David Brooks Is Not Coherent
Hamilton Nolan · 07/27/12 09:08AM
Glasses-adjusting New York Times-version-of-a-Republican David Brooks is a highly talented political columnist-craftsman, in the sense that he is able to lay a thin veneer of pop psychology-varnish over even the most cracked glass coffee table of intellectualism* (*David Brooks-style mishmash alert). Today, Brooks puts forth his most breathtaking ideological prescription yet: our leaders should always be doing opposite things at all times.
The Majority of Americans Still Don't Know Obama Is a Christian
Taylor Berman · 07/26/12 06:27PM
Eight out of ten Americans believe in angels. Almost five out of ten Americans are creationists. Thirty percent of Americans either disagree with or are undecided on this newfangled Declaration of Independence thing. So I guess it should come as no surprise that, after four years in office and two years on the national campaign trail, fewer than half of American voters can correctly identify President Obama's religion as Christian, according to a Pew survey.

Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi (pictured right) found a way to make competing in the Olympics even more impressive: by doing so while eight months pregnant. Suryani will represent Malaysia in the 10-meter air rifle competition, which should, at the very least, move Shooting up in the rankings of Most Important Olympic Events.

Perennial disease magnets JFK and LAX took first and second place, respectively.

Rich Juzwiak · 07/24/12 03:00PM
I imagine that in the past, Fire Island provided a real sense of security for gay men (and women – they're there, just mostly confined to Cherry Grove, which neighbors the male-centric Pines section of the island). I can see the former necessity of a place where they could go and be their gay selves without worrying about persecution.

Shoes, dropping, everywhere: British prosecutors announced they're charging eight new and very high profile people with criminal phone hacking in the endless News Corp tabloid phone hacking scandal. The biggest names: former News of the World Editors Rebekah Brooks (a top lieutenant and trusted confidante of Rupert Murdoch) and Andy Coulson (who went on to become the spokesman for British prime minister David Cameron). Five other former NOTW editors and reporters were also charged, along with private eye Glenn Mulcaire, who was heavily involved in the phone hacking.

Louis Peitzman · 07/23/12 09:31PMIt's Time to Tie Executive Pay to Worker Pay
Hamilton Nolan · 07/23/12 02:31PM
In the past 40 years or so, CEOs have gone from earning 20 times more than the average worker, to more than 230 times the average worker. Over the same period of time, unions have weakened to the point that successful companies feel comfortable asking for unprecedented concessions from workers at the same time the company is reaping record profits. What do these things have to do with each other? Everything.
