Pot Princess Finishes Rehab, Released Into Suburban Wild

Jessica · 03/22/06 08:40AM

We certainly hope you haven't forgotten young Julia Diaco, the New Jersey rich girl who was busted in April of 2004 for dealing drugs to her classmates from her freshman dorm room at NYU (a smart businesswoman knows there's less overhead if you do it from home). The young entrepreneur and savior of many a self-medicating student was facing up to 25 years in jail after originally pleading guilty, but after completing 18 months of rehab she has been permitted to cop to lesser charges, which got her 5 years on probation.

The Cover Girls of Queens

The latest edition of The Queens Courier — the borough's weekly community newspaper — reminds us again why we're very pleased to live in Manhattan: The sex slaves here are much more attractive.

Lil' Kim Fans Fight the Power

Jessica · 03/15/06 11:33AM

We were unable to get to Philadelphia in time, but it seems that there was a "grassroots" press conference held yesterday in support of incarcerated rapper Lil' Kim, who is serving time for lying on the stand regarding a shooting outside of NYC radio station Hot 97. Apparently her fans feel Kim's had a "lack of assistance" in prison, likely regarding her reportedly leaky breast implants.

Rob the Bouncer on Bouncers

Jessica · 03/07/06 10:32AM

In light of The Falls' bouncer Darryl Littlejohn emerging as a suspect in the murder case of Imette St. Guillen, the media has naturally turned to wondering about the nature of the "bouncing industry." Littlejohn had a criminal record and yet he was working the door; hadn't management conducted a background check? Or do venues just not care?

Cindy Sheehan, Slatternly Security Threat

Jessica · 03/07/06 09:20AM

During a anti-war march at the United Nations yesterday, peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested while trying to deliver a petition to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. As one astute style-watcher has noticed, Cindy was also committing some serious crimes of fashion: exposed mom bra, unstylish sneakers, and ill-fitting, drab slacks. God bless the NYPD for keeping the Upper East Side free from such dowdy terror.

Dorrian Family Bars Not So Great

Jessica · 03/07/06 08:57AM

We're hesitant to write about the murder of Imette St. Guillen, partly because it sincerely scares the shit out of us (that counts as our vocabulary for genuine human misfortune, right?), partly because we're content to let Gothamist ride the beat up to that big Dateline spot in the sky. But as the story develops, it's becoming clear that the bouncer from The Falls, the last bar where St. Guillen, may be more than an innocent bystander in her stomach-twisting death.

The Prisoners of Atlantic Avenue

Jesse · 03/03/06 08:51AM

The city is apparently thisclose to reopening the Brooklyn House of Detention, that hulking highrise jail between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues in Cobble Hill. The move may be necessary to ease imminent overcrowding at Rikers Island, according to the Times, and it will pose no risk for the yuppie-hipster neighborhood, as the prisoners will be kept safely under lock and key. To further ensure minimal neighborhood disruption, immediately upon arrival the prisoners will be issued horn-rimmed glasses, iPods, and, of course, magazine jobs.

Bad Book Omens for Star Jones

Jessica · 02/21/06 10:07AM

When buying on Amazon.com, it's interesting to see what other shoppers bought along with your item of choice. It would seem that users who inexplicably purchased Star Jones Reynolds' life-and-love book Shine also bought the tearjerker memoir written by the mother of murder victim Laci Peterson, a pairing so frequent that it has prompted Amazon to market a package deal.

'Daily News' Goes to the Mattresses in City Circ War

Jesse · 02/09/06 03:40PM

So you know how there's a perpetual circulation battle going on between the Daily News and the Post? And you know how there's all sorts of circ scandals going on at papers across the country, the most notably local example being at Newsday? And you know how the Post keeps gaining on the News's circ margin, but we're supposed to think that because the Posties are incendiary and irresponsible and the Newsies are the good guys, if somewhat plodding?

We know you're all considering the move to the sixth borough — Dumbo is so played out, man — and so we want to pass along this warning about the risks of that move, as noted by Philadelphia Weekly:

Sports Scandal Guessing Game: 'Times' Harasser Edition

Jesse · 01/31/06 04:21PM

We didn't look at this earlier, as we admit we should have, because, well, even with all sorts of sexual-harassment charges, we still figured there's no way hockey is ever interesting. We were wrong. Courtney Prince, a former captain of the Rangers' cheerleading squad, the Rangers City Skaters, who a year and a half ago filed suit against Madison Square Garden for sexual harassment, has an exclusive first interview on the front page of today's Daily News. Among her unpleasant stories is this one:
