Delta Forces Customers to Agree to Shitty Service Before Purchasing Ticket

Jay Hathaway · 08/18/15 10:35AM

Air travel is the fucking worst, everyone agrees, but it is sometimes a necessity. And, when it is, most people just book the cheapest economy flight available to them, regardless of airline, and suck up the indignity of layovers, limited legroom, and cramped baggage space. Now, Delta has introduced an additional indignity to which you must agree before taking your place behind some seat-reclining asshole.

Whose Side Are the Oath Keepers in Ferguson On?

Andy Cush · 08/18/15 09:00AM

Sam Andrews received three phone calls during an hour-long lunch at a Pizza Hut in St. Louis County, Missouri, last week. Andrews is a member of the group called the Oath Keepers, and the callers were fellow Oath Keepers, congratulating and questioning him about his latest “operation”: Over the previous two nights, in nearby Ferguson, he’d led a group of five white men with assault rifles and body armor to the scene of the protests marking the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. It had been a grabby image for the media convened there, and he relished the attention.

Christian Vlogger Couple Admits Pregnancy Was "Staged"...By God Himself

Allie Jones · 08/17/15 04:05PM

The popular Christian vlogger couple Sam and Nia Rader have had a real whirlwind of a week. First, Sam posted a video in which he “surprised” Nia with her own positive pregnancy test by stealing some of her urine from the toilet; that video went viral, and then three days later, the couple posted a video announcing that Nia miscarried. The Raders now say that after sharing this unbelievable story with the world, they have been getting some “hate comments” from “haters” sipping that “Haterade.”

Study: Hedge Funds Don't Do Shit, Suck

Hamilton Nolan · 08/17/15 03:08PM

Hedge funds—which, as an asset class, are a scam—charge exorbitant fees in exchange for the sort of top-tier investment skill you supposedly can’t get with a dirt cheap index fund. A new study says that is bullshit.

I’m Tired of the Black Woman Problem: An Interview With Tamara Winfrey Harris

Jason Parham · 08/17/15 02:43PM

Black women are in trouble. Or at least, that’s the narrative. Headlines warn that they’re less likely to attain a college degree than their peers; that they pose a higher risk to various health afflictions like cervical cancer and hypertension; that they “experience unintended pregnancies” at three times the rate of white women. Black women are also said to make less money than men in the same profession and will most likely never wed. Largely absent, however, are the counter-narratives: truths that grant ownership to the lives and futures of black women. A statistic rarely repeated is that black women comprise “42 percent of businesses owned by women of color” (the fastest growing segment in the women-owned business market), or that they are the most “reliable progressive voting block,” or that, in the last 60 years, high school graduation rates among black girls have increased 63 percent.

State Department Finds Thousands of Philippe Reines Emails It Claimed Did Not Exist

J.K. Trotter · 08/17/15 11:30AM

Earlier this year, Gawker Media sued the State Department over its response to a Freedom of Information Act request we filed in 2013, in which we sought emails exchanged between reporters at 33 news outlets and Philippe Reines, the former deputy assistant secretary of state and aggressive defender of Hillary Clinton. Over two years ago, the department claimed that “no records responsive to your request were located”—a baffling assertion, given Reines’ well-documented correspondence with journalists. Late last week, however, the State Department came up with a very different answer: It had located an estimated 17,000 emails responsive to Gawker’s request.
