Iraqi Officials: Head of ISIS Wounded In Airstrike

The Associated Press is reporting that the leader of ISIS (aka the Islamic State aka ISIL), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was wounded in an airstrike on Saturday. Brief statements from Iraq’s Defense and Interiors Ministries said that al-Baghdadi had been wounded, working off of intel provided by informants within ISIS. They did not elaborate on the extent of said injuries.

The White House announced today that President Obama has authorized the deployment of 1,500 additional troops to Iraq in the continuing fight against ISIS, doubling the United States' current presence in the country. Officials confirmed to CNN that the additional troops "will not have a combat role."

According to a report published by the New York Times Sunday, the hostages were "routinely beaten and subjected to waterboarding." "It was when there was no blood, that we knew he had suffered something even worse," said one released captive.

ABC News reports that the FBI caught three American girls, ages 15-16, en route to Syria to join militant groups. A law enforcement official said the girls had made their way to Germany and were planning to join groups, including ISIS, "to fulfill what they believe is some vision that has been put out on a slick media campaign."

U.S.-led airstrikes continued in Syria overnight, with attacks launched across four provinces in the northern and eastern regions of the country. Appearing on 60 Minutes last night, President Obama told Steve Kroft, "[Director of National Intelligence] Jim Clappper has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria," pointing to instability in the country caused by civil war as the opening the militants needed to gain their foothold.

British Parliament voted today in favor in joining the American-led air campaign against ISIS targets in Iraq. Military action was approved by a 524 to 43 vote after seven hours of debate. Prime Minister David Cameron said he recalled Parliament Friday in the hopes of the matter going to a vote. "This is not the stuff of fantasy—it is happening in front of us and we need to face up to it," Cameron said.
