The Empire of Harmlessness: Hello Kitty at 40

Maria Bustillos · 10/31/14 01:46PM

Thirty-nine years ago in Japan, Hello Kitty, the global emissary of cuteness, made her public debut. She appeared on a plastic coin purse priced at 240 yen, or about 80 cents.

Little Girl Handles Crisis Situation Adorably

Louis Peitzman · 05/19/12 03:08PM

A four-year-old in New York is being called a hero for dialing 911 when her brother was choking on a piece of chicken. The police sergeant who took the call was especially impressed by how "cool and collected" little Grace Varley was.

Happy Easter From Ryan Gosling

Louis Peitzman · 04/08/12 01:04PM

A Twitter account purporting to be Ryan Gosling is responsible for hiding 200 Gosling-themed eggs around New York City. Although it's doubtful that this is actually the actor's doing — he's never been that big on Twitter himself — it still feels like a delightful Easter miracle. Besides, if he's saving people from speeding cars, who's to say he's not helping everyone get in the holiday spirit with a citywide Easter egg hunt?

Baby Seal Tries to be Fierce

Maureen O'Connor · 03/23/12 05:04PM

National Geographic Digital Nomad Andrew Evans visited a remote Antarctic island populated by fur seals, and made a video of the absurdly cute baby seals he met there. Check out the baby seal trying to be fierce at 0:15. He thinks he's roaring with fury, but the sound he creates is akin to a toddler's naptime snore. [Cute Overload, Digital Nomad, @WheresAndrew]

Yes, There Are Two Penguins in First Class on This Airplane

Max Read · 03/09/12 11:50AM

Here's a video of two penguins — Pete and Penny — chilling in first class on a flight from Atlanta to New York, where they were guests at the premiere of Discovery Channel's documentary Frozen Planet. I'm thinking there are two joke possibilities here: something about "flightless birds" and something about how of course penguins would be in first class; they're always wearing tuxedos. Mostly, though, I think all planes should have penguins. [via Yahoo]

Why Not Spend the Rest of Your Day Watching the Polar Bear Cam?

Max Read · 02/29/12 02:36PM

Siku, the Scandinavian Wildlife Park's polar bear cub, has his own LiveJasmin-style webcam. It's only live four hours out of the day, but they've got reruns up the rest of the time, so why not check out early? Unless you are, like, a doctor, there is literally nothing you could possibly be doing right now, in the big picture, that is more important than watching a polar bear cub fuck around. A Pekingese named Malachy won Best in Show at the 136th Westminster Kennel Club dog show Tuesday night, beating out the breed of dog you have even though it's obvious that that breed is the one that should have won.
