A Modest Proposal

Why do New York's bridges and tunnels have such boring names? Wouldn't it be possible to come up with something more creative? A few thoughts (and suggestions) via Quite All Right:

Plunging Profits for NYC Pot Dealers

It isn't just conservative lawmakers who are worried about New Jersey's new medical marijuana law, which gives people with debilitating diseases the right to purchase up to two ounces of marijuana each month. Pot dealers are concerned, too! "It's going to cut a lot of the bridge-and-tunnel customers," one dealer tells the Daily News, adding that if he tried to compete with the legal stuff based on price, he'd lose "hundreds of thousands of dollars a year." If you're out of work and were thinking about dealing a bit on the side to pay the bills—not such a bad idea, at least up until now!—you make want to think about some other way to make quick cash. High Times in Jersey

"The New Jersey Legislature approved a measure on Monday that would make the state the first in the region and the 14th in the nation to legalize the use of marijuana for medical reasons." [NYT]

Bruce Takes a Pass

Chris Christie will be sworn in as New Jersey's governor next month. But his inauguration isn't going to go off as he'd hoped. The lifelong Bruce Springsteen fan had "wanted nothing more" than to have the Boss perform at the event on January 19. But that isn't going to happen. Springsteen, who just so happens to be a lifelong Democrat, has turned down the request because he "doesn't want to get involved in state politics." [NYT]

It's Better in Jersey

It was embarrassing enough that the New York State Senate voted down a bill to legalize gay marriage last week. Now it looks like a similar bill in New Jersey may end up passing before the end of the year, which would make it the sixth state to do so, not to mention remind us all that the land of Tony Soprano is officially more progressive and open-minded than its neighbor on the other side of the Hudson. Corzine Heads South

Don't worry about Jon Corzine, who suffered a bruising defeat last week in his bid for reelection as New Jersey's governor. He seems to be holding up just fine. Corzine and girlfriend Sharon Elghanayan jetted off to St. Barts on a private plane last Friday and have since been spotted sunning themselves on the beach, although given the weather forecast, that may not continue for much longer.
