Chris Quinn's Expanding War Chest

cityfile · 07/16/08 12:08PM

The Observer has the deets on the people who have been filling up Christine Quinn's campaign coffers. The council speaker raised $620,000 over the past six months from the likes of Daryl Roth (wife of Steve Roth), real estate mogul/occasional literary agent Francis Greenburger, Veronica Hackett of the Clarett Group, and Caryn Eyring who works for Charlie Bendit, the co-founder of Taconic Investment Partners. Arden's Cry for Help

cityfile · 07/16/08 11:38AM

New details on Arden Wohl's arrest in East Hampton last weekend! As you may (or may not) recall, the headband-obsessed socialite was arrested after she defaced the Ralph Lauren store on Main Street, penning the words "Ralphy Lipshits" in red lipstick and stealing a few American flags from the shop. And then? "She was arrested and handcuffed at approximately 2:30 p.m., transported back to headquarters and charged with making graffiti and petit larceny." Not quite as amusing is the maximum penalty she could end up with: A prison sentence of up to a year. [NYO]

Jerry and Jessica Support Schools, Kids and Jews

cityfile · 07/16/08 11:02AM

It's been more than ten years since Seinfeld went off the air, but Jerry Seinfeld still rakes it in: It's been estimated he collects as much as $60 million a year from reruns, DVD sales, and the occasional stand-up gig. Of course, he and wife Jessica know how to spend that money, too. But in addition to their many extravagances (huge apartment in the Beresford, massive estate in East Hampton, hundreds of Porsches), the couple donates a good chunk of change to charity. So which charities are the beneficiaries of the esteemed Seinfeld Family Foundation? Jerry's largest donation was to Scholarship America ($950,905). But he also handed over some cash to other causes near and dear, like the Comedy Cures Foundation ($1,000) and a non-profit that teaches chess to public high school students ($500). Have a look for yourself at the $3 million the Seinfelds handed out in 2006 after the jump.

Behold the Catsimatidis Mobile?

cityfile · 07/16/08 09:22AM

You may know John Catsimatidis as the generously proportioned owner of the Gristedes and Red Apple supermarket chains, or because he's gearing up to spend a record $100 million to try and succeed Michael Bloomberg as New York City's second billionaire mayor. But his real pride and joy? This silver "Lambo" (or Lamborghini Diablo), which is pictured above in its natural habitat, the Hamptons. Sweet ride, huh? Whether the $2.1 billion man has any chance of winning an election we'll leave up to the political pundits. But we're pretty sure that if elected he'd be the first "Lambo"-owning mayor in New York history.

Al Reynolds Sets the Record Straight

cityfile · 07/16/08 07:34AM

Al Reynolds, the "banker" who was once "married" to Star Jones, seems to be taking a cue from Tricia Walsh-Smith! He's posted a video on YouTube to talk about his side of the story and set a few things straight. First of all, he'd like you to know that he's as straight an arrow. All that talk about him being gay? Nonsense, he tells the woman he hired to interview him, former Celebrity Justice correspondent (and lesbian) Jane Velez-Mitchell. He's just Southern! And he cares about the way he dresses! Al's impassioned defense (with very un-Tricia-like production values) after the jump.

Jews and Tattoos: Your Grandmother Lied

cityfile · 07/16/08 06:44AM

Someone at the New York Times is clearly keeping up with the British media, where there hasn't been a single features department in the past week that hasn't tackled the trend piece du jour: Everyone's got tattoos! The Guardian served up a piece about how chicks can be tattoo artists too. (Glad they cleared that up!) The London Times revealed—shock!—that lots of celebrities have tattoos? For its part, the Telegraph took the opportunity to remind readers that body art isn't usually all that clever and you'll probably end up regretting it. But Kate Torgovnick at the Times outdoes everyone with her Styles piece about Jews and tattoos, which explodes the widespread myth that you can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery with tattoos:

The New York Daily Post, Perhaps?

cityfile · 07/16/08 04:01AM

You know times are tough for the newspaper business when sworn enemies come together: "Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation owns The New York Post, and Mortimer B. Zuckerman, the real estate developer and owner of The Daily News, who for years have been bitter tabloid competitors, are considering the unthinkable: cooperation. Representatives of Mr. Zuckerman and Mr. Murdoch have been in discussions for several weeks to find ways to combine some business functions of The Daily News and The Post, according to people briefed on the matter." Dan Loeb Wants to Help the Anorexics of America

cityfile · 07/15/08 12:43PM

You didn't think Dan Loeb had a heart, did you? Not withstanding the hedge fund mogul's rep for writing vicious letters to CEOs and otherwise terrifying underperforming management teams, Loeb likes to give a couple of bucks to charity from time to time, too. At least he was good for $778,615 in 2006. Where did the money go? He gave 100K to the Jewish Enrichment Center and 75K to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The public radio station WNYC wasn't as lucky: The billionaire gave the non-profit $100. The one-time ladies' man does, however, seem to have a bit more sympathy for young anorexic women: Loeb made out a check for $250 to the National Eating Disorder Association. The entirety of his charitable activities for 2006 after the jump.

Jill Zarin Can Read

cityfile · 07/15/08 12:01PM

Paper chatted with Jill Zarin, one of the delightfully repulsive characters on Bravo's Real Housewives of New York City today and asked her the very last question we could possibly imagine anyone asking her: What are you reading these days? "I'm on page 60 of the Barbara Walters autobiography. It's really good and seems very honest." Also: She says she's building a vocational school for orphans in Kenya. [Paper]
