Citigroup Cutbacks

cityfile · 08/26/08 08:41AM

The painful cost-cutting at Citigroup continues. The company is now asking bankers and traders to refrain from making color copies and print out internal presentations on both sides of the page. Oh, and unless you're eating with a client, you can forget about expensing your lunch. The official word was sent out to Citi employees by John Havens, Citi's head of investment banking (left), two weeks ago. Thanks to Dealbook, you can gloss over the memo in its entirety after the jump.

The Media's Favorite Quote-o-Mats

cityfile · 08/26/08 07:21AM

Have you ever noticed that there are certain names in the newspaper day after day, industry "experts" whom reporters seem to constantly hit up for quotes? That journalists go back to the same well again and again is no surprise. Journalists are lazy. Why bother trying to squeeze a soundbite out of someone new when you have ten minutes to finish an article and there's already an eager pro who's given you his cell phone number and told you to call him day or night? Below, some of the most prolific quote-givers—who they are, the topics they're inevitably called to comment on, and how many times they got their "expert opinions" into newspapers for the first half of 2008.

Slumming It With Diddy

cityfile · 08/25/08 02:40PM

Think you're suffering due to out-of-control gas prices? Try feeling Diddy's pain. The hip hop mogul has been forced the suffer the indiginity of flying commercial. But he isn't taking it lying down. He's calling on all his "Saudi Arabian brothers and sisters" to please send him some oil so he can fuel up his private jet. Until that happens, you can expect to find him boozed up at airport check-ins and lounges, making more videos like the one above.

Isabella and Elettra Saving the World

cityfile · 08/25/08 01:20PM

Elettra Weidemann says her charity JustOneFrickinDay.com, which funds development projects in Africa, was inspired by the weekends she spent as a child at a conservation center in Florida with her mother Isabella Rossellini—who, Elettra reveals, does "green pornos" for the Sundance Channel where she "dresses up as a bug, fly, spider, grasshopper...praying mantis, and explains how bugs have sex." Sounds much more fun than modeling for Lancome! (But not dissimilar from acting for David Lynch.) [NYO]

Paul Auster Hates the Web

cityfile · 08/25/08 12:46PM

Brooklyn literati kingpin Paul Auster does not care for computers. "I just don't trust the internet. Most of what's on it is false." And how did he come to this startling conclusion? "I'll give readings where the person introducing me will provide information that is simply wrong. I'll ask them where they got it, and invariably they’ll say the internet.'" [Times UK]

According to Davis: "Caviar is the new cocaine... it's decadent and totally rehab-free!" Just think how disappointed his dealer's going to be when he catches wind of this. [Paper]

The Lawyer Restaurant Owners Love to Hate

cityfile · 08/25/08 11:41AM

Meet Daniel "Maimon" Kirschenbaum, Esq. He's only 29—he graduated law school in 2005—but it's safe to say that if the James Beard Foundation gave out an award to the biggest thorn in the side of New York-area restaurateurs, he'd rank up there with inspectors from the Department of Health and ungenerous restaurant critics. Kirschenbaum is a partner at a firm called Joseph & Herzfeld and the go-to man for servers and other restaurant employees when they take on their bosses for skimming tips or firing them without cause. Thanks to word of mouth (and well-placed ads on certain websites), Kirshenbaum has been obscenely prolific in the past couple of years. Just a few of his targets: Heartland Brewery, Nobu, Jean Georges, B.B. King, Bouley, BondSt, Balthazar, One Little W 12, Abigail Kirsch, BLT Steak, BLT Prime, BLT Fish, and 40/40.

Rockefeller2

"Are you sure he's not a Rockefeller? The New York Times seemed to raise that question yesterday when it published a photo of impostor Clark Rockefeller on the front page of its Style section—and 14 pages later, a wedding announcement for actual family heir Clayton Rockefeller, who, in the accompanying photo, looks shockingly like the phony."
