CNN has more details about the trio of American teens who were caught by the FBI trying to join ISIS. They carried out their plan just like you'd imagine, by faking sick, skipping school, and stealing some cash.

CNN reports:

The first indication that something was wrong was a phone call from his daughter's Denver area school to let Assad Ibrahim know that she had not come to class.

He dialed her cell. And she answered. But, officials say, she didn't tell him that she was on her way to Syria to join ISIS.

She was just late for class, that's all, Ibrahim's daughter told him on Friday...

The other two girls who joined her are sisters. They told their dad Ali Farah that they were sick Friday morning, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's runaway report. Then, around 10:30 am, they said they were going to the library. They met up with their friend instead and hopped a plane to Turkey via Frankfurt, Germany. German authorities stopped them there and sent them back to the U.S.

According to CNN, the sisters took $2000 cash for their expedition. Farah and Ibrahim realized something was up when they noticed their girls' passports were missing along with the cash. They alerted the authorities.

Since the girls are minors, ages 15-17, it's not clear if they will be charged with anything. They were questioned and released to their parents when they returned to the States. Secretary of State John Kerry said today,

It is under investigation now. Our folks are looking at the causes and impacts very carefully...this is an example of good cooperation between us, and the increased vigilance of law enforcement on this issue of the movement of people from one country to another.

We are very, very grateful for Germany for their cooperation with us on this particular incident of young folks who were traveling.

CNN notes that the girls are of Sudanese and Somali descent.
