Lovebird visitors to the Pont des Arts, a footbridge in Paris, typically mark the occasion by fixing a padlock to its handrail and tossing the key into the Seine to symbolize their eternal devotion. Yesterday evening, police evacuated the bridge after a 2.4-meter section of railing collapsed under the weight of their adoration.

According to an Associated Press report, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has said that he was tortured, beaten, and kept in a cage by Taliban forces while held captive in Afghanistan. Bergdahl spoke of the torture — which allegedly came after he attempted to escape — to people treating him at a U.S. military medical center in Germany.

Taliban Claims Responsibility for Deadly Pakistan Airport Attack

The Pakistani Taliban took credit on Monday for an attack on Pakistan's busiest airport, according to The New York Times. On Sunday night, 10 gunmen — some of them dressed as police — entered the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan and led a five-hour assault in the VIP terminal, killing 19 people. The Taliban in part blames the U.S. for the attack, claiming it was revenge for last November's drone strike that killed Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

An Australian man with an apparent death wish antagonized a stingray at the beach in Gold Coast. The stingray returned the favor by charging at the man, stopping short of stinging him. Lucky for the man, the person filming was able to warn him so that he could get away. While the chances of dying from a stingray sting are rare, you'll remember that Steve Irwin died in 2006 after a stingray's tail spine pierced his heart.

Sixty years to the day of his death, a computer at the University of Reading passed Alan Turing's test Saturday, successfully convincing judges that they were communicating with a human. UPDATE 6/10: As io9 and others have pointed out, it was not a computer (or a supercomputer) but a chat bot — a program designed to mimic human conversation—that "passed" the Turing Test.

A Man Tried To Break Into Sandra Bullock's House While She Was Home

Five People Dead in Las Vegas Shooting Spree

Gunmen reportedly shot and killed two police officers and a third person before taking their own lives inside a Las Vegas Walmart store Sunday morning. According to witnesses, the two shooters had apparently made a suicide pact and before killing the police officers, said the shootings were "the start of the revolution."
