Madonna Embarrassing Herself Far in Advance of Big Super Bowl Halftime Show

Emma Carmichael · 02/02/12 05:55PM

The Super Bowl is a mere three days away, which brings us to that painful part of the promotion week where every single person who has even a remote involvement in The Big Game is granted a formulaic press conference. (Sample questions: "Excited about The Big Game?" "Who are you rooting for in The Big Game?" "Is this Big Game bigger than last year's Big Game?")

What's the Most Annoying Possible Euphemism for 'Media Person?'

Hamilton Nolan · 02/02/12 05:19PM

Man, I remember when "Interactive Guru" seemed like the absolute most annoying possible euphemism for someone with a job vaguely related to the media. Seems like a long time ago. Then, of course, we got "Social Media Ninja" and "Knowledge Curator" and the whole thing just turned into an exasperating arms race of bullshit.

I Can't Stop Looking At This Weird Scottish Internet Nightmare Video

Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 05:07PM

Scottish post-electo crew Errors threw together this very normal and comforting video about, like, how we're all being subsumed into a hypermedia e-dystopia that is once absurd and soul crushing, or something. It's weird that I'm not "getting" the subtext because this is such a straightforward and obvious-feeling video. As Creators Projects writes, this is "a parallel universe that seems to resemble Giorgio de Chirico paintings... [with] a bit of the Pet Shop Boys about it, a pixel or two of Net Art and a WTF aesthetic that will have a Marmite effect on you." Um, exactly? Also, it feels like something I should have downloaded at 9600 baud.

Did Cocktail Snobs Help Destroy an Antarctic Glacier?

Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 04:43PM

The Antarctic region is losing its glaciers to global warming, but now comes evidence humans are helping erode the ice masses in a more direct way: Chilean authorities arrested an entrepreneur for making off with five and a half tons of the Jorge Montt glacier in Patagonia.

A hearty official Gawker congratulations to David James Glendon, Irish actor and winner of the first annual George Clooney lookalike contest, held at Dylan's Whiskey Bar in Kilkenny last week. (David's the one in the photo who looks like George Clooney.)

Steve Jobs Playwright Lacerates Stephen Fry Over Brutal Apple Factories

Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 01:51PM

Stephen Fry, the British actor and vocal Apple admirer, defended the company on Twitter against accounts of brutal working conditions in its contract factories. This did not sit well, at all, with Mike Daisey, creator of a critically-acclaimed one-man show about those very factories, and, now, of a blog post in which he says Fry "is being a total idiot" and calls him a "fanboy," "apologist" and "pathetic."
