The Grim Reaper Works At McKinsey

Nick Denton · 05/15/08 03:48PM

A tipster phones in some bad news: "A friend of mine works at the Boston Globe and says the place is crawling with McKinsey consultants. Everyone is fearing for their jobs."

No "18-1" Book Will Be Forthcoming

Hamilton Nolan · 02/07/08 03:54PM

An update on the Boston Globe's "19-0" book (written prior to the Super Bowl) about the New England Patriots' fictional unbeaten season: the paper's spokesman tells us officially today that there will be no reworking, rewriting, or revising of the project, as it "was put aside after the Superbowl victory by the Giants." That's 128 pages of wasted writing by Globe staffers, and one less book on the shelves for Triumph (ha) Publishing. But hey, if you want something along the same lines, you can always search for the Amazon tags that customers put on the book's page before it was taken down:

'Boston Globe' Now Being Written Exclusively For Old People

balk · 05/04/07 10:23AM

Why is the Boston Globe such a drag on New York Times Company earnings? Well: The rapid decline of print readers, shifts in regional demographics, the proliferation of alternate outlets from which information can be obtained. Also, probably stories like this one, about the kids today and their crazy low-hanging pants.

Media Bubble: How's Your News, MySpace?

  • Tradey mag-man Keith Fox will be the president of your Business Week. Headshots with suspicious head cropping always make us wonder how bald a fella is. That's okay. [Ad Age]

Media Bubble: Norman Pearlstine Is A Doormat

  • In his memoir, former Time Inc. EIC Norman Pearlstine paints NYT honcho Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., as a lightweight for that whole "not caving to federal prosecutors like Time did" thing. [NYP]

Career Paths These Days: 'Globe'ster To 'Slate'

balk · 03/26/07 01:44PM

We're hearing that John Swansburg, video enthusiast and deputy editor of the Boston Globe's Ideas section, will be taking the editorial position at Slate that Bryan Curtis vacated for a writing contract in the greener pastures of Play, the Times's quarterly sports magazine. So Slate, long known as the Times' Triple-A affiliate, gets a guy from a Times-owned property to replace a guy who went (mostly) to the Times. We need some kind of flow chart to keep this all straight. Also, we hope Swansburg was smart enough to take the buyout before he left. Who quits the Globe for free?

Media Bubble: Hassan Elmasry's Campaign

  • Read all about Hassan Elmasry, the Morgan Stanley portfolio manager who's trying to take the Times out of Sulzberger family hands, and the man responsible for tearing Pinch Sulzberger a new one at the late February board meeting. (In PowerPoint, no less!) [WSJ]

'Times' Further Penetrates 'Boston Globe'

abalk2 · 03/16/07 02:39PM

The Boston Phoenix's Adam Reilly notes some cherry-popping in the Globe: On Wednesday, "for the first time, the Globe published a story from the New York Times News Service," which was followed by two more yesterday. Globe editor Marty Baron told Reilly that "[W]e're likely to use the stories that represent especially strong enterprise and scoops—particularly anything that we're unlikely to find from the other wire services we have." See, Globesters, it's not so bad after all: They're not outsourcing your jobs to Banglaore, they're insourcing them from New York!

Gisele Bundchen Victim 2 Of Tom Brady Supersperm?

Emily Gould · 03/08/07 01:20PM

Does Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen have a baby in her tummy? That's what Brazilian gossip site Glamurama claims, albeit in some crazy language we don't know. However, the Boston Globe translates: "would be no more than two months pregnant, but may already have told select friends and family." If this womb news is true —we so hope it is, for reasons we're not even clear on ourselves!—Bunchen joins actress Bridget Moynahan in the knocked up by Tom Brady club, where she's been discontentedly hanging out since shortly before Brady dumped her ass. We would think of a sports metaphor, but since someone far more qualified already decided not to do that, we're going to go with: this guy is like the Kevin Federline of football!
