Tanning Tragedy

cityfile · 07/21/08 01:54PM

Still a little red from your trip to the beach this weekend? The Danish Cancer Society wants everyone to know that tanning kills, and that visiting a tanning salon is a very, very bad idea. So they came up with this awesomely scary ad, which you can watch for yourself after the jump. But if you ask us, it may also be the perfect storyline for the series finale of E!'s Sunset Tan.

Jamie Dimon's $300K Advantage

cityfile · 07/21/08 12:35PM

JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon doesn't exactly have a rep as the most sympathetic guy. He's long been known to berate employees, he once got physical with a former colleague, Deryck Maughan, and he's been just as blunt with the press. ("What do I think of our competitors? I hate them! I want them to bleed!" he once exclaimed when asked about his competition.) More recently, he made news after he told Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit to "stop being such a jerk" on a conference call. So it might come as some surprise that he's a wee bit more generous than Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein when it comes to writing checks to charity. Dimon handed out $1.8 million last year (compared to Blankfein's paltry $1.5 million), including a $1 million gift to the University of Chicago and $120,000 to Columbia's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. The full report after the jump.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Michael Bloomberg's Ridiculously Humongous Tie Collection

cityfile · 07/21/08 11:30AM

Michael Bloomberg isn't exactly a fashion plate. Although he's expressed a fondness for all things Paul Stuart and now has his suits custom-made (with tiny holes in the lapels for his apple-shaped NYC pin), he's never seemed to enjoy discussing his sartorial preferences, nor expressed much interest in clothes shopping. (He reportedly sets aside half an hour several times a year to buy things in bulk.) Then, of course, he's had some truly horrifying fashion moments, like a baggy tan shorts and bright white socks combo in 2006. But there is one accessory he apparently has a weakness for: ties! The most comprehensive, detailed investigation into the mayor's neckwear after the jump.

Sour Over Citi

Remember when Citigroup paid $400 million to name the Mets' new ballpark Citi Field for the next 20 years? So will Citi's ongoing troubles change anything? "Losses or not, there is no stopping the Citi Field deal, even if some of its laid-off employees may not be able to afford to take their families to a game, or even if some of them could have been retained with the $20 million a year being spent on baseball." It Isn't Too Late to Book Your Trip to Beijing!

cityfile · 07/21/08 08:59AM

If you haven't made arrangements to travel to the Olympics in Beijing—we know, you're busy—rest assured that you can still attend the festivities. It's just going to cost you a couple of bucks. And you're going to have to contact a sketchy Serbian man in New Jersey named Sead Dizdarevic, who operates a company called Jet Set Travel, since he's the only person, it seems, who has bribed the hotel managers, government officials, and airport personnel in order for you to be able to land your Gulfstream, sit in a luxury box at the opening ceremonies, and then have a suite to go back to at the end of the day. Oh, and if you're wondering how much this is all going to cost, the luxury suite in the main Olympic stadium will run you about $650,000. A suite at the five-star Sofitel Wanda Beijing (pictured)? Naturally, there are no rooms officially left. But for $20,000 a night, Sead should be able to make something happen. He'll even throw in complimentary breakfast!

Beth Ostrosky Loves Howard, Endangered Animals

cityfile · 07/21/08 07:03AM

CNBC headed out to the Hamptons a couple of weeks ago to meet up with Howard Stern and soon-to-be wife Beth Ostrosky at a Hamptons magazine party celebrating—what else?—Beth Ostrosky on the cover of the mag. As the reporters from CNBC tell it, Howard and Beth are the Hamptons hot "It" couple and they've had an absolutely storybook romance (although, as you'll see, the account of their romantic first meeting leaves out the fact that Howard was very much married at the time). Now they spend time on the East End because, says Beth, her "favorite part of being in the Hamptons is the wildlife." (And by animals, she means the sort that run around on four legs, not the sort that line up outside Dune in Southampton on a Saturday night). Howard and Beth's passion for themselves—and cute animals—below.

Olivia Palermo's New Abode, New Career Goals

cityfile · 07/21/08 06:04AM

When you're a privileged young woman just starting out in life, it's only natural that you'd look to role models—established paragons of taste, if you will— for guidance in such matters as your first home. For Olivia Palermo, that role model was Mariah Carey, whose extravagant Hello Kitty strewn Tribeca spread inspired the 22-year-old socialite to move into her very own brand-new apartment on Leonard Street, she tells Page Six mag. But it wasn't easy! Olivia had to view 17 apartments before she found what she was looking for: "The first one I saw was a dark studio with a Murphy bed and I had no idea what it was. My dad thought it was a good reality check for me." Indeed! And after that life-changing glimpse at how the other half lives, there were more dramatic life lessons to come.

The Soros family has been very kind to New York State Democrats! Alex Soros, however, clearly had better things to do. [NYO]
