Jakob Lodwick disses Peter Rojas, just so we'll talk about him

Mary Jane Irwin · 01/30/08 06:00PM

Ousted Vimeo founder/CEO Jakob Lodwick has fallen into Tumblr-blogged obscurity. Without a scantily clad photo of Jakob and Julia every morning, why should we continue to care about his budding musical exploits? Lodwick must have gotten the memo, for he's taken on fellow nerd-hottie hipster entrepreneur Peter Rojas in an attempt to stay relevant. Lodwick (and everyone else) can't figure out what's so great about Rojas's Web-music thing, RCRD LBL. "They combined the worst way to discover music (genres) with the worst way to organize Web content (tag clouds)." Them's fighting words! At least he has one good point: the only people who think any of this crazy music 2.0 nonsense is a good idea are founders of music websites and their friends. (Photo of Jakob Lodwick by Jesse Winter) Update: Lodwick deleted the post. Luckily, we have a copy.

The Cycle Begins Anew

Splash News asks: "Looking For The Next Britney, Paris, And Lindsay?" They seem to think that the new all of those miserable trainwrecks is this one little blond girl by the name of Leven Rambin. She's on All My Children, she goes to funky places like "The Lower East Side," and she also slept with noted Internet Famous Person Jakob Lodwick. All at the tender age of not-yet-legal! Jesus. Well, good on Splash for warning her. Soon they shall stalk young Rambin across the vast and dangerous island of celebrity before setting her before us on the great buffet table of fame and demanding we feast. BONUS: After the jump, find out how to buy what she wore to The Box! [Splash]

Who made Tumblr's David Karp so famous?

Nicholas Carlson · 01/21/08 03:40PM

"My bf is like, so famous," David Karp's girlfriend Amy notes on her blog. And it's increasingly true. Yesterday found Karp featured in the New York Post's gossip rag, Page Six magazine. Just a few days before that, the New York Observer asked, "Would You Take a Tumblr With This Man?" You'll never guess who's taking credit for all the attention. Here's a hint: She's Julia Allison. Oops, ruined that game.

What Jakob Wants

Richard Lawson · 01/21/08 10:48AM

As a commenter here once pointed out, Star magazine TV pundit Julia Allison has learned the hard way that there's always someone younger and hotter. Apparently, there's always someone more famous, too. Fameball ex-boyfriend and "celebrity" geek Jakob Lodwick has announced plans to befriend young Hollywood, starting with Scarlett Johansson. Better a stepping stone than not a stone at all, Jules.

Where'd you go over the holidays?

Nicholas Carlson · 01/15/08 11:00AM

Cabo, it's supposed to be the West Coast's Mexico. But here's photographic evidence that Silicon Alley entrepreneurs (and B.J. Novak from "The Office," back left) like to play in the Pacific, too.

New Lodwick project for nerds only

Nicholas Carlson · 01/14/08 03:00PM

"The Internet used to be nerds-only, by virtue of how obscure and complex it was," Jakob Lodwick writes. Toward that end, Lodwick's new service Haven, which he describes as a combination of Tumblr and a Web forum "is, and will remain, a private community." A rehash of The Well, in other words, but with fewer Deadheads and more shirtless pics.

Jakob Lodwick's new website launches

Owen Thomas · 01/10/08 08:04PM

Normatism. No, we don't know what the recently fired founder of Vimeo is up to, either. The most entertaining interpretation is that this is the first in a series of softcore geek-porn photo spreads. Unboxing, indeed.

All My Girlfriends

Nick Denton · 01/10/08 04:20PM

When Julia Allison, the Star Magazine talking head, explained her breakup with Jakob Lodwick, she blamed the charismatic uber-geek's hookup with one of her "close friends". One assumed Julia usually describes friends as close, so that didn't narrow down the field. But the former dating columnist wasn't exaggerating. We'd read their public breakup, a smaller Manhattan version of the tabloid-selling dissolution of Bennifer, was messy; and their downtown world incestuous. We only knew the half of it. [Warning: anyone who clicks on this story waives any right to complain about excessive coverage of Julia Allison.]

Nobody Cares

Lodwick doesn't mock homeless, but may in the future

Tim Faulkner · 01/03/08 02:30PM

Jakob Lodwick has burst our balloon: the fameballer has taken time from his vacation in Mexico to deny any involvement with norbum.org and its tasteless homeless fashion contest (although he does reserve the right to make fun of the homeless in the future). Lodwick did create the "norbum" name and has purchased several domain names related to his new startup. It's no surprise that the site was attributed to the Web exhibitionist. But Lodwick says his new startup — a music-production venture, we hear — will not be ready for publicity for another couple months. But when it is, will whatever stunt he engineers surpass the attention he could have garnered by mocking the poor? (Photo by Zach Klein)

Lodwick: Not My Norbum

Pareene · 01/03/08 01:00PM

A clarification: while new media entrepreneur Jakob Lodwick did indeed invent the term "norbum," a portmanteau of "Nordstrom" and, well, "bum," then "register a few domains," he was not, specifically, one of the people involved in the homeless people-mocking site that then went up at norbum.org. Lodwick helpfully adds that he still reserves the right to make fun of homeless people in the future. [JakobLodwick.com, Valleywag]

Lodwick's latest project is homeless humor

Tim Faulkner · 01/02/08 01:24PM

Amateur attention seeker and entrepreneur Jakob Lodwick may be releasing a new project soon with David Karp, the creator of blogging tool Tumblr. Lodwick recently cut ties with both his beau, Julia Allison, and Connected Ventures, the startup he founded, now controlled by IAC and best known for Vimeo and College Humor. Without Barry Diller's backing or Allison's cleavage, how will the pasty, shirtless hipster generate the buzz he's grown to expect but rarely deserves? By mocking the homeless.

Get your degree in JakobandJuliaology

Nicholas Carlson · 12/26/07 12:40PM

According to rough stats from Compete, Connected Ventures cofounder Jakob Lodwick and professional geek groper Julia Allison's joint blog, JakobandJulia.com, saw nearly 14,000 unique visitors in November. We're not privy to the algorithm, but our guess is that might be enough get the pair an A in Jamie WIlkinson's "Internet Famous" class at the Parsons design school in New York City.

Russian love robots want your cash

Nicholas Carlson · 12/11/07 09:30AM

Russian chat forums are infected with software designed to mimic flirtation and lead unsuspecting lovers into divulging personal information, Beyond Binary reports. These Russian love bots have such sophisticated AI, they can establish up to 10 relationships in 30 minutes. Not impressed. Call us when they design software that doesn't take the shirt off your back but instead puts it back on.
