Is This Gaddafi's Killer?

Lauri Apple · 10/24/11 04:06AM

This man, identified as Libyan rebel Senad el Sadık el Ureybi, claims to be the person responsible for fatally shooting viral video sensation Muammar Gaddafi the other day. "We grabbed him, I hit him in the face. Some fighters wanted to take him away and that's when I shot him twice, in the head and in the chest," reports Ynetnews. The man shows off a gold ring and a bloody shirt that he claims had belonged to Gaddafi, but that's some pisspoor lighting and camera work going on there, so who really knows.

The Best Four Minutes of Sandra Lee's Ridiculous Halloween Special

Matt Cherette · 10/24/11 02:11AM

On Sunday, the Food Network aired Sandra's Halloween Wonderland, an hour-long special from Semi-Homemade Cooking host Sandra Lee. To say that the program—which featured half a dozen costume changes and nearly twice as many cocktail recipes—was a train wreck would be an understatement. But don't just take my word for it! Check out the above compilation to see the special's most absurd moments for yourself.

World's Leading Trump-Channeler Did Crack Just to Cope

Seth Abramovitch · 10/23/11 11:27PM

Darrell Hammond — the seemingly mild-mannered Saturday Night Live impressionist — says in his autobiography, God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F*cked, that he had to down whole bottles of cognac backstage to "[calm] my nerves and [quiet] the disturbing images that sprang into my head." When that failed to work, he would cut himself. Some of the gashes were huge.

New York Times Issues First 'Angry Birds'-Related Correction

Seth Abramovitch · 10/23/11 09:25PM

In her New York Times Sunday Book Review critique of the hottest book on the planet, Walter Issacson's 630-page biography, Steve Jobs, Janet Maslin quotes a passage in which the author extolls the triumph that is the iPad, as well as the tens of thousands of apps that can run on it. "One that he mentions," Maslin writes, "which will be as quaint as 'Pong' some day, features the use of a slingshot to shoot down angry birds."

Working at a 7-11 during a robbery is a pretty frightening and humiliating experience. Even more humiliating is when the robbers lock you in a freezer afterward.

Arrests Made in Chinese Toddler Death

Lauri Apple · 10/23/11 04:20PM

Two people have been arrested for the hit-and-run death of Wang Yue, the Chinese two-year-old left to die in the street. No word on what the formal charges are; police used the now-infamous surveillance footage to identify the suspects. As much as we dislike how camera'ed up and Big Brothery our public spaces have become, we're glad this particular incident was captured on video. [Washington Post]

Did the Scientology Police Investigate South Park's Creators?

Lauri Apple · 10/23/11 03:59PM

Apparently so: Ex-Scientologist Marty Rathbun has posted on his website the contents of a Scientology-penned document discussing an investigation into the private lives of South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker conducted back in 2006—not long after the controversial Scientology-mocking SP episode "Trapped in the Closet" appeared on the teevee. The Scientological spy memo—brought to our attention by the Village Voice—is just "one of a trove" of docs that Rathbun plans to reveal about the investigation, which involved rooting through Stone and Parker's garbage (scary), using public records to turn up info on John "America's Uncle" Stamos and other friends (creepy), and deploying Tom Cruise to break into their homes, jump up and down on their couches, and shake loose all of the deep, dark secrets stuck between the cushions (terrifying). Tunisians Voted Today

Max Read · 10/23/11 03:15PM

Almost 70 percent of registered voters in Tunisia turned out for an election today—the country's first since its former president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali fled the country in January. Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party (with a "commitment to democracy and women's rights") headed by ex-exile Rachid Ghannouchi, is expected to win, though it may be forced to form a coalition, while the secular Progressive Democratic Party will likely take second place. In Sidi Bouzid, the rural town where the self-immolation of fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi kicked off the weeks of protests that eventually ousted Ben Ali—and, arguably, the Egyptian and Libyan regimes—Tunisians crowded the polls:

Lauri Apple · 10/23/11 03:05PM

Here we see two D.C. transit police officers apprehending a wheelchair-bound man named Dwight Harris by throwing him to the ground with such force that a pool of his blood forms on the sidewalk. Why do they do this? Oh, because Harris was allegedly drinking some alcoholic devil-drink in public.

Lauri Apple · 10/23/11 01:10PM

Today's edition of Parade magazine features an interview with Republican presidential candidate/sultan of Texas Rick Perry, who says he went out to dinner with bloviating birther Donald Trump and now isn't totally sure if President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii or Kenya or on Mercury or what. Donald Trump is that persuasive.

Utah Police Pepper-Spray Dancing Men for No Clear Reason

Lauri Apple · 10/23/11 12:02PM

Looks like police officers on duty at a high school football game in Roosevelt, Utah pulled a Tony Bologna move the other night when they pepper-sprayed a group of about 15 Polynesian fellows who were performing the Haka, a traditional dance, in honor of a relative who was playing in the game. The police also reportedly baton-whacked some of the dancers, just for dancing. Surprisingly no one was Tased or arrested, just for dancing.

Did they even have a warrant, Enrique and Antonio asked? "The warrant," one agent told them, "is coming out of my balls." So... no.

Here's the Clearest Video Yet of Gaddafi's Capture

Max Read · 10/23/11 09:36AM

Libyan news organization Freedom Group just posted this video of the moments directly after Libyan rebels captured former dictator Muammar Gaddafi. It's the clearest video yet of Gaddafi's arrest, and unsettling to watch; as in previous videos, there's no direct evidence that the dictator was summarily executed (as has been speculated), but the footage of a bloody, seemingly terrified Gaddafi being shoved and hit in the head doesn't inspire faith in the restraint of his captors. (Michael Van Poppel of Breaking News, working off this Global Post video of the same scene, thinks that Gaddafi was "sodomized" by one of his captors, apparently with a rifle.)
