good-deeds

Hamilton Nolan · 12/02/14 03:27PM

Here you will find a link that allows you to write a holiday message to a survivor of prison rape. It's free. (A rep from the charity tells us that in past years, Gawker readers "have been nothing short of amazing." You people are great sometimes.)

Jay Hathaway · 07/16/14 09:40AM

Michael Sulsona, a Vietnam War veteran who lost both legs to a land mine 40 years ago, has been struggling with the Department of Veterans Affairs for the last two years in an attempt to get his worn-out wheelchair replaced. Last week, during a trip to a Staten Island Lowe's, his chair broke down again.

You Would Probably Be Happy If You Donated a Kidney

Hamilton Nolan · 02/12/14 10:32AM

More than 90,000 Americans today are waiting for a kidney transplant. If you're healthy, you can donate a kidney to one of them. And, according to a new study, it's overwhelmingly likely you'd be just fine afterwards.

Well this is heartwarming. When an Ohio coffee shop caught a man on camera stealing money out of a tip jar, they didn't call police. Instead, they held a food drive for him. "We assume that if he was desperate enough to steal tips, he's probably in desperate times," store manager Scott Moses told WKYC.

It only takes a minute to send a free holiday message to a survivor of prison sexual abuse. (The organization tells us: "Last year, we received over 10,000 unique holiday messages – and nearly half of them came from Gawker readers.")

Lacey Donohue · 10/07/13 06:27PM

Glen James, the homeless man who found a backpack containing over $40,000 in cash and traveler’s checks in front of a Boston Best Buy last month, has now received over $150,000 in donations. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, he’ll be moving into transitional housing in Cambridge this week.

Homeless Man Returns Engagement Ring Worth Thousands to Woman After She Accidentally Dropped It in His Change Cup

Taylor Berman · 02/13/13 08:03PM

Last Friday in Kansas City, rich engaged woman Sarah Darling spotted poor homeless man Billy Ray Harris in a part of Kansas City called The Plaza. Harris was holding a cup full of spare change, so Darling, because she felt bad that one time or perhaps because she's always been generous, emptied her coin purse into the cup and walked off, probably happy about having performed that day's Good Deed.

It only takes a minute to send a holiday message to a prisoner who has survived sexual abuse. The karma lasts all day.

Bridal Shop Refuses to Sell a Lesbian a Wedding Gown

Brian Moylan · 08/18/11 11:41AM

Thanks to the New York State Legislature, gay marriages are all the rage right now, but someone might want to tell the owner of Here Comes the Bride, a bridal shop in Somers Point, on the Jersey Shore (the actual shore, not the show). She just refused to sell a lesbian a wedding dress.

Join the Party: Help Gawker Media Raise Money for Same-Sex Marriage

Brian Moylan · 06/02/11 01:22PM

We crack wise about a lot of things here at Gawker, and generally avoid getting all serious and earnest about the political issues of the day. But this month, in honor of Pride Month, we've decided to, earnestly and seriously, throw our support behind something we're truly passionate about: marriage equality. So we're hosting a big fundraiser to support the cause, and we need your help.

Donnie Wahlberg Can Get You a Kidney

Max Read · 04/26/11 08:29PM

Donnie Wahlberg isn't just an actor and beloved member of New Kids on the Block. He's also an organ broker! Not in the traditional, wake-up-with-a-huge-scar-in-a-hotel-bathtub-filled-with-ice way, either: Wahlberg helped a fan find a 100-percent legitimate new kidney, using only Twitter.

Help Skeletor Help LGBT Teens

Richard Lawson · 04/01/11 03:54PM

Once in a while it's good to take a break from the snide and the sarcastic and do something good. In that spirit, we'd like to urge our New York readers to attend Skeletor Saves, a He-Man inspired art show, co-curated by our very own Brian Moylan, benefiting the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT youth.
