Ricin-Tainted Letters About Gun Laws Intercepted En Route to Bloomberg

Cord Jefferson · 05/29/13 05:17PM

For the third time in two months, letters tainted with the poison ricin have been intercepted on the way to a public figure. In this case, letters addressed to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg arrived last week at both a Manhattan municipal building and the Washington, D.C., office of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an organization Bloomberg finances and helps lead.

It's Rumspringa Breaka, Bitches

Leah Beckmann · 05/29/13 04:44PM

Drinking! Selfies! Using abbreviated words and emoji to communicate thoughts via text message! If you're an Amish adolescent between the ages of 14 and 16, chances are you are engaging in these activities because, chances are, you are knee deep in your Rumspringa. For the Amish, Rumspringa, which literally translates to "running around," is a period of time when young Amish temporarily cast off their strict rules and traditions and are permitted to experience life outside the cloistered community. Once all the sexting is out of their system, the teens elect to either accept Baptism and rejoin their community, or, in very rare cases, leave forever.

A Florida man was asked to leave Walt Disney World this weekend after forgetting his handgun, which was loaded with hollow point bullets, on the seat of a ride at the Animal Kingdom. The man said he was unaware guns are banned from the park.

Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham Had the Weirdest Hang Last Weekend

Caity Weaver · 05/29/13 04:32PM

How was your Memorial Day weekend? Hopefully great. Hopefully a Memorial Day weekend you will never forget. Us Weekly reports that humble Christmas tree farmer Taylor Swift passed the weekend in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, where she recently purchased a sprawling $17M beachfront mansion filled to the brim with tasteful striped fabrics and whispers and ghosts. A couple weeks ago, a man from Illinois was arrested after allegedly swimming up to the mansion while Taylor Swift wasn't there, but he was not invited to Memorial Day. She was joined by Hailee Steinfeld, the 16-year-old who played a 14-year-old girl in True Grit, and Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr, who spent the weekend getting cut out of paparazzi photos of Taylor Swift and Hailee Steinfeld.

The-Dream’s IV Play Is Music's Most Honest Depiction of Hookup Culture

Rich Juzwiak · 05/29/13 04:09PM

Your enjoyment of the fifth album from Terius Nash, the R&B singer songwriter better known as The-Dream, will probably depend on your appetite for directness. Do you enjoy when people comment publicly on your privates? Do you strip down to nothing even before foreplay? Do you like to hear or say come-ons like, "And we gon' fuck all day / We gon' fuck all night," or "I need to fuck you / All day / All night," or "I can give a fuck about the foreplay / I want it now / I’m talkin’ straight sex"? If so, IV Play will speak to you like no R&B album ever has before.

We Drank Soylent, The Weird Food of The Future

Adrian Chen · 05/29/13 03:12PM

When 24-year-old software developer Rob Rhinehart stopped by Gawker's office last Wednesday afternoon he hadn't had a bite of solid food in four days, but was brimming with energy. Some of his pep was probably due to the fact that the previous day he launched a hugely successful crowd-funding campaign for Soylent, the liquid food replacement he invented and largely subsists on. It had received over $200,000 in a matter of hours. But the rest, he'd say, was science.

Man with Pencil Jammed in Head for 15 Years Removes Pencil from Head

Caity Weaver · 05/29/13 02:02PM

Do you have a pencil in your head right now? Probably not, right? Oh right, you have no way of knowing. The AP reports that doctors from Aachen University Hospital in Germany have just announced the successful removal of a four-inch pencil from the head of an Afghan man who spent 15 years blithely unaware that there was a pencil fully inside of him. (The extraction was performed in 2011, but the details of the case were just made public at a medical conference.)

Do Not Buy Newsweek

Hamilton Nolan · 05/29/13 01:36PM

Newsweek is for sale. Again! And what great timing: the CEO promises that Newsweek "will break-even in Q4 of this year." What reason could you possibly find not to buy?

Here's Robyn and The Lonely Island: Video Features #Art?

Maggie Lange · 05/29/13 01:00PM

Robyn has a new song and it's tremendous. (But manage those expectations.) It's not actually her song, she's just guesting on a new Lonely Island song called "Go Kindergarten." But! Remain interested, because the Robyn parts are sort of like a parody of a Robyn song, by Robyn. Oh and she also doesn't appear in the current music video for the song (it's billed as a dance rehearsal). However, as the video features whacky pants and people shaking it, she would probably approve.
