The Recession Bypasses Sardinia

cityfile · 06/29/09 11:24AM

A "luxury fair" designed to appeal to the world's richest people took place in Sardinia this past weekend. But if you were thinking the economic downturn would have put a damper on things, well, think again. Thirty bottles of "Exousia Gold Luxury Water," which is describede as a "gold petal designer label mineral water" and costs $2,800 a pop, were sold over the course of two evenings. And the water still isn't good enough to drink as is, apparently. "A spokeswoman for Exousia said sales were mainly to Russians, who 'like to use it to make tea.'" [DJ/Wealth Bulletin]

Madoff: The Scene Outside

cityfile · 06/29/09 10:54AM

The victims of Bernie Madoff reacted in different ways to the news he'd been sentenced to 150 years in prison. Burt Ross, the former mayor of Ft. Lee, New Jersey who lost $5 million to the Ponzi scheme (and who covered today's sentencing for The Daily Beast), celebrated by planting a kiss on his wife in front of the hundreds of reporters gathered. Other people assembled outside the courthouse with giant placards or strange looking figurines. A few photos of the zany scene outside the courthouse after the jump.

Mike Bloomberg, Stalking Proponent

cityfile · 06/29/09 10:14AM

Mayor Bloomberg has come up with a great way to break the stalemate in Albany. He (jokingly?) suggested this morning that senators' personal phone numbers and addresses be made public so residents of New York can call them up three o'clock in the morning and give them a piece of their minds. Cute, but just wait until someone actually takes Bloomberg's advice to heart and wakes up Sen. Kevin Parker in the middle of the night. This could really get ugly. [NYDN]

Ruth Madoff Speaks Out

cityfile · 06/29/09 09:12AM

For the first time since her husband was arrested in December, Ruth Madoff is speaking out. (Bernie, as you've undoubtedly heard, was sentenced to 150 years in prison earlier today; Ruth, for her part, entered into an agreement with the U.S. attorney's office on Friday evening that forces her to give up claim to $80 million in assets, but will allow her to keep $2.5 million in cash.) Naturally, Ruth portrays herself as just another victim of Bernie in today's prepared statement and says there were two Bernies: the one she was married to and the other Bernie who responsible for "this horrible fraud." Does her line about life with Bernie being "over" indicate that she now plans to divorce him and/or not bring him care packages in prison? Hard to say, but you can read her full remarks below.

Madonna Gets a Discount

cityfile · 06/29/09 07:50AM

• It turns out Madonna scored a rather sweet deal on the East 81st Street townhouse she went into contract to purchase in April. The Material Girl paid $32.5 million for the 13-bedroom manse, which is about 28 percent less than the $45 million asking price that the house was listed for back in October. [NYT, previously]
• After nearly a year on the market—and three price cuts—writer/director John Ridley has finally found a buyer for his condo at 15 Central Park West. The 2,237-square-foot apartment had been listed most recently for $8.5 million. [Cityfile, Corcoran]

Madoff Gets 150 Years

cityfile · 06/29/09 07:42AM

Bernie Madoff appeared in a federal courtroom this morning to find out his fate for carrying out the biggest fraud in financial history. Judge Denny Chin sentenced Madoff to the maximum—150 years behind bars—telling the courtroom that he didn't believe Madoff's claim that he had cooperated with prosecutors, or that he had divulged all he knew about the scheme. Madoff's victims erupted in cheers after the sentence was handed down, Bernie barely reacted to the news, and now Madoff is off to change out of the "immaculate" suit he wore to court today and put on the prison jumpsuit he'll be wearing for the rest of his life. The Jackson Saga Rolls On

cityfile · 06/29/09 05:55AM

• A second autopsy was performed on Michael Jackson over the weekend just as details from the first were revealed: Jackson was just 112 pounds when he died and his "emaciated body was riddled with needle marks and scars, and his head was virtually bald." In the meantime, his doctor, Conrad Murray, has denied giving Jackson any drugs right before his death and says he found a faint pulse when he first discovered him. Jackson's parents say they plan to fight for custody of Jackson's kids and for control of his estate. And plenty of people came out to celebrate Jackson's life at a couple of BET parties this weekend. And now you're all caught up. [NYP, LAT, WP, NYDN]

