Seven Jeans Protects Its Ass

cityfile · 04/15/09 11:04AM

You can tell Seven jeans apart from the denim sold at discount department stores by the price tag, of course. But that doesn't mean Seven is going to stand idly by when someone comes along and tries to sell knock-off jeans for less than half the price at Marshalls. Seven for All Mankind filed a lawsuit last week charging InDesign Apparel and Oleg Cassini with doing just that, producing a line of denim "bearing an embroidered design on the back-pockets that is strikingly and confusingly similar" to Seven's own "distinctive brand," goods on sale at Marshalls locations across the country. Seven says it informed the parties involved to knock it off (as it were), but they've failed to comply with the cease and desist letters that have been sent their way. So Seven is now suing for trademark and copyright infringement (among other things), and asking a court to put a halt to it. Oh, and they're also asking the court to grant them "up to $150,000 per work infringed," which should be about a trillion dollars or so. The full lawsuit is below. Flip to the end of the document to see the two labels side by side and play the role of judge and jury.

Can Marc Ecko Pay His Rent? (Updated)

Hamilton Nolan · 04/08/09 03:44PM

Last month it was widely reported that free-spending, once-cool designer Marc Ecko's empire was on the verge of bankruptcy. Today, we scored an internal memo from Ecko (kind of) reassuring his employees. And another rumor!

Roberto Cavalli Dreams of a New Vocation

cityfile · 04/08/09 11:05AM

The economic disaster has wrought havoc in our lives, yet has been a force for good in many ways too: It's helped usher in a new political era, pulled the rug out from under a whole generation of self-entitled masters-of-the-universe, and now we hear it may rescue us from Roberto Cavalli's fashions! The permatanned designer has been in talks to sell his company, which had him waxing philosophically in a recent interview with Grazia: "I love poor people! I am glad of the recession. Something needed to break. Too many people making too much money. It's good because it makes you think, 'Maybe now I do something different. Is it enough to make happiness through clothes? Is there something more?' I don't know." What cultural contribution could possibly replace slashed-to-the-navel leopard-print satin dresses? The world awaits with baited breath.

Michelle Keeps It Real, Except With Her Eyelashes

cityfile · 04/08/09 09:43AM

As part of the media's professionally-mandated obligation to scrutinize and pass judgment on every last detail of Michelle Obama's fashion choices, make-up, and comportment, we're now down to her eyelashes. Or, in fact, not her eyelashes but a rather splendid pair of falsies, which an eagle-eyed journalist breathlessly describes as "full-on, all-out diva lashes, the kind you normally find on D-list celebrities or in drag-act dressing rooms." The same pearl necklace with different outfits, but flawlessly-applied fake eyelashes: exactly the kind of prioritizing we can all learn from!

Even Johannes Huebl Doesn't Trust Olivia Palermo's Taste

cityfile · 04/07/09 12:06PM

Olivia Palermo's fake career in fashion has yet to teach her much about men's clothing. At least according to Johannes Huebl, Olivia's award-winning model boyfriend, who says that while Olivia's style is "pretty good," her fashion expertise is limited to "women's only." You can expect Olivia to dig a stiletto into Huebl's neck later this evening for expressing doubt in her omniscience, not that this revelation will prevent her from taking full credit for every outfit Huebl wears as long as they're together. The Retreat From Moscow

cityfile · 04/06/09 10:40AM

The image of Russia's rich elite has come so far: They're no longer regarded by the rest of the world as hopelessly ostentatious and flashy, thanks in large part to Dasha Zhukova's stylish ambassadorship and Russian Vogue editor Aliona Doletskaya's announcement that "full-on extravagance, the red lipstick, the diamonds, the furs—all that is passé." Even the new magazine Snob, whose title implies an ironic self-awareness, has helped rehabilitate the spendy, blinged-out stereotype. How sad, then, that Russian Marie Claire's editor Olga Zaretskaya has wrecked everything with one thoughtless comment!
