How To Write For The 'NYT'

Jessica · 03/14/05 10:01AM

An article last Sunday described Mary-Kate Olsen's fashion influence on young women, who are copying her slouchy "ashcan chic" style of dress. The article concluded with a quotation from Marina Albright, a college senior who was shopping at Barneys New York for clothes like Ms. Olsen's. The article should have disclosed that Ms. Albright's mother is a friend of the writer.

'Post' Fashion Forecast: Bare Feet, Etc.

Hey, ladies: someone at The New York Post is trying to tell you something, and we think it has to do with spending more time in the kitchen.

The 'Blink' Generation

Haber · 03/14/05 08:39AM

Finally, Malcolm Gladwell's Blink has ascended to the realm of conventional wisdom, just like his first book, The Tipping Point. No more debate over whether he's a genius or a mountebank: Malcolm Gladwell's thesis is being used to justify the invasion of Iraq and sundry other Bush administration decisions.

Topic A With Tina Brown: Tina To Bring Peace To Hip-Hop

Jessica · 03/14/05 08:30AM

In this week's episode of Topic A, T-Bro, perhaps a bit disillusioned by 50 Cent and The Game's sparring posses, calls upon the hip-hop community to call a truce. Now, if only they knew of Tina's existence...good thing she enlists Al Sharpton and Russell Simmons in her crusade. Before not-talking-about-Jacko by talking-about-how-they're-not-going-to-talk-about-Jacko, Tina also brings Debra Winger back to life and confesses her love of sappy cop drama Blind Justice. Henry the Intern's vomit-speckled review after the jump.

David Brooks: Even More Boring Than You Imagined

Haber · 03/14/05 08:06AM

In his column Saturday, David Brooks took a break from his usual lawn-chair sociology (armchairs are way too solidly constructed and comfortable to enclose Brooks' particular brand of wisdom) to play a new role: eunuch at Plato's Retreat.

Media Bubble: On a Cleary Day, You Can See Foer

Haber · 03/11/05 02:23PM

· Is Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close merely "an overwrought update of [Beverly Cleary's] Dear Mr. Henshaw for the McSweeney s set"? [Editor & Punisher]
· Woody Allen endorses The Week! And since we strive to emulate Allen in almost every way, we do, too. We always read The Week when we're not reading bedtime stories to our wives. [BusinessWeek]
· William Powers is unimpressed that a blogger made it into the White House. Well, wait until a blogger is in a Levi's ad: then he'll be eating his damn heart out! [National Journal]
· Jann Wenner on his pal, Hunter S. Thompson. [RS]

Matt Drudge Takes Up Residency At Neverland Ranch

Jessica · 03/11/05 09:55AM

We know this may be hard for you to believe, but we re rather convinced that The People's Reporter, our beloved Matt Drudge, is biased. Shocking, yes, we know go ahead and grab a glass of water, sit down, whatever you need to do.

Frank Rich to Move to Op-Ed: Everyone Happy!

Haber · 03/11/05 09:10AM

In a memo reproduced on Jim Romenesko's site, New York Times executive editor Bill Keller and editorial page editor Gail Collins announce that Frank Rich will be moving his culture and politics roundelay from the 'Arts & Leisure' section to the 'Op-Ed' page. The best part of the memo is Bill and Gail's endearing, mutually backscratchy tone:

'US,' Seriously

The New York Post's Keith Kelly reports that US Weekly's Janice Min is thisclose to being named AdWeek/Mediaweek's Editor of the Year.

Remainders: Buggers In The Condé Cafeteria

Jessica · 03/10/05 05:00PM

· Breaking! A reader has reported a cockroach sighting in the Condé Nast cafeteria. The offending insect was "hanging out between the peanuts and the bok choy at the Asian stir fry station." Tasty — but did Graydon and Anna fight over who got to eat it? Or did SI bust in and devour the bug before anyone else got a fair chance?
· Because no train of thought is ever too absurd for socialites, some people seem to think the Times Wedding pages aren't exclusive enough. Oh, har har. And my ass isn't big enough, either. [Veiled Conceit]
· Three potential Supreme Court nominees worthy of your support: J.Lo, Oprah, and Janet Jackson's right breast. [Underneath Their Robes]
· Give this guy money, simply because he's totally sick/brilliant. [Save Toby via]

Media Bubble: Hack, What's the Punchline?

Haber · 03/10/05 03:59PM

· Slate editor Jacob Weisberg says anybody who wants to be a journalist can be one. Of course, getting paid for it isn't quite as easy. Ask... this friend of ours. [Slate]
· The effects of November 2004 continue to be felt: Nation publisher Victor Navasky no longer calls himself "editorial director" of the magazine. Editor Katrina vanden Heuvel is now solely responsible for presenting the irrelevance of the left in Bush's mandate America. [NYDN]
· Daniel Okrent to bring his nit-picky love to Harvard? [E&P]
· Perhaps the last "Kenneth, what's the frequency?" joke you'll ever have to endure. At least we hope it is. [Borowitz Report]

Magazine Mascot Deathmatch

Haber · 03/10/05 02:21PM

The new issue of Esquire reintroduces readers to a face that may have been familiar to their dapper granddads: Esky, Esquire's hyperthyroidal mascot. This month, he's been reborn as part of the magazine's first annual "Esky Music Awards." (Sorry, Charlie: No Stones here.)

Naughty 'Times'

Haber · 03/10/05 07:54AM

Not sure what the article accompanying this illustration in today's New York Times is about. Something about a Jesuit college student expelled for an essay advocating corporal punishment or something. We're just a little distracted by it.
