A Brooklyn man taken into custody in East New York late on Sunday has been charged in the killing of imam Maulama Akonjee and his assistant Thara Uddin outside the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in Ozone Park, Queens, on Saturday. Oscar Morel is charged two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, police said Monday night.

This week, Louisiana became the first state to enact a “Blue Lives Matter” law, which makes attacking police a hate crime. Now, New York is considering a similar law. This is the inevitable political evolution of our well-intentioned but misguided hate crime laws.

Seattle Police say they are working with the FBI to investigate a hate crime attack after a transgender person was beaten unconscious on their way home from a fundraiser for victims of the Orlando shooting this week, the Associated Press reports.

A trans woman named Pearl Love says she was assaulted and threatened last Thursday on the 4 train by a woman who also shouted slurs in reference to Love’s gender identity and race. Love captured part of the incident and uploaded it to her Facebook and YouTube accounts “so now you can understand what’s happening in my everyday life,” as Love writes in her Facebook post on the matter. “That happens all the time. But it’s my first time recording it,” she adds.

A 43-year-old Bangladeshi man, Mujibur Rahman, was attacked while walking his 9-year-old niece home from school in the Bronx on Friday, CBS News reports. Rahman said that his attackers were yelling about ISIS.

According to the New York-based Sikh Coalition, a Los Angeles bus driver, who was wearing a turban was attacked and called a suicide bomber this past November, ending up in the hospital. Police, the Sikh advocacy group said, should investigate the assault as a hate crime.

Early Monday morning, NBC Phildalphia reports, the manager of a North Philadelphia mosque discovered a bloody, severed pig’s head that surveillance footage later showed had been thrown at the building from a red pickup truck.

He is being questioned by the Hate Crimes unit. Since the attack, evidence has emerged that El-Amin has had a romantic relationship with at least one man.

A homeless man has been arrested after he allegedly pushed a transgender woman onto the subway tracks in Greenwich Village earlier this week, Reuters reports. Police said Saturday he had been charged with second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime.
