice is insipid and useless pap, sure, but also because Ashlea seems to be convinced that it only works "if you happen to look like Julia Allison", which surely ties a record for point-missing. Oh, we've embedded the damn video after the jump, in case you have no self-respect. It's four minutes long. She rolls around in bed with her dog in PJs. 'Cause she's single and loving it! Two 'Observer' Boys To Become Honest Men

Joshua Stein · 12/28/07 11:37AM

We hear that over Christmas, two of the New York Observer's all-too-rare bachelor heterosexual reporters stopped being so single! According to office gossip, both nightlife reporter Spencer Morgan and man-about-town George Gurley got engaged! Morgan's intended is Alexis Bryan, the daughter of Vogue editor Anna Wintour's man-partner. This means that Colonel Potter from M*A*S*H*, who is Morgan's grandfather, will be the stepfather-in-law of Anna Wintour. (Crazy!) Rumor has it that Morgan's in-laws-to-be bought their future son-in-law a Cadillac. (Though it might be Alexis' mother, not father, who so gifted.)

Choire · 12/19/07 03:20PM

Over at journalist George Gurley's latest couples therapy session transcribed in the Observer, the saddest trainwreck takes a turn for sadder trainwreckiousness, as his ladyfriend has demanded an engagement ring (which according to her and their terrible therapist, has nothing to do with getting married): "HILLY: You know what I'm sick of? I hate the stigma of feeling like one of these sucker-punched spinster loser Manhattan hags with a million cats and a stack of New Yorkers. I'm sick of it! I just want it done." You know, I ran into George and Hilly the other night and they seemed completely reasonable! But that was an illusion! [NYO]

TMZ is now reporting that Pamela Anderson and Rick Solomon have decided not to get divorced after all. "A source close to the couple tells TMZ they had a huge fight, but have now made up and everything is hunky-dory." Pam, if this was meant to be your early Xmas gift to bored desk slaves, it was not a very good or interesting one. [TMZ]

PETA spokesperson and onetime Jane magazine columnist Pamela Anderson has ended her shortest marriage to date, to noted Paris Hilton-doer Rick Salomon. Their union lasted 72 days. [TMZ]

BREAKING! We hear that Camille, that flower-behind-the-ear-having intern at Black Book who was spotted on the subway by Patrick Moberg and later located via the internet, isn't as into him as he is into her.

"The Average 'Price' That Men And Women Demand To Marry For Money These Days Is $1.5 Million"

Emily Gould · 12/14/07 10:20AM

"I'm a little shocked at the numbers," said sociologist Pamela Smock of the results of a recent survey of 1,134 median-income Americans, among whom "two-thirds of women and half of the men said they were 'very' or 'extremely' willing to marry for money." Mmm? "It's kind of against the notion of love and soul mates and the main motivations to marry in our culture." Oh, those are the main motivations to marry in our culture? We had gotten the impression that televised rose ceremonies, Jumbotron engagements, and fancy gift registries were the main motivations! But whatever, it is kind of sweet that someone is still surprised that most people would enter into contractual prostitution for less than the asking price of a one-bedroom luxury condo in Greenpoint. Money changes everything, Pamela!

'Runway' Jack And 'Chef' Dale Trying To Make Love Work

seth · 12/06/07 01:15PM

The sprouting of a new relationship is always a precarious matter, so it's with a measure of reluctance that we pass along news that Top Chef runner-up Dale Levitski has found in Project Runway's Jack Mackenroth a comrade-in-hunky-arms—someone to curl up with on a bearskin rug on cold winter nights and exchange Padma/Heidi horror stories. Having unwittingly signed a contract that forced them to disclose every intra-network sexual liaison from now until death, Bravo's even-gayer internet arm (if one could even conceive of such a thing) Outzone.com has the saucy scoop:

"Is It Possible To Break Up With Someone Via Blog?"

Emily Gould · 11/28/07 04:35PM

Remember when we shared yesterday's heartwarming meet-cute story of a dude who finagled a lady into bed by pretending to like "indie" when really he liked "alternative" and, in spite of the lies, was still with her a year later? Well, now he's not anymore!

