Steve Harvey Had Two Toddlers & Tiaras Kids on His Show and Then the World Melted

Rich Juzwiak · 10/08/12 05:05PM

Steve Harvey took the weirdest break from being a sanctimonious blowhard when he had some kids from Toddlers & Tiaras (and their parents) on his talk show today and handled everyone gently. He spoke to everyone without admonishing them, had little Kayla recreate her Shirley Temple crumping (I'll never tire of reminding people that I saw her do that live), and then asked her and her fellow undersized beauty queen Elizabeth to show him how to wave and to do "pretty feet."

Max Read · 10/08/12 04:00PM

For millennia, humans have wondered what happens after we die. Finally, we have a definitive answer: this week, in an exclusive cover story, Newsweek reveals that "Heaven Is Real." And it sounds suspiciously like a DMT trip as described on internet drug forums.

Man Who Desegregated Ole Miss Wants Nothing to Do with Desegregation Anniversary Celebration

Cord Jefferson · 10/08/12 03:55PM

Fifty years ago, black man James Meredith matriculated at the University of Mississippi after a lengthy legal battle with school administrators and state politicians. The governor of Mississippi himself, Ross Barnett, chastised President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy's support of Meredith as "evil and illegal forces of tyranny." Thousands of soldiers were deployed to ensure Meredith's safe entry onto campus, which led to a riot that killed two and injured hundreds. In the end, despite all the anger and violence, Meredith entered classes at Ole Miss and graduated in 1963 with a degree in political science.

Drew Magary · 10/08/12 03:15PM

Oh hey, here's a picture of Jennifer Aniston rocking a zillion-carat engagement ring that her fiance, Justin Theroux, "gave" her. Though I assume Aniston bought the ring herself six years ago and stashed it in a safety deposit box until the day she finally found a man who could properly pull off being dressed like a 1930s fighter pilot. This is a big rock. A huge rock. A very expensive, obnoxious, stupid fucking rock.

You Killed the American Greeting Card Industry

Caity Weaver · 10/08/12 02:50PM

In the past, when a father had something to say to his son—Today you are 6. Happy Birthday, for instance—he would enlist the help of a trained card-writing professional, because it was not deemed prudent for a man to address a child directly until that boy had reached adulthood and developed his own fully formed opinions. (Daughters were addressed on their wedding day; a solemn "Goodbye, young lady.")

North Korea's Greatest Popular Hero Is a Lathe

Hamilton Nolan · 10/08/12 01:28PM

Dear Honorable leader Kim Jong Un inspires glory among all of his well-fed and athletic socialist subjects simply by triumphantly touring his happy nation, joyously soaking in the pleasant aroma of the world's best flowers, and never, ever eating those flowers, because of the aforementioned well-fed status of the North Korean people. The overstuffed smiling citizens of the DPRK demand that a machine lathe be awarded all outstanding heroic accolades and awards!

Worst Writing Job Ever Offering 'Between .009 and .02 Per Word'

Cord Jefferson · 10/08/12 01:00PM

Back in September, we thought Prefix magazine's freelancer rates of $6 per day were about as bad as it could get in a desiccated media landscape where writers are exploited like the railroad workers of old. Today, a company out of Portland, Oregon, is making Prefix's rates look downright extravagant.
