CNN is “expanding the definition of news” by laying off 40 editorial employees. According to the Financial Times, one of the axed staffers was “a pregnant producer who was two weeks away from giving birth to twins.”

All good things must come to an end. The Chief Executive Officer of Rupert Murdoch’s Dow Jones, Lex Fenwick, is leaving the News Corp subsidiary, according to an announcement posted on the company’s website. Fenwick joined Dow Jones in 2010 after 25 years at Bloomberg LP, and oversaw the development of DJX, a product designed to compete with Bloomberg LP’s wire service. Fenwick was also the subject of an ex-Bloomberg employee’s unhinged resignation letter. The pertinent bit:

The new VP/ publisher of Sports Illustrated is Brendan Ripp—who happens to be the son of Joe Ripp, who is the CEO of Time Inc., the company that owns Sports Illustrated. Huh. Seems strange to see this sort of nepotism in the media world.

There's a new Pogue in town. According to an email from the New York Times' Technology Editor Suzanne Spector, "we have completed the search for our new State of the Art columnist." NYT staffers close to the tech desk say Farhad Manjoo's name has been bandied—but he just took a new gig at the Wall Street Journal.

In the fall of last year, I noticed a lump in my left neck which felt to me like a run-of-the-mill swollen lymph node. When it didn't go away I sought the advice of a doctor. Several months and countless medical tests later, the official diagnosis is stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Wonkette itself was spun off (to me!) in 2008, and continues as a filthy website about the vile comedy of politics, led by Wonkette-in-Chief Rebecca Schoenkopf.

Ezra Klein may be preparing to leave the Washington Post after the Post's publisher, Katherine Weymouth, and owner, Jeff Bezos, failed to support Klein's idea for a new WaPo site dedicated to topics outside of political policy. A source told the New York Times Klein was asking for an eight-figure investment.

Kathleen Parker, the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning(!) racial alarmist columnist, ended her year proudly by being named one of the Least Important Writers of 2013. In honor of that, she's made sure that her latest column immediately qualifies her as one of the Least Important Writers of 2014.

With a flowery but platitudinous column of cobbled-together homilies on the most hackneyed of subjects ("For 2014, Tweet Less, Read More"), Frank Bruni closes out 2013 in the most Frank Bruni-esque possible way. We'd say "better luck next year," but we're not optimistic.

A headline on a recent PolicyMic story reads: "This is America's Most Apocalyptic, Violent City — And You've Probably Never Heard Of It." That city would be Flint, Michigan. The story's author: Jamie Dimon's daughter.

The New York Post knows a broad when it sees one. On Sunday the unprofitable tabloid published photos of Bill de Blasio’s chief spokeswoman, Lis Smith, inviting disgraced New York Governor and married man Eliot Spitzer into her Soho apartment. Very understandably, the paper wants her fired.
