Happy Thanksgiving From the 1Pursent

Hamilton Nolan · 11/20/12 04:55PM

A reader sends this photo of a vanity plate that everyone can enjoy, taken on a street in Bushwick, Brooklyn. "The front of the car was all smashed up," she adds.

How Will You Defeat Black Friday?

Caity Weaver · 11/20/12 04:45PM

With Black Friday a mere three days away (two, if you go by Target's definition of "Friday"), many people are already feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of leaving their homes, walking into a store, and purchasing the goods they find therein.

Today's Song: Keyshia Cole "Trust and Believe"

Rich Juzwiak · 11/20/12 04:20PM

The solid fifth album from people's diva, Keyshia Cole, Woman to Woman, is out this week and this song is its second single. She's singing her ass off, selling the cliché with the urgency of someone who has collection agencies on the other line. In another era, this would be a huge crossover smash — if not Cole's signature song, it would at least become her "I Have Nothing." Could still happen (anything is possible), but the chances of this going on to be a singing-competition staple are slight. Anthem ballads just don't sell like they used to. Prove me wrong, universe! Please.

Touch Screen 1; French-Canadian TV Reporter 0

Robert Kessler · 11/20/12 04:05PM

What's life without cheap thrills, really? And no thrill is cheaper than a reporter struggling to maintain composure live on television as his world crumbles around him.

R. Kelly's Weird Trapped in the Closet and Its Weirder Gay Empathy

Rich Juzwiak · 11/20/12 03:15PM

"Did Chuck have AIDS?" someone off camera asks Rufus as he's storming out of frame. The setup is a candid interview, maybe for a reality show, maybe for a Maury-like talk show, and Rufus, a pastor, is refusing to answer questions about the man his wife caught him cheating with chapters and chapters ago in R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet saga.

What's a Gift for Someone Who Hates Gifts?: A Gift Guide

Cord Jefferson · 11/20/12 03:05PM

Holiday gifts for adults are dumb. Gifts for children? OK, fine, indulge the children a bit around Christmas and Hanukkah if you can afford it. It's a longstanding tradition in our culture and, if you get them a good gift, like a book, they might learn something. But gifts for adults? Please. Adults should not be asking for or giving one another gifts.

Another former "Mickey Mouse Club" Mouseketeer has died, along with the good old days.

Bad Influences Kathie Lee and Hoda Get Their Boozy Hands on America's Sweetheart Anderson Cooper

Robert Kessler · 11/20/12 02:15PM

On today's pre-recorded Anderson Live, our host with the most let his famously white hair down with co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. While Anderson may be very good at stealing the hearts of middle-aged white women and reporting from war zones, he is not very good at drinking. It took a couple sips of white wine and good ole Andy was slurring like Diane Sawyer on election night and spouting off sex jokes.

Killer Karaoke Combines Singing and Danger, Is the Only Show You Should Watch With Your Grandmother This Thanksgiving

Kate Bennert · 11/20/12 01:45PM

Not since the original Fear Factor has a television show so unapologetically capitalized on our sadistic consumerist tendencies, but TruTV's new show Killer Karaoke has done that all over again and so much more. The hour-long television event (which premieres this Friday, the day after Thanksgiving) features five contestants competing for a grand prize of $10,000 while singing cult-classic hits from the last three decades while being forced to engage in several challenges that could potentially maim if not kill them. For instance, watch this guy sing "Hard to Handle" while repeatedly receiving several volts of electric shock.

ABC News White House Correspondent Jake Tapper Is Here to Talk About His New Afghan War Book, The Outpost

John Cook · 11/20/12 01:45PM

This web site, myself included, has been frequently unkind and occasionally unfair to ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper over the years. So allow me to recant, sort of: Over the course of the last election campaign, Tapper has been among the least obnoxious mainstream-media voices in the Washington bubble. His brief stint filling in as host of This Week was the best thing to happen to that show in years (and I nominated him as its permanent host). But more important, he has written an excellent, unsparing new book about the tragic mindlessness of the war in Afghanistan and the lives of the men and women tasked with waging it.

Where to Find Your Wal-Mart Black Friday Protests

Hamilton Nolan · 11/20/12 01:30PM

Knick-knack monster Wal-Mart is facing an uncharacteristically well-organized worker strike this Friday, on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The company is scared enough to try to get the NLRB to tell the company's own employees they can't protest. Since we can't imagine that that long-shot attempt at crushing dissent will be successful, you should be ready for Wal-Mart Black Friday: Protest Edition.
