Salt: Not So Bad After All?
Hamilton Nolan · 05/04/11 10:17AM
For years, so-called "health experts" on the teevee have been saying "blah, blah, blah." That's really all we hear. We block that stuff out. But when we go back and watch the TiVo, they were saying "Stop eating so much salt, salt will kill you and give you a heart attack, just cut it with the salt, what are you a deer at a salt lick?"

Like your grandparents, Osama Bin Laden kept cash in all sorts of weird places. He apparently had 500 Euros (about $740) and two telephone numbers sewn into his clothes when he was shot dead by U.S. commandos, "sure signs that he was prepared to flee his compound at a moment's notice," according to Politico.

Think of a truly horrendous way to die, and then think about this: A South Korean taxi driver who was said to have had "fanatical religious views" was found dead in a quarry, nailed to a cross and wearing a crown of thorns, with a stab wound in his side and whip marks. A police officer told AFP, "We found at the scene pieces of paper describing how to construct a cross and carry out a crucifixion." They also found a mirror placed so the man could see himself on the cross. Damn.

Pariah oil company BP is settling charges by paying $25 million in civil fines over two oil spills on Alaska's North Slope in 2006, and for basically ignoring court orders to properly maintain their pipelines. How shocking! According to a report in the Times, "The fine is the largest per-barrel assessment ever levied against an oil company in a spill case and represents a new blow to BP's corporate treasury and reputation." Yes, it's a new blow to BP's reputation, but it's doubtful the company's rep can get much worse than it already is.

Matt Cherette · 05/03/11 11:39PMIt's only been about 48 hours since President Obama announced that the US had killed Osama bin Laden, and the issue has already been politicized. From Rush Limbaugh's faux congratulations for Obama, to conservative pundits crediting President Bush for the operation, it seems like things are back to politics as usual.