It's Good to Be 28

cityfile · 06/26/09 02:53PM

Are you a 28-year-old woman? Enjoy it. You're the happiest you're ever going to be, according to a survey of 4,000 women. "The age of 28 has been pinpointed as the time in a woman's life their hair looks the best, body shape is at its peak and confidence is at an all-time high. The security of your job, having a steady income, being in a relationship and having strong friendships all help create the perfect point in our lives when everything comes together." Then it all goes downhill, naturally. "By the time they have turned 30 they start worrying about growing old and developing grey hair and wrinkles." That line about grey hair? It probably isn't accidental. The study was commissioned by Clairol. [Telegraph]

Ruth Takes a Pass

cityfile · 06/26/09 02:36PM

Subway-riding Ruth Madoff will not be attending her husband's sentencing on Monday, reports ABC News. (Nor will his two sons be there, although that was to be expected given they maintain they haven't had any contact with him since his arrest.) Whether Bernie himself will express remorse is anyone's guess, although the cop who was assigned to guard him during his arrest—and who appears on 20/20 tonight—isn't expecting him a stream of tears and apologies. "He did not seem like the most contrite person I've ever met." [ABC News]

The Forecast From Vanity Fair

cityfile · 06/26/09 11:58AM

So it's rather warm outside today. But it's also been a very rainy month: It rained 15 out of the first 20 days of June, in fact. What gives? Instead of taking the easy path and checking in with, say, weatherman Sam Champion on Twitter, Vanity Fair did one better and called up a MIT-trained physicist who analyzed climate change patterns for the Clinton administration. Impressive! We can't say we understood his explanation for why it's been the way it's been. But this we did understand one thing he said quite clearly: "It's going to get a lot worse." So, yes, you'll be carrying suntan lotion and earmuffs with you pretty soon. [VF]

Michael Loves Michael

cityfile · 06/26/09 11:14AM

Did you picture Mayor Bloomberg as a Michael Jackson fan? It turns out he is. "I will always be listening to his music," he said before taking a dip in a public pool, which he does every year to kick off the Parks Department's swim season. "In the car on the way uptown I was listening to the music of Michael Jackson," he said. He didn't list off his favorite songs, alas. But we sure would love to see a reporter summon up the nerve to test him out at an upcoming press conference. The ball is in Azi Paybarah's court. [NYP]

The Michael Jackson Saga: The Winners & Losers

cityfile · 06/26/09 09:48AM

Michael Jackson's death sent shockwaves across the globe yesterday. And as you've undoubtedly realized by now, the story will dominate news coverage for a long time to come. (The good news: At least no one is talking about Jon & Kate.) So who will ultimately benefit from Jackson's death and the ensuing media circus? Who won't? A very lengthy roundup of some of the winners (his record label, cable news channels) and losers (Jackson's plastic surgeon, his "personal physicians") after the jump.

The Death of Michael Jackson: The Day After

cityfile · 06/26/09 05:14AM

• An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Michael Jackson this morning; just when the results will be back isn't clear. Meanwhile, attention is being focused on the drugs Jackson may have been taking just before he went into cardiac arrest yesterday, a "cocktail" that may have included the powerful narcotic Demerol. [AP, NYP, Sun, TMZ]
• Naturally, Jackson's death has led just about every living celebrity to issue a statement, extend condolences, and/or use otherwise clog up Twitter with some sort of thought on Jackson's passing. [People, Mirror, NYP]
• Jackson was reportedly $500 million in debt when he died. [NYP]
• As for how Jackson's kids are coping with the news, they're supposedly "very upset" but "fine," whatever that means. But no one knows who will take custody of them or if Jackson left behind and instructions. [Sun]
• In the meantime, Jackson's fans have been holding vigils outside the hospital where his body is located, outside the Neverland Ranch, and in front of his childhood home in Gary, Indiana, among other places. [TMZ, TMZ]
