Lydia Hearst Can't Help Herself

cityfile · 07/21/09 12:37PM

In The Last International Playboy, an indie film that came out last month, Lydia Hearst can be seen in getting it on with a guy and a girl in the opening scene. But because that was last month and this is this month, she's back with new footage of her engaging in a threesome. This time it's an American Psycho-inspired music video for Miles Fisher's cover of the Talking Heads song, "This Must Be The Place." (Huh?) But we can't help but be a little disappointed. After all, we were just beginning to take her seriously. [YouTube via Gawker]

Fran Lebowitz Will Not Be Tweeting Today

cityfile · 07/21/09 10:30AM

It's a good thing that author Fran Lebowitz is so tight with editor/restaurateur Graydon Carter that she can walk into Monkey Bar (or the Waverly Inn) without a reservation and get a table a moment's notice. If she had to use the phone—or Monkey Bar's email reservations system—she'd be in serious trouble. WWD asked her if Lebowitz if she spent any time using Twitter or Facebook and this is what she had to say:

Goldman Isn't the Only Firm Thriving

cityfile · 07/21/09 10:03AM

As the public focuses on the lucky bankers at Goldman Sachs who are on track to make more money than ever this year, let's not forget about hedge fund managers. They're doing pretty well, too, you know! According to a new report by Hedge Fund Research, the average fund was up more than nine percent during the quarter, the best quarterly return since the fourth quarter of 1999. So if you see a cocky finance type out and about and he's buying bottles of champagne like the last year never happened—or waving a wad of cash—he could work at Goldman. But he could just as well be employed by a hedge fund. It still remains highly unlikely, however, that he works at Citigroup. [Dealbook]

Making Crime Pay

cityfile · 07/21/09 08:33AM

New York State Assemblyman Jim Tedisco introduced a "Madoff" bill on Monday, which would require rich New Yorkers convicted of crimes to pay state and federal governments for the estimated $80-$90 it costs to keep them behind bars. Despite the name, Tedisco's proposed law wouldn't have even applied to Madoff, since the government stripped him of his assets. But had it been on the books a few years ago? The most humiliating period in Martha Stewart's life would have come with a $13,500 bill, too. [Reuters]

Up For Auction: Dreier's Apartment, Shoe Collection

cityfile · 07/21/09 08:04AM

The apartment that belonged to disgraced lawyer Marc Dreier goes up for auction at 1pm today. And the winning bidder won't just walk away with a 3,000-square-foot pad and 738-square-foot terrace on the 34th floor of One Beacon Court. All the items that Dreier left behind are part of the package as well. In addition to nine pints of Haagen Dazs ice cream in the freezer, the lucky bidder will also walk away with "a half-eaten raspberry peach pie, a collection of Christian Liaigre furnishings and seven pairs of black Ermenegildo Zegna shoes, mostly size eight." Naturally, there's a catch, a little detail that goes unmentioned by the firm handling the auction this afternoon. Since Dreier was under house arrest for several months and wasn't even permitted to leave his apartment to walk the dog, the jailed lawyer is also reportedly leaving behind a terrace that's covered with dog doo. Bring a spoon (for the ice cream) and a bucket full of cleaning supplies (for the doo), and you'll be fully prepared. [Bloomberg]

But now Lehman is taking it one step further: It plans to open a retail store next week at its 1271 Sixth Avenue office.