Patrick Moberg Blames Publicity Whoredom On Dream Girl Camille

Emily Gould · 11/12/07 04:11PM

Vime-emo boy Patrick Moberg went back on his word last week when he and his New York Dream Girl, BlackBook intern Camille Hayton went on Good Morning America to tell their story of how he saw her on a subway and was hot for her and then put up a website and then found her. He's previously told his fanbase that once he found his dream lover, we'd all just have have to imagine the rest of their picture-perfect romance unfolding, because there would be "no more updates." What gives? Was it all just a publicity stunt? Today, Patrick clarifies, sort of, his intentions. Turns out the whole thing was Camille's idea!

Patrick Moberg And Camille Hayton Go On 'GMA' To Viral-Market Love

Emily Gould · 11/09/07 12:20PM

This week has been totally "surreal" for flower-wearing Aussie intern Camille Hayton. First her apartment burned to the ground, forcing her to wear one of her mom's dresses to this morning's "Good Morning America" taping. Then Vimeo employee Patrick Moberg saw her on the subway and made a website about it, but though the site quickly became a "worldwide internet sensation," it didn't come to her attention, she said, until someone "that I work with at BlackBook" mentioned it to her. They met last night for coffee and "totally clicked," so, in spite of Patrick's online avowal that "you'll have to make up your own ending for this," they went on national TV this morning to... show the world that you should believe in flowers and rainbows and romance? Or: To raise the profiles of their employers, Vimeo and BlackBook—or their own brands? We'd like to posit that believing the latter theory doesn't make you a cold-hearted cynic so much as it makes you a sentient human being.

Patrick Moberg's "Dream Girl" Is A Homeless Immigrant

Joshua Stein · 11/08/07 03:40PM

Just as the love story between illustrator Patrick Moberg and his now-identified mysterious subway love interest winds its way to its cloying and crushing denouement, "The Morning Show" announced that the young subway-taker's house just burned down. Also, Camille Hayton, as Moberg's crush is named, is Australian. As we knew, she's an intern. (This is like three strikes in our book but whatever.) Also, though this isn't addressed, the only extent picture of her is one in which she clutches a white rose in her teeth, which is just odd.

Emily Gould · 11/07/07 03:15PM

Patrick Moberg's braided, garlanded dream girl has not only been found, she's been identified: she's a BlackBook editorial intern. Of course. That august publication "can't in good conscience reveal the lady's name," but we hear it's Camille. They can in good conscience post this glamourshot of the little Aussie blushing violet, who's skipping work today to be an extra in the "Sex and The City" movie. Of course!

Patrick Moberg Has Found His New York Dream Girl

Emily Gould · 11/07/07 11:30AM

Ipod-rocking Vimeo employee Patrick Moberg's online search for his one true subway love is over! A friend of hers recognized his description of the rosy-cheeked, fancy-braided, flower-haired lass, and put the two in touch. They've exchanged emails, but that's all we'll ever know: "Here's where it gets tricky... in our best interest, there will be no more updates to this website. Unlike all the romantic comedies and bad pop songs, you'll have to make up your own ending for this." Wait, you're going to stop being like a romantic comedy or a bad pop song now, just when it was getting good?

Is Patrick 'NY Dream Girl' Moberg's Love At First Sight "Just Sex And Ego"?

Emily Gould · 11/07/07 10:40AM

Were we wrong to jump so quickly to the conclusion that Patrick Moberg, the mussy-headed dude who is searching for his 5 train Cinderella online, didn't fall deeply in love during the moments of eye contact the two shared before disembarking at Bowling Green Sunday night? "Patrick is one of the sweetest, shyest guys, and this is in no way a publicity stunt. And you know what? Maybe it's not the worst thing to believe in miracles and rainbows and love at first sight on the subway," posited the noted love expert, Star editor-at-large Julia Allison. Well, miracles and rainbows may exist, but according to today's Guardian, love at first sight sure as hell doesn't.
