Your Off-Year Election Guide

Pareene · 11/02/09 03:30PM

The only race tomorrow that will have anything to do with national political trends is a tiny congressional district in upstate New York. But there are other races that everyone will talk about as if they mean something.

Shep Smith Apologizes for Fox News' 'Lack of Balance'

John Cook · 10/27/09 03:19PM

Shepard Smith just cut off one of his correspondents at the knees, demanding after she conducted a live interview of the GOP's New Jersey gubernatorial candidate when she would give equal time to his Democratic rival. How awkward.

Gisele Bundchen isn't just trying to sell her Barrow Street townhouse. The supermodel and mom-to-be has also re-listed her triplex penthouse at 347 West 11th Street, which has been on and off the market for two years now. The 1,700-square-foot apartment, which hit the market for $10.9 million back in 2007, is now listed with PDE's Raphael De Niro for $4.5 million. [NYT, PDE]

Over in Jersey...

cityfile · 07/30/09 02:32PM

After doing his best to hang on and remain in office, Hoboken mayor Peter Cammarano—one of the dozen or so politicians caught up in that ginormous corruption scandal in New Jersey—has finally agreed to step down. The political damage to Gov. Jon Corzine is only beginning. Pollsters are already giving Corzine's Republican challenger the advantage in the upcoming gubernatorial elections. [NYT]

Everybody in New Jersey Was Arrested Today

John Cook · 07/23/09 06:00PM

Federal prosecutors unveiled a mammoth corruption and money-laundering investigation in New Jersey today, arresting 44 people, including the mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus, and Ridgefield; two assemblymen; and five rabbis. Also some guy who's been selling human kidneys for ten years.

Just Another Day in Jersey

cityfile · 07/23/09 09:25AM

Residents of the Garden State woke up this morning to hear that more than three dozen elected officials, religious leaders, and local businessmen had been arrested as part of a federal investigation into corruption and money laundering. And it already sounds like a movie dreamed up by a bunch of Hollywood screenwriters with over-active imaginations. In addition to the politicians accused of playing a role in the scheme—the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus were both arrested—there's a network of Orthodox rabbis involved, and the money laundering ring is alleged to have trafficked in everything from human organs and fake designer handbags. Congrats, Jersey residents. You really outdid yourselves this time. [AP, WSJ]

Lil' Kim Will Not Rule Over Hoboken, After All

cityfile · 04/10/09 04:43PM

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but despite what you may have heard earlier on Eyewitness News or 1010 WINS earlier today, Lil' Kim is not interested in becoming the next mayor of Hoboken. It turns out the story was circulated by a man claiming to be the rapper's publicist. Not that she necessarily minded the rumor: She described it as "flattering" in an interview with Extra, which means you may still be able to convince her to take part if you act quickly enough. Poppin' Your Collar: Foppish?

Hamilton Nolan · 01/15/09 10:26AM

For years, men who made the very personal decision to pop their collars—sometimes while gettin dollars—have been ridiculed. But now the august Wall Street Journal officially declares that collar-poppin is not "foppish" a bit!

Observer At Center Of Exciting Criminal Conspiracy, Maybe!

Ryan Tate · 12/02/08 04:51AM

Did you know the Observer is subsidized by an illicit slush fund? It shamefully is, according to a lawsuit filed by the former president of one of the Kushner Companies. When developer Charles Kushner bought a $1.8 billion office tower, he routed $18 million back to himself as commission on the mortgage, then allegedly siphoned $5 million off that for son Jared's cash-bleeding weekly newspaper.

The Recession Isn't All Bad News

cityfile · 11/13/08 11:17AM

You thought the only news these days was depressing? Not necessarily! The Port Authority reports traffic at the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels dropped 6.4 percent in October, compared with last year, and traffic fell 4.4 percent at the bridges between New Jersey and Staten Island. Much of the decline, of course, can be explained by the thousands of people who have lost their jobs in financial services in recent months. But if you're looking for cheery news to brighten your day, you can probably assume that some percentage of the dropoff consists of oiled-up dudes from New Jersey or Staten Island who have been having second thoughts about cruising around Manhattan in a white Hummer limo with neon trim on Friday nights. And in these tough times you've got to take the positive news anywhere you can get it.
