A Plan to Save Yankee Stadium?

cityfile · 08/25/08 10:00AM

The Olympics are officially over. So what will happen to all those fancy buildings in Beijing that were built specifically for the event? Chinese officials won't be letting them go to waste: A series of massive renovation projects are planned. The swimming venue will be transformed into a water theme park, the basketball gymnasium will morph into a shopping mall/ice skating rink, and as for the Bird's Nest stadium, which was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and took nearly 5 years to build, it will be used for soccer games and concerts and will also be turned into a hotel. Now there's an idea for the baseball fans and preservationists who have been mourning the fact that Yankee stadium is set to be demolished at the end of this season. Maybe some developer could, say, turn the stadium into the lobby of a giant Ramada? The people who want to save the stadium just need to convince a developer that out-of-towners would be happy to stay in the south Bronx.

Amy Sacco Less Prominent, Not Quite Destitute

cityfile · 08/25/08 08:06AM

Joshua David Stein brings us some breaking news in Page Six mag: Amy Sacco is no longer the queen of New York nightlife! No one goes to Bungalow 8 anymore; her restaurant, Bette, shuttered last month; and Sacco is now spending much of her time in London, where she dates a British chef and oversees a Bungalow offshoot (which, one of Stein's interviewees says, is less cool than the "club lounge at Heathrow Airport.") But it's even worse than that, according to Stein:

Putting Your Pet To Work

cityfile · 08/25/08 07:47AM

As dog professions go, it's not quite sniffing out heroin or guiding the blind, but did you know that nowadays dogs can be runway models? At Saturday's New York Pet Fashion Show at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, various breeds modeled sweaters and accessories, while their owners acted like horrible stage parents and pretended the poor little creatures enjoyed it. Martha Lives Another Day

Think there's no downside to owning beachfront real estate in East Hampton? Think again! Martha Stewart reports that her Lily Pond Lane home was seriously damaged after it "suffered a blow from a powerful bolt of lightning." Martha says the electronic driveway gate, sprinkler system, and her "rather costly stereo" all had to be repaired. But she says she has insurance, thanks goodness. We were worried for a sec! DPC Takes on the 'Real Housewives'

cityfile · 08/25/08 06:56AM

David Patrick Columbia is not much of a fan of Bravo's Real Housewives of New York, the show that will be returning for a second season in 2009 with a new cast member, Kelly Killoren Bensimon. First off, Columbia would like to make it abundantly clear that these women are not actually part of the city's society scene: "As far as the Society angle goes, these girls are not Society. An expensive apartment, a limo and a house in the Hamptons does not society make. Those accoutrement won't hurt if that's what you're looking for; but they also won't help. These girls are all spawns of the subPrime world that is now imploding around us," writes DPC on his site today. And he reserves a little extra bitchiness for LuAnn, the cast member who felt the need to mention that her husband is a count about every four minutes: "She may be sophisticated, married as long as she has been, but the patina of a European 'countess' is not there." Yes, you do sort of undermine the whole countess thing when you mention in the same sentence that you're a former "LPN," or licensed practical nurse.

US News & World Report released its annual college rankings today. No need to read; it's the usual suspects in the usual order. "The real news is price. A year at Harvard now costs $36,173 (tuition and fees), while Columbia will set you back $39,326. The cost of a college education is escalating at three to four times the inflation rate." Hillary Supporter Files Suit Against Obama

cityfile · 08/22/08 11:42AM

Philip Berg is a political activist, lawyer, and all-round nut. (He is not the same Philip Berg who founded the Kabbalah movement, incidentally, although they're as crazy as each other.) You may have heard Berg's name back in 2001 when he tried to have Supreme Court Justices O'Connor, Scalia and Thomas disbarred for their role in Bush v. Gore. Or when he sought to file murder charges against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Well, he's back: This time the diehard Hillary Clinton supporter has filed a lawsuit to declare Barack Obama a foreign-born citizen, which would mean he wouldn't be eligible to serve as president. And where does Berg's evidence come from? Wikipedia! So it must be true! The full suit below.

Linda Stein's Fifth Avenue Apartment Sold

cityfile · 08/22/08 11:24AM

The daughters of late broker-to-the-stars Linda Stein have sold her apartment at 965 Fifth Avenue. That the apartment had been the scene of Stein's brutal murder didn't exactly boost its resale value. The two-bedroom apartment, which was estimated to be worth between $2.5 and $4 million in November 2007, sold for just $1.045 million to Steven and Kathleen Carroll. [Real Deal]

"Basically, the governor is a big fan of anything that would keep Bloomberg from running against him in 2010." [Daily Politics]

Cutting Back on Wall Street

cityfile · 08/22/08 10:17AM

Dozens of perks both large and small have vanished at financial firms in recent months as the recession has deepened. Sadly, Deutsche Bank employees can no longer expect to be reimbursed for "adult entertainment." They're also barred from checking into hotels early. (Those who arrive for a morning meeting are expected to shower and shave at the airport rather than charge an extra day at the hotel.) Many junior UBS staffers are now being forced to fly coach. Goldman Sachs informed employees in London that they'd have to cut back on taxis and and meals; traders at Goldman in New York now have to buy their own beverages. (The bin of free soda and bottled water was removed.) And employees at various firms say the office temperature has gone up as firms try to keep energy costs under control.
