The Daily Show Airs Another Occupy Wall Street Hit Piece

Matt Cherette · 11/16/11 11:37PM

While Occupy Wall Street has had its host of celebrity backers, Jon Stewart has never really been one of them. Aside from a fleeting show of support here and there, the Daily Show host has covered the Occupy movement with a more critical eye. On tonight's program, Stewart continued his track record with the above field piece, which featured Samantha Bee's investigation into how the Occupiers had become what they initially fought against.

Jon Stewart Goes Off on Jerry Sandusky

Matt Cherette · 11/15/11 11:37PM

In an unbearable phone interview with Bob Costas on last night's Rock Center, accused Penn State child rapist Jerry Sandusky kinda-sorta denied being sexually attracted to young boys. On tonight's Daily Show, an indignant Jon Stewart unloaded on Sandusky: "You can't even bring yourself to lie emphatically!"

Jon Stewart Highlights Some Surprises from the Latest GOP Debate

Matt Cherette · 11/15/11 12:37AM

On Saturday night, CBS brought us the first hour of a 90-minute debate between the Republican candidates for President (apparently, an NCIS rerun was more important than an extra half-hour of politics). But as Jon Stewart observed on tonight's Daily Show, mixed in with the standard GOP talking points—like the belief that waterboarding isn't torture—were some less crazy ones, and from the unlikeliest of candidates.

Jon Stewart Asks Nancy Pelosi Why Congress Sucks So Much

Matt Cherette · 11/09/11 11:58PM

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stopped by The Daily Show tonight to chat with Jon Stewart about everything from why Congress sucks so much to... why Congress sucks so much! Here are some highlights of the interview, a full version of which you can find later on the program's official website.

Jon Stewart: Herman Cain's Enemy Is the Truth

Matt Cherette · 11/08/11 12:05AM

Jon Stewart opened tonight's Daily Show with a recap of the latest developments in Herman Cain's sexual harassment scandal, including the news that a fourth accuser had come forward to tell her story. Cain, of course, stuck to his "Blame the media" narrative." But as Stewart then explained, it's hard to make a point when the truth—unlike Fox News—isn't on your side.

Jon Stewart Scolds the 'Bad Occupiers' of Occupy Wall Street

Matt Cherette · 11/03/11 11:09PM

Jon Stewart started out on tonight's Daily Show by acknowledging that the Occupy Wall Street movement resonates with many people across the country. Except for "one small caveat." Stewart then replayed footage from a previous episode in which he warned the movement against violence, followed by a clip of protesters in Oakland vandalizing a Whole Foods store.

Jon Stewart Isn't Buying What Herman Cain Is Selling

Matt Cherette · 11/02/11 11:16PM

When Jon Stewart covered Herman Cain's sexual harassment scandal on Monday's Daily Show, the story was in its infancy. As media coverage of the allegations spread, so did the number of inconsistencies in Cain's story, and tonight Stewart took a look at the GOP presidential candidate's ever-evolving statements on the scandal.

Jon Stewart and Condoleezza Rice Make Fun of Gaddafi, Spar Over Iraq

Matt Cherette · 11/01/11 11:12PM

Condoleezza Rice was Jon Stewart's guest on the Daily Show this evening. The interview started out friendly enough as Stewart and Rice shared laughs over Muammar Gaddafi's creepy obsession with the former secretary of state. But there was plenty of tension in the room when the subject turned to the decision to invade Iraq. Highlights from the interview are above.

Jon Stewart: Cain Is Creepy, Perry's Just Drunk

Matt Cherette · 10/31/11 11:35PM

Over the weekend, we learned that Herman Cain faced accusations of sexual harassment while heading the National Restaurant Association in the '90s. We also saw video of a possibly inebriated (and pretty fey) Rick Perry delivering a bizarre speech in New Hampshire. On tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart poked fun at both Cain and Perry as he weighed what effect these mishaps will have on their presidential aspirations. And while it's still too early to know for sure, there was one thing of which Stewart was certain: "Mitt Romney is the luckiest Motherfudger on Earth."

Jon Stewart: 'What the Fuck Happened in Oakland?'

Matt Cherette · 10/27/11 12:30AM

When the Occupy Wall Street movement began spreading across the U.S., one of its biggest satellite protests took root in Oakland. But after two weeks of peaceful interactions with the city, Occupy Oakland protesters sparred with gas canister-firing police yesterday, leaving an Iraq War veteran in critical condition with a head injury. On tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart echoed the views of many when he questioned Oakland's handling of the situation.

Jon Stewart: Republican Candidates Are Too Extreme Even for Other Republicans

Matt Cherette · 10/25/11 11:26PM

On tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart brought up the increasingly extreme rhetoric being spewed by Republican presidential candidates, noting that even Pat Robertson expressed his concern about it in recent days. Of course, it's not that Robertson really disagrees with the candidates. He just wants them to keep their voices down long enough to win the general election: "The first rule of Right Club? Don't talk about Right Club."

Jon Stewart Lashes Out at Republicans for Opposing Iraq Withdrawal

Matt Cherette · 10/24/11 10:34PM

On tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart cheered President Obama's announcement last week that he'll withdraw all remaining U.S. soldiers in Iraq by year's end, a date originally set by President Bush in 2008. So it was strange for Stewart to see many big-name Republicans, like John McCain and Michele Bachmann, using their weekend to condemn Obama for sticking to a plan that he hadn't even crafted, one that ends a war, no less.

Jon Stewart: Are We Expecting Too Much From Occupy Wall Street?

Matt Cherette · 10/19/11 11:16PM

Al Sharpton joined Jon Stewart on The Daily Show tonight. When the subject turned to Occupy Wall Street, Sharpton expressed his support for the movement, but Stewart wasn't quite as enthusiastic, taking issue with some of the protesters' attention-getting theatrics. Stewart also wondered about where Occupy Wall Street goes from here. "What they've done there is so unusual that it can't be ignored," Stewart started. But now that they've managed to capture the world's attention, we're left asking, "When are you going to change the world for us?"

The Daily Show on Occupy Wall Street: Shoot the Messenger

Matt Cherette · 10/18/11 11:18PM

Jon Stewart sat out part of tonight's Daily Show so correspondent John Oliver could report on Occupy Wall Street from Zuccotti Park. As Oliver wandered around, he encountered some of the protest's stranger characters and customs—"How amongst the 99% did I still feel like I didn't fit in?"—before consulting with "the 98% of Americans who might agree with the protester's message if it weren't for the protesters themselves."
