It's Never Too Soon to Start Your Jacko-Related PR Campaign

cityfile · 06/25/09 03:53PM

Over the coming days, lots of companies will look to cash in on the death of Michael Jackson. Legacy.com, the "undisputed leader in Web-based memorialization" and the website "where life stories live on," may just go down as the first. It's already set up a guest book where people can "share their thoughts and express their condolences." And it's already sent out a press release pointing out that printed versions of these "guest books" can be ordered as "commemorative keepsakes." The press release is below.

New York's Angriest State Senator

cityfile · 06/25/09 03:26PM

Has the stalemate in Albany been boring you to tears? Allow Kevin Parker to liven things up. The Democratic state senator called Gov. David Paterson a "coke-snorting, staff-banging governor" today after Paterson ordered the Senate to continue working out their differences, rather than go home for the weekend. Parker has had his anger management issues in the past: He's the same guy who attacked a Post photographer outside his home in Brooklyn back in May. But you won't find much of Parker's bitterness on his website. The most recent story? "Senator Parker Donates Prom Dresses To High School Teens At Annual Prom Dress Giveaway." [NYDN]

The Dream Fades For Vikram Chatwal

cityfile · 06/25/09 02:20PM

Playboy hotelier Vikram Chatwal is the owner of several properties around town, including Midtown's Stay and Dream hotels. He says another property will be added to his portfolio in September when The Chatwal opens its doors on East 44th Street, which is also supposed to house the Lamb's Club, a restaurant by chef Geoffrey Zakarian with a bar by nightlife impresarios David Rabin and Will Regen. Whether Chatwal's plans stand any chance of panning out, though, is anyone's guess.

The Next Chapter in Bernie Madoff's Life

cityfile · 06/25/09 11:11AM

Bernie Madoff will be sentenced for his crimes on Monday and he faces a maximum of 150 years in prison. (His lawyer's request of 12 years? Highly unlikely.) What will Bernie need to know when he gets sent off to a federal correctional facility, especially since other inmates may blame him for the economic meltdown as a whole? He'll need to "maintain high visibility," says Larry Levine, an ex-con and consultant to white-collar criminals, who recommends Madoff stay in areas where lots of other people gather. "Do not become confrontational with anybody. Respect people; be polite. Don't borrow anything from anyone. Don't become beholden to anyone," he adds. We'll add one more tip: Buy tons of stuff from the commissary and hand it out to your new friends. It's a proven strategy. That's what Jeffrey Epstein did and he got through his bit just fine. The September Issue Trailer Hits the Web

cityfile · 06/25/09 10:32AM

The trailer for The September Issue, the forthcoming documentary about Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, is now online. From the two-minute clip, there's plenty in the movie for Anna to like. (She's described as "the single most important figure in the $350 billion global fashion industry.") But there are clearly bits that may come back to haunt her. (A crack about blind people may not go over well.) The movie doesn't come out until September (naturally), although bootlegged copies are making the rounds. Think twice, though, if you plan to weigh in on Facebook. Anna is monitoring your every word. [YouTube, Page Six]

Rudy Giuliani Feels Mark Sanford's Pain

cityfile · 06/25/09 10:10AM

Rudy Giuliani has been trying to worm his way back into the public conversation the past few days. He penned an op-ed for the Times yesterday, jumping into the political mess in Albany by proposing, among other things, a constitutional convention to institute term limits on lawmakers and stricter campaign finance laws. But he didn't speak out because he's considering a run for governor in 2010. Don't be silly. It's because he cares about New York and fixing the political gridlock in Albany. ("This is done really out of frustration as a New Yorker," he explained.)

Subway Line Winners and Losers

cityfile · 06/25/09 08:47AM

The cleanest subway line in NYC, per the annual survey by the Straphangers Campaign? That would be the No. 7 train, which came in first place and was tidy 84 percent of the time. The worst: The R, with just 25 percent of cars considered clean. Enjoy your commute. [NYT/City Room]

Asness Sells, More Cuts at Chupi

cityfile · 06/25/09 07:54AM

• Hedge fund manager Cliff Asness won't have an apartment to stay in when he makes occasional trips to Manhattan from his home in Greenwich. Or at least he won't have the apartment at The Oxford on East 72nd Street that he bought back in 2002 and has owned till now. Asness has sold the 35th floor apartment for $1.55 million. [Cityfile]

• A new month is approaching, so it's time for Russell Simmons to drop the twentysomething model he's been dating and move on to a new twentysomething model. But there are signs the 51-year-old is maturing: Julie Henderson, age 23, has been replaced by French model Noemie Lenoir (right), who is a positively aged 29. [P6]

Spotted

cityfile · 06/25/09 05:55AM

Look who was spotted riding the subway! It's Ruth Madoff, who the Post trailed through Rockefeller Plaza before snapping a pic of her aboard the F train. Clearly it wasn't the wisest move on Ruthie's part to seat herself under a 99-cent cell phone ad. But she's got other problems: "The once-stylish Ruth sported the oversized jacket and unfashionable flats she's been wearing in public since news of the financial fraud broke. She was also having another bad-hair day. Since her upscale hairstylist, Pierre Michel, banned her from his salon, it's been streaked with gray instead of highlights." Maybe that's why she was a little less than friendly with the photographer? "Are you having fun embarrassing me—and ruining my life?" [NYP]

J.Lo's Defeat, Bar's New Gig

cityfile · 06/24/09 07:29PM

• Another celebrity clothing line bites the dust: Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface is going on "hiatus" after this season. It's the third Lopez label to disappear in recent years, although in the case of Sweetface, there's always a chance it could return, so at least J.Lo has a glimmer of hope to hold on to. [WWD, Cut]
