Stop Calling Black Singers 'Rappers' Already

Rich Juzwiak · 11/29/12 12:10PM

The New York Times really wants you to know that Chris Brown is a rapper. In fewer than 100 words of the original copy of John Ortved's tweet roundup "Chris Brown Signs Off," including the headline and picture caption, Brown is referred to as a "rapper" three times. Wrong. Chris Brown is not a rapper. Yes, he raps on occasion. Sometimes, he is specifically commissioned to do so. But he is also a dancer. And an actor. And, oh yeah, that thing on which he based his career in the first place: a singer.

Hating Chris Brown Isn't Racist Until You Make It Racist

Cord Jefferson · 11/26/12 06:31PM

Last night, pop singer Chris Brown, who infamously and brutally beat up Rihanna in 2009, launched a verbal, scatological attack on comedy writer Jenny Johnson. Johnson has made it a bit of a hobby to antagonize the 23-year-old Brown, and last night, after she called Brown a "worthless piece of shit" on Twitter, Brown unleashed a barrage of tweets at Johnson to tell her he was going to fart on her and defecate into her eye. As the internet gathered around yet another Chris Brown temper tantrum, Brown, who has hastily deleted offensive tweets in the past, went further than usual, deleting his entire Twitter account and disappointing his legion of fans, Team Breezy.

Chris Brown Reminds Everyone He's Chris Brown, Tells Comedian He's Going to Shit On Her Eye (UPDATE)

Taylor Berman · 11/25/12 07:58PM

Chris Brown makes it hard to forget about his past, doesn't he? Earlier today, the petulant and abusive R&B singer engaged in a Twitter battle with comedy writer Jenny Johnson. As you might expect, Brown was nothing but respectful, offering, among other things, to let Johnson suck his dick and to shit on her eye (at his mother's request, no less). Brown quickly deleted the tweets but not before Johnson retweeted them.

The New Rihanna/Chris Brown Duet Is Great, Unfortunately

Rich Juzwiak · 11/15/12 04:05PM

"Ain't Nobody's Business," Rihanna's duet with her abuser Chris Brown from her upcoming Unapologetic album, has leaked. It is an excellent pop song: sublime, clear, catchy. For its chorus, it interpolates (and slightly alters) an adlb from Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" for its chorus ("Ain't nobody's business but mine and my baby's"), but it's produced more in the style of Steve "Silk" Hurley's remix of Jackson's "Remember the Time." Produced by The-Dream and Los da Mystro, "Business" is a piano house number with a relaxed tempo and string shrieks, it manages to avoid EDM trappings (no drop anywhere to be found!), sounding classic and lovely. This will probably be massively popular, and impossible to ignore very, very soon. Rihanna and Chris Brown are reunited and it feels so cognitively dissonant.

Rihanna and Chris Brown are collaborating on a song called "Nobodies Business." It's about a start-up owned by nobodies.

Chris Brown and Rihanna Are Definitely Probably Back Together According to This Blurry Photo of the Back of Their Heads [UPDATE]

Neetzan Zimmerman · 10/04/12 09:45AM

Just two nights after they were allegedly spotted allegedly making out at a New York nightclub, and then definitely spotted definitely leaving the same New York hotel, Rihanna and Chris Brown were once again allegedly spotted allegedly hanging out together with Beyoncé, Rita Ora, and Santigold in the VIP section of a Jay-Z concert in Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

Dr. Drew Doesn't "Fault" Chris Brown for Beating Rihanna

Rich Juzwiak · 09/18/12 05:16PM

Dr. Drew appeared on the Sirius show Dirty Pop with Lance Bass and was asked about his opinion on Chris Brown and Rihanna. His physical abuse of her in 2009 is as evergreen a pop-culture topic as you could find in the past 10 years. "Beating a dead horse" would be a good way to describe it were it not regarding the beating of an actual human being.

Chris Brown's New Tattoo: Definitely Ugly, Possibly of a Battered Woman (UPDATE)

Emma Carmichael · 09/11/12 11:35AM

Cute new tat, Breezy! Except that from far away, it looks a little bit like a smudge. And when you get closer, the smudge starts to look like a skeleton from Día de los Muertos. And then, when you get even closer, it really comes into focus: This appears to be a tattoo of a battered woman, one that might very well resemble the infamous, horrible photo taken of Rihanna's face soon after then-boyfriend Chris Brown beat her in a car.

People Won't Stop Suing Chris Brown and Drake

Taylor Berman · 08/20/12 06:45PM

The love of Rihanna's life, Chris Brown, and his sensitive, sweater-draped nemesis Drake can't stop getting sued by people over their bottle fight two months ago. Last week, the feuding Rihanna lovers were sued by company called Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., which is somehow connected to WiP, the club where the bottle throwing melee took place. The complaint seeks $16 million in damages, claiming that, and this is actually in the legal papers, the two "shared a grudge against the other arising out of their romantic relationships with the same woman." According to the lawsuit, this led to bottle throwing and fighting between the two crews, which are described in the suit thusly:

Rihanna Doesn't Know Who She Is, But She Does Know That She Still Loves Chris Brown

Rich Juzwiak · 08/20/12 10:00AM

Oprah sat down with Rihanna in the pop star's homeland of Barbados on last night's episode of Oprah's Next Chapter. In the clip above, Oprah asks RiRi who she is and the pop star, whose fame that dates back to her mid-teens has presumably arrested her development, gives non-answers that would sound lightweight on a dating site (she loves to have fun, she's intrigued by things that are a little adventurous, she wants people to feel good, "whatever that means"). You're shocked that she didn't mention her art once in her self-summary, right?
