Bush’s father Prescott Bush, and Tucker Carlson is now embroiled in a sex abuse scandal that has been covered up, victims say, since the 1970s. At least 40 former students of St. George’s School in Rhode Island have come forward to say they were abused at the school. The latest known case of abuse allegedly occurred in 2004.

Two Years Before Litvinenko's Murder, Another Kremlin Enemy Was Mysteriously Poisoned

Andy Cush · 01/21/16 12:10PM

In 2004, Viktor Yuschenko was Ukraine’s most promising candidate to oust Leonid Kuchma, an unpopular president who served for a decade and enjoyed close ties with Russia. Yuschenko won the election later that year, but at a steep cost: he’d been poisoned with a near-fatal amount of dioxin, which left him disfigured and seriously ill. In the aftermath, Ukraine’s highest prosecutor investigated whether the apparent attempt on Yuschenko’s life was the work of the Kremlin, but in the decade since, the poisoning has never been solved.

Don't Just Boycott the Oscars, Destroy Them

Rich Juzwiak · 01/21/16 11:09AM

It’s heartening that Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith, and, as of this morning, her husband Will Smith have publicly denounced the Academy Awards, declaring that they will not be attending this year’s ceremony. The Oscars, though seen as a pinnacle of artistic achievement, really amount to cherries on top of a bowl of them. They represent more success to those who have already had so much of it—success in getting a movie made, and then success in getting it sufficient attention to yield Oscars, either by selling a lot of tickets or wooing critics, or, most frequently, some mixture of the two. It’s high time we reevaluate how much we invest in their importance.

Supreme Court Rules Against "Wichita Massacre" Brothers in Death Penalty Case

Brendan O'Connor · 01/20/16 08:44PM

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 against three convicted murderers, including two brothers, whose death sentences had been vacated by the Kansas Supreme Court. The decision—which ultimately revolved around sentencing procedures, the New York Times reports, and will likely not have very much impact on the court’s death penalty jurisprudence—returned the case to the state Supreme Court. The sentences may be vacated again.
