New York Daily News Tweets Featuring Shaun King's Head, Ranked

Kevin Draper and Patrick Redford · 08/12/16 12:25PM

Activist-turned-New York Daily News senior justice writer Shaun King writes on very serious topics like the justice system, police brutality, and Black Lives Matter. Which is why it is so baffling that the Daily News frequently promotes his stories on Twitter by inserting King’s visage into the story art, often to hilarious effect.

Peggy Noonan on Germany’s decision to admit 800,000 refugees from Muslim countries: “It’s one thing to be overwhelmed by an unexpected force, quite another to invite your invaders in!”

Vote for One of These Underdog Candidates This Election Day

Eve Peyser · 08/12/16 11:05AM

I am so done with this election and its scandals. Between Benghazi and kicking a baby out of a rally, I can’t vote for either of the two major candidates in good conscience. So what do I do come November 1st? I’m a patriot, and thus it is my duty to exercise my fundamental right as an American citizen and vote. Plus I heard if you don’t vote, you die.

On Thursday, the New York Times and USA Today parent company Gannett requested that the New York State Supreme Court unseal records from Donald Trump’s contentious 1990 divorce with Ivana Trump. During one deposition, Ivana reportedly accused Trump of sexual assault. The divorce ended in a settlement agreement, and Ivana has endorsed Donald’s candidacy, denying that he ever assaulted her.

What Does Donald Trump Feel When He Laughs

Brendan O'Connor · 08/12/16 09:00AM

Donald Trump has had quite a week, making jokes about Hillary Clinton’s potential murder before declaring that she and Barack Obama are the co-founders of the Islamic State. He said it, and then he said it again the next morning, and now he says it was sarcasm. “Ratings challenged @CNN reports so seriously that I call President Obama (and Clinton) ‘the founder’ of ISIS, & MVP,” he tweeted this morning. “THEY DON’T GET SARCASM?”

The Daily Beast Removes Article About Olympic Athletes Using Grindr

J.K. Trotter · 08/12/16 07:00AM

On Wednesday, The Daily Beast published an article describing a reporter’s attempts to use several dating apps, such as Tinder and Grindr, near the Olympic Village in the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Barra da Tijuca. The piece, which was written by London correspondent Nico Hines, was widely condemned after readers realized that it was possible to identify a number of closeted gay Olympic athletes with whom Hines, who is straight, had communicated. After substantially editing the text, and appending an apologetic editors’ note, the site completely removed it on Thursday night:

Donald Trump Finally Tells a Lie Worth Believing

Speaking at a rally in Florida Thursday night, Donald Trump repeatedly said it was Friday. As both the attendant crowd and multiple reporters at the scene noted, it was not.

Hillary, Let Us Write Your Tweets

Ashley Feinberg and Hudson Hongo · 08/11/16 03:15PM

Earlier today, Hillary Clinton tweeted to her over eight million followers that Barack Obama is not, in fact, the founder of ISIS. At the time of publication, that tweet has been retweeted roughly 6,000 times and “faved” 10,000 times, which is fine. It’s a fine tweet. But Hillary—we can do better. Let us do better.

In the composing window of Gawker Media’s publishing platform, there is a toolbar. At one end of the toolbar is a little icon of a gear. If you click that gear, it brings out a secondary toolbar offering the platform’s less frequently used features. Second from the right is a little blue virtual switch labeled “Allow Replies,” which is on by default. If you click it, it turns gray, and when the post is published, readers are unable to put comments on it.

Here, at Last, Is the Rob Ford Crack Video

Tom Scocca · 08/11/16 11:10AM

In May 2013, Gawker editor John Cook received a tip that the mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, had a habit of smoking crack cocaine, that a video existed showing the mayor smoking crack, and that the video could be available to a media outlet under the right terms. Cook traveled to Toronto, met with the sources under sketchy conditions (and, it would later emerge, under police surveillance), and watched the video. The terms were that the video could be had for $200,000.
