Krucing Off: The Finale

Jesse · 04/26/06 05:13PM

Wonderful news. A mere six months — nearly to the day — since we got him fired from Conde Nast, where he was a freelance market researcher, Gawker mascot Andrew Krucoff finally has a new job. He'll be the web content developer at the 92 Street Y, which means he'll be writing for the Y's blog and also working on web marketing efforts. Most important, though, it means we'll perhaps finally stop feeling guilty about this whole thing, and that maybe Krucoff's Mom won't hate us anymore.

Conde Nast Marathon Madness

Jessica · 04/26/06 03:29PM

We've received a copy of a memo recently circulating around the House of Conde regarding four organized running events. For those of you who aren't fluent in physical fitness, we've provided our handy translation services:

Si Loves His Chicken Kiev

Jesse · 04/26/06 01:27PM

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. You might have gathered this from the fairly cool portrait collection the Times ran (and teased on the front page) to mark the occasion. And how, you may ask, did Conde Nast chose to mark it? The only way they know how, according to this report from deep within 4 Times Square:

Media Bubble: Scott McClellan Has Already Addressed That Question

Jesse · 04/19/06 02:51PM

• Scott McClellan resigns as White House press secretary. Don't get too excited; not like the next one will be much better. [WP]
• Morgan Stanley reassures that it's not trying to force the sale of the Times Co. No, it's just trying to turn it into another Gannett. [NYT]
• This week, Conde Nast discovers internet video. [WWD (second item)]
• Plame-entangled reporter Matt Cooper to become political editor of Time.com. Which is a prison of its own sort. [Media Mob/NYO]
• Gay Talese is a meticulous writer who misses deadlines. [NYO]
• The secret to good TV news? Banter. (Oh yeah? Then why aren't we hosting Meet the Press?) [NYO]

When Synergy Strikes Back

At right, a subscriber's polybagged copy of Bon Appetit. Which arrived Friday.

Media Bubble: Because ABC's Biggest Problem Is Leaked Email

Jesse · 04/12/06 01:26PM

• Problem-ridden ABC News hunts for GMA email leaker. This much we know: It wasn't Krucoff. [NYO]
• Howell Raines' new memoir is good. [WP]
• Is Conde considering moving publishers around? Perhaps. [WWD]
• "The Feds yesterday arrested two young Wall Streeters and a mole at a Business Week print shop for running a trans-Atlantic insider trading scam that enlisted investment bank colleagues and a stripper to rack up $6.7 million in ill-gotten gains." It's ledes like this that make it impossible to stay mad at the Post. [NYP]
NYT names a new real-estate editor; Joyce Cohen has fun with capital letters. [HuntGrunt]
• 'Times' gets new ThuStyles deputy editor; remarkably it's not a gay man. She is, however, a former Observer m.e., which the Observer doesn't mention. [Media Mob/NYO]

New Digs for Conde; Please Update Your Records

Jesse · 04/12/06 12:45PM

Only because we want to provide you with all the information you might need for effective stalking of Graydon Carter or Anna Wintour, we feel obliged to pass along an admittedly fairly boring internal Conde Nast memo from earlier in the week. It's real-estate news:

'Cargo': Money Well Spent Elsewhere

Jessica · 04/11/06 09:30AM

How sad: Just as the magazine dies, the website masters irony. We'd assume your money is well spent on a GQ subscription, but, well, it's GQ.

'Men's Vogue' Inhabits, Redecorates 'Cargo' Coffin

Jessica · 04/10/06 12:32PM

It seems like just yesterday that we were mourning the loss of Cargo, but Conde moves along quickly, and there's no time for tears. Given that some believe Vogue editor Anna Wintour may have pushed Cargo a bit closer towards the death knell, lest it become a threat to her babies at Men's Vogue, it's an amusing coincidence that Men's Vogue is possibly taking over Cargo's old space at 4 Times Square. But that's the nature of intra-Conde warfare: divide, conquer, set up new cubicles.

When He Buys Your Condo, He'll Put His Hands Where He Damn Well Pleases

Jessica · 04/06/06 05:11PM

There are many things we love here around Gawker HQ, but none make us feel quite so full of joy as do accounts of New York's media elite behaving like dirty little children. Today comes one such item from one of our most beloved venues in all of Manhattan, the Conde Nast cafeteria:

At Conde, Even the Room and Board Is a Freebie

Jessica · 04/05/06 10:04AM

The Observer points out the obvious, then details it at excruciating length: Conde Nast editors are fucking blessed. Their luxurious salaries and shiny towncars are nothing, really, as compared to their mortgages, which range from the high six figures to multimillion dollar sums, all courtesy of Advance Magazine Group. They've lent a hand to virtually every heavyweight at 4 Times Square, from Ariel Foxman's modest West Village cubbyhole to Graydon Carter's Bank Street townhome (which came with a mere $3.851 million mortgage). As for HRH Anna Wintour:

Media Bubble: Conde Biz Mag Is Staffing Up

Jesse · 04/04/06 01:31PM

• Ad-sales side of Conde's forthcoming business mag is filling up; prez/pub David Carey expects mag to be fully staffed — biz and editorial — by Thanksgiving. [MIN]
• Breaking: More and more people people are reading newspapers on the web. [WP]
• Candace Bushnell, Cindi Leive, Jill Abramson, and Geena Davis win New York Women in Communications' Matrix Awards. [WWD]
• Bill Keller is overly absorbed with questions of self-absorption, says Jay Rosen. [Guardian]

Lend Dumenco Your Ears; He Comes to Bury Truman, Not to Praise Him

Jesse · 04/03/06 12:10PM

This week cranky Simon Dumenco is, for a change, happy. Why? Because Cargo died. It's not that he's pleased people are losing their jobs; it's that he's pleased to use it as an excuse to dance on James Truman's grave. Truman was editorial director of Conde Nast for a bit over a decade, and Dumenco takes this chance to recap his career:

Today in Old Media Hand-Wringing: The Internet Is Gonna Be Big

Jesse · 04/03/06 11:28AM

• A discovery at Conde Nast: It's a good thing for print magazines to also have websites! "You gain a broader audience and more loyalty from your subscribers if you extend the experience into the Web," says Advance.net president Steven Newhouse. Who knew?

At Least One 'Cargo' Staffer Scores New Conde Job — And You'll Never Guess Which One

Jesse · 04/03/06 10:53AM

Last week we noted that despites bosses' assurances to the contrary, most of the newly soon-to-be unemployed Cargo staffers weren't having much luck finding other jobs within Conde Nast. Today, however, WWD carries the heartwarming story of one Cargo vet who has indeed obtained other employment within Si's house of magazine-y fun:

'Cargo' Still Dead, Unemployment Looms Over Dark Horizon

Jessica · 03/29/06 04:31PM

A tipster writes to tell us that despite what newly deposed Cargo staffers may have been told, finding a new job within the halls of Condé might not be as easy as one would hope. Though we can't exactly confirm much of this, let's just say that we don't find the following completely implausible:
