The GOP Would Like Everyone to Know That It's Fine, Everything Is Fine

Alex Pareene · 07/18/16 03:54PM

CLEVELAND — In 2012, the non-TV press at least had a halfway decent view of the stage. The press stand seats here in Quicken Loan Arenas are effectively behind the podium, which will eventually have the unintended effect of making it clear to the media when any speaker goes off-prompter (not that anyone scheduled to speak this week is known for that, or anything).

What Politicians Say Doesn't Matter

Jordan Sargent · 02/22/16 05:30PM

Today on Twitter, CSPAN surfaced a video from 1992 in which Joe Biden argues on the Senate floor that President George H.W. Bush not offer a Supreme Court nominee in the event that a justice retired before that year’s presidential election.

Republicans Can't Decide How They Won't Confirm Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

Allie Jones · 02/18/16 02:00PM

While conspiracy theorists continue to suss out the real cause of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death, both sides of the Senate are preparing themselves for a long, insane fight over his replacement. Does Obama stand a chance of getting a nominee confirmed in the next 11 months? Here’s how the battle’s looking so far.

Sen. Mitch McConnell easily beat back a Republican primary challenge from Matt Bevin, the Tea Party-approved cockfighting enthusiast who was vying for his Kentucky Senate seat. Lesson learned: Don't mess around fighting with cocks.

Angry Cockfighters in Kentucky Vow to "Destroy" Mitch McConnell

Adam Weinstein · 02/20/14 01:00PM

In Washington, Mitch McConnell is a power broker. In Kentucky, where the senator faces a tough re-election slog, he's just the big-government sonofabitch that made life tougher for hardscrabble locals trying to make a living by breeding animals to rip each other to death for sport.

Senate Planning Shutdown Deal; Will the House Screw It All Up?

Cord Jefferson · 10/15/13 08:14PM

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are reportedly in the final stages of working out a deal to reopen the government and avoid a national default. Great news. Now the question is if said deal will be able to get through the goddamn mess that is the House of Representatives.

Tea Party Furious Over IRS Thinking Tea Party Sounds Political

Ken Layne · 05/10/13 01:57PM

Tea Party conservatives are furious over the IRS admission that self-declared non-profit groups with the words "Tea Party" or "Patriots" in their names were checked for political activity not allowed by the rules for 501(c) not-for-profit organizations. What's wrong with a good charity named Tea Party Patriots, anyway? It's not like such groups would engage in election year political activity or anything, right?

Here's Secret Video of Mitch McConnell Talking About Attacking Ashley Judd's Mental Health

Adam Weinstein · 04/09/13 08:15AM

How freaked out was Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) about a possible election challenge from movie star Ashley Judd? So freaked that in February he assembled a secret meeting of advisors on how to use a "wealth of material" from the actress' mental health history to paint her as an egomaniacal "mentally unbalanced" anti-Christian hysterical lady.

Senate Hits New Low as Mitch McConnell Filibusters Himself

Jordan Sargent · 12/06/12 09:04PM

Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are still at war over the oncoming "fiscal cliff" — a term used to describe the combination of tax increases and spending cuts set to go into effect on Jan. 1 — because they are children. Neither side wants to see the American economy fly off the so-called "cliff," and something is going to be done about it before the end of the year so that we don't get kicked into another recession (which is exactly the situation that played itself out with the debt ceiling). Of course, the Senate can't work on a gravely crucial agreement without self-important grandstanding and petty political posturing. Which brings us to Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, the esteemed elderly turtle from Kentucky.
