How Sincere Is the Koch Brothers’ Commitment to Criminal Justice Reform?

Andy Cush · 01/20/16 03:55PM

Among the causes to which billionaire and conservative puppetmaster Charles Koch donates his vast wealth, his long support of criminal justice reform sticks out. While many of Koch’s pet issues cater strictly to the interests of his own moneyed class, the idea of curtailing the power of police and criminal courts is a palatable one—even appealing—to the sorts of people his cash-fueled political machine might otherwise have a hard time reaching: liberals, people of color, the poor.

Allie Jones · 01/20/16 01:55PM

Earlier today, official Trump supporter Sarah Palin reportedly did not show up to a Trump rally in Iowa as planned. She seemed to deny that anything is amiss, however, in a Facebook post this afternoon. “Trading in the beautiful snow of Iowa for the red dirt of Oklahoma as planned, despite what the media is try’s no to spin up!” she wrote, in near-English. “Thank you Iowa - get out and caucus on February 1st!”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down (another) 400 points so far today, as oil prices continue to fall with no end in sight and a major investment bank announces new layoffs. Like 2008, this will be a year of panic. Prepare.

Lena Dunham Not So Sure About Hillary Clinton

J.K. Trotter · 01/20/16 09:59AM

Actress, memoirist, and newsletter publisher Lena Dunham is one of Hillary Clinton’s most prominent campaign surrogates. Their relationship has worked out well so far: Clinton benefits from the attention of Dunham’s Millennial fans, while Dunham, who made her name in comedy, gets to align herself (and her brand) with the one of the world’s most powerful politicians. According to Amy Chozick of The New York Times, however, Dunham initially expressed some misgivings about her future alignment with the Clinton clan, apparently before she began showing up at Hillary Clinton’s campaign rallies:

Hamilton Nolan · 01/20/16 09:18AM

There are millions of onetime college students in America who owe huge sums of money for student loans that bought them an education that turned out to have little market value. Now, there may be a ray of hope for their financial future.

Is Iggy Azalea the Sarah Palin of Rap?

Brendan O'Connor · 01/20/16 01:07AM

Haha, just kidding. But who would have thought that the phrase “Iggy Azalea Sarah Palin mash-up Vine” would bring so much joy in 2016?

Brendan O'Connor · 01/19/16 10:51PM

Earlier in this month, a computer in Missouri, part of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, discovered the largest known prime number: 274,207,281–1. Actually, the Guardian reports, the number was discovered in September, but nobody noticed until just recently. Anyway, congratulations everyone!

Ted Cruz Attack Ad on Donald Trump Can't Keep All These "P.C. Liberals" Straight

Brendan O'Connor · 01/19/16 08:45PM

The Courageous Conservatives PAC, which supports Ted Cruz, released a new campaign ad on Monday criticizing Donald Trump’s (actually hilarious) endorsement of Bill de Blasio for New York City mayor. When the scary voice-over mentions the mayor siding with “P.C. liberals to let the homeless run wild on city streets,” it shows an image of an elderly black man speaking into a megaphone. However, this photograph is from a demonstration against the de Blasio administration’s homelessness policies—specifically, the aggressive deployment of the NYPD in East Harlem to harry and harass the homeless people who live there.
