Summer TV Turns Desperate

Brian Moylan · 06/28/11 12:39PM

I'm thrilled that my favorite summer shows—like True Blood and Weeds—are finally coming back. But one thing is increasingly clear: There are a lot of desperate shows out there. And they're all resorting to the same tired tricks to try to make themselves fresh again.

Rapping Man Climbs Light Pole, Shuts Down Times Square

Adrian Chen · 06/28/11 09:59AM

Some crazy dude has climbed a light pole in Times Square, shutting down traffic. He's apparently rapping? Police are standing on top of a van, trying to coax him down, and you can watch the live feed here. Quite a crowd has developed around Rapping Light Pole Guy, and tourists are no doubt getting the wrong impression that this is something New Yorkers do all the time.

Pat Robertson's Predictably Insane Response to Gay Marriage in NY

Jim Newell · 06/27/11 03:26PM

Old grifting fundie fartsack Pat Robertson is getting tired of saying it over, and over, and over again, whenever some gay stuff comes up in the news, so please pay attention this time: The more gay couples are allowed to pick up marriage certificates at the court house and file their taxes jointly, the more likely it is that America's Christian God will destroy our civilization in a fit of rage. Thanks for nothing, Andy Cuomo.

Everything You Missed from New York's Celebratory Gay Pride Parade

Brian Moylan · 06/27/11 11:32AM

The passage of the marriage equality bill on Friday night couldn't have been timed any better, since it kicked off what was a celebratory Gay Pride weekend in New York City. Rather than a protest or political action, this year's parade down Fifth Avenue and across Greenwich Village was all about celebration. Who cares if the people in Middle America are scared by our drag queens, leather daddies, and dykes on bikes, this year was for us—and what a time it was!

New York's Archbishop Feeling 'Down' About Gay Marriage

Jeff Neumann · 06/27/11 06:03AM

Poor Archbishop Timothy Dolan. He already doesn't like the gays so much. And now the passage of gay marriage in New York is having a direct impact on his life. After mass yesterday he told the Daily News that he needs a little cheering up: "I sort of needed a good dose of the Lord's grace and mercy because I've been down a little recently, as you might imagine."

Inside Dominique Strauss-Kahn's Post-Check Out Pauper Lunch

Jeff Neumann · 06/27/11 02:35AM

According to one of Dominique Strauss-Kahn's lawyers, just after the alleged incident with a hotel maid the Frenchman had lunch with his daughter in Manhattan. Now the Times has the details. It seems that DSK and his daughter ate at McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant on West 52nd Street — a chain restaurant. How uncivilized.

Even Gay Marriage Requires Super-Rich Libertarians

Max Read · 06/25/11 11:25AM

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal both have behind-the-scenes accounts of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's successful push for gay marriage in New York. And (surprise!) the key was a bunch of rich Republicans.

Jim Newell · 06/24/11 09:34PM

The New York State Senate just passed a bill legalizing gay marriage, 33-29. It now heads to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's desk for his promised signature. The bystanders in Albany are going nuts. Go celebrate!

Endless New York Gay Marriage Debate Getting Uglier

Jim Newell · 06/24/11 02:11PM

Some of us suckers have woken up each morning this week hoping to see the headline, "New York Senate Finally Does Something About This Friggin Gay Marriage Bill," only to see the same story about how state Republicans are still thinkin' about it. And guess what? Today is no different, except that senators are getting pissy.

Adrian Chen · 06/23/11 03:13PM

During an event celebrating the launch of his new perfume at Macy's in Herald Square in New York, Justin Bieber was attacked by a crazed fan. Trouble in Teenland! The video above apparently shows the attack.

Will This New York Same-Sex Marriage Vote Ever Happen?

Jim Newell · 06/23/11 02:53PM

It's been difficult to follow the developments this week in the fight for same-sex marriage in New York. Someone on Twitter says "EXCLUSIVE: VOTE HAPPENING TONIGHT," and then five minutes later, "UPDATE: NO VOTE EVER." So let's try to make some sense of what's happening.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Prefers Frontal Handcuffing

Jeff Neumann · 06/17/11 12:41AM

The Manhattan district attorney's office yesterday filed a transcript of 17 statements made by Dominique Strauss-Kahn during and after his arrest on sexual assault charges last month. The Times has details of the statement, a voluntary disclosure form, that should be presented to defense attorneys. So, what were DSK's first hours in custody like? It took him a little while to really figure out what was going on:

Pad Thai Beatdown Verdict: Opera Singer Acquitted

Jeff Neumann · 06/16/11 07:21AM

Thanks to the tireless reporting of the New York Post's legal correspondents, we learned the vivid details of this one time that some rich people fought over the last Pad Thai in a Manhattan Trader Joe's frozen food aisle. And now we have the verdict: opera singer Marcella Caprario has been acquitted of all charges. In honor of this monumental verdict, let's revisit the Post's play-by-play of the January "fight" between Caprario and Dr. Catherine London:

Brian Moylan · 06/15/11 01:50PM

Today in rich people things: Here is a Manhattan couple selling their Chelsea townhouse that has a full-sized swimming pool in the living room. Yes, that's right. They have their own swimming pool that's probably larger than your whole apartment.
