The Lamborghini Imbroglio in the Hamptons

cityfile · 08/14/08 06:45AM

Sad news for Hamptons residents looking to blow $350,000 on a Lamborghini this summer: Manhattan Motorcars Hamptons, the dealership in Westhampton Beach that caters to the rich and even richer, may lose its right to sell the insanely expensive autos in the near future. In June, Lamborghini's parent company, Automobili Lamborghini SpA, informed the dealership that they were no longer using the Lamborghini name with permission. (The legal threat was prompted by Manhattan Motorcars' move to a new location, one which Lamborghini, it seems, didn't approve of.) Now Manhattan Motorcars is fighting back. It's slapped Lamborghini with a $20 million lawsuit for breach of contract, among other things. The court records—and messy details—are below.

Hamptonites Laugh in the Face of Economic Slowdown

cityfile · 08/13/08 12:22PM

Most people who work in the service industry are (understandably) nervous right now, aware that their potential customers are counting the pennies and denying themselves expensive dinners and shopping trips. But you'll be relieved to hear that there's at least one place immune from such mundane concerns. According to Bloomberg News, the Hamptons' restaurants, hotels, and shops are overrun with mega-rich spenders for whom "recession is something that happens to other people." Like lung cancer, or identity theft!

Murder In the Hamptons

Sheila · 08/11/08 02:56PM

A corrections officer working as a bouncer has died after being senselessly assaulted by a patron at the microbrewery Southampton Publick House. Apparently Andrew Reister, 40, asked Anthony Oddone, 25, to step off a table during Ladies' Night, and Oddone—a college golfer and caddie—attacked him, putting Reister in a coma. Southampton hasn't had a murder in 20 years, but this isn't quite as sensational as the murder of millionaire Ted Ammon (who was murdered by his wife's lover), which was turned into a movie. So while it's geographically a Hamptons murder, it lacks the social status and tawdry spouse-cheating aspects that would make it the next Murder In the Hamptons. [Hamptons.com]

Aby Rosen Takes On the Birds (and Cops)

cityfile · 08/11/08 08:02AM

Aby Rosen has never been known as the best neighbor. Remember that nasty feud last year with fellow residents of the Upper East Side over the building he wanted to construct on Madison Avenue? It turns out he isn't very sensitive when it comes to his neighbors in the Hamptons either. An official spotted two of Rosen's sons (we're guessing that would be Charlie, pictured left, and Gaby, since his other two kids are babies) driving their ATV scooters in an endangered bird habitat, and notified the Southampton Village police. But Rosen wasn't about to take responsibility for his sons' intrusion on protected land that's home to the endangered piping plover: "Rosen advised the officer to take a hike and brazenly locked the offending vehicles in a garage after the cop threatened to impound them." The cop's response? "The officer then obtained a warrant to have Rosen arrested on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing governmental administration."

Edgar Bronfman Jr. Sells in Amagansett

cityfile · 08/07/08 07:01AM

Edgar Bronfman Jr. has one less thing to worry about. The Post's Braden Keil reports today that the heir and Warner Music CEO has finally gone into contract to sell the Amagansett property that has been on and off the market since 2006. The three-acre estate, which Bronfman purchased for $12.5 million in 2005, includes a six-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot main house as well as a guest house and pool house. A sale price hasn't been disclosed (yet)—it was last on the market for $14.7 million—but you can take a look around at the property after the jump.

Down and Out in East Hampton

Sheila · 07/25/08 10:34AM

East Hampton! It is the home and summer playground for many rich, like Martha Stewart and P. Diddy. But in fact, the town is going broke—like the rest of the country, they have almost nothing in their bank account and are about $12 mil in the hole. One solution: raise property taxes! But not too much—don't want to scare the rich. (While we're all piling on, we might as well mention that the town's website is very 1996.) [NY Post]

Southampton Hates Latinos, Or So Says a Diner Owner

cityfile · 07/22/08 01:31PM

The town of Southampton, the Southampton Police Department, and a handful of others were slapped with a lawsuit today by the owners of the Hampton Bays Diner on Montauk Highway. The charges? The owners of the restaurant, Frank and Maria Vlahadamis, contend that when they started playing Spanish music on Saturday nights—and real, live Latinos started turning up—the town and the State Liquor Authority created a "trumped-up" case to shutter the diner. It's juicy stuff. After the jump, you can peruse the entire 77-page complaint, accounts of Gestapo-like tactics, and the allegedly racist rhetoric uttered by town officials.

Gay? Bi-Curious? Beach-Lover? Don't Let This One Get Away!

ian spiegelman · 07/19/08 06:33PM

This went up yesterday, and it's still live, so your summer could be made! "So here's the deal... I'm usually in the Hamptons with my girlfriend at my folks house, not far from the town of West Hampton. However, luck would have it that my folks are going away for a week and we're at the house alone. We like to mix it up and have fun with another guy, keeps our relationship interesting and fresh. She's only into guys but knows I like getting it on with another guy while she either watches or gets involved. So what I'm offering is this... if you're looking to get away from the madness of your share house this weekend and looking to stay with us for a couple of nights, let me know how willing you are to please us... sexually. If we think it matches with our style, we'll expect you this evening. Here's a picture of me for starters..."

Poor Rich People Having Less Fun in the Hamptons This Year

ian spiegelman · 07/19/08 07:15AM

Oh pooh! The moneyed slobs of the Hamptons are feeling the pinch of the recession this summer! Tiffy's gala will be positively ruined! "Trustees of the Children's Museum of the East End rejected a dinner dance at a rented farm in favor of a cocktail party on the museum grounds here, replaced a five-piece rock ‘n' roll cover band with a teenage jazz combo and slashed ticket prices to $150 from $450, but still only drew about 150 guests, half the number that turned out for the benefit last year... And there are still hundreds of tickets left for the annual Art for Life gala, also scheduled for Saturday night, at the East Hampton estate of Russell Simmons, the rap impresario." People, won't someone please think of the rappers?!

Wondering how to pull off the perfect clam bake on the beach? Let Luigi Tadini, PlumTV's newest correspondent, show you! The Brazilian social scenester is planning his "un-birthday party" at the Surf Lodge in Montauk. (His real birthday is in April, but the poor thing didn't get to celebrate.) After the jump, watch the real-life Chuck Bass dance, frolick on the beach, take off his shirt, and chew slowly to the soothing sounds of a blues soundtrack.

The $100 Million Nunnery

cityfile · 07/17/08 08:08AM

Good news for anyone looking to give Ira Rennert a run for his money in the Hamptons real estate market! The Post reports the 21,000-square-foot nunnery known as Villa Maria in Water Mill is about to hit the market at more than $100 million. (It's now owned by Vincent Camuto, the co-founder of Nine West.) In addition to the manse, which features 12 bedrooms and a ballroom, the property also comes with three guest cottages and 1,200 feet of shoreline. It's a little bit more modest than Rennert's "Fair Field," but you can always install the two bowling alleys yourself.

Arden's Cry for Help

cityfile · 07/16/08 11:38AM

New details on Arden Wohl's arrest in East Hampton last weekend! As you may (or may not) recall, the headband-obsessed socialite was arrested after she defaced the Ralph Lauren store on Main Street, penning the words "Ralphy Lipshits" in red lipstick and stealing a few American flags from the shop. And then? "She was arrested and handcuffed at approximately 2:30 p.m., transported back to headquarters and charged with making graffiti and petit larceny." Not quite as amusing is the maximum penalty she could end up with: A prison sentence of up to a year. [NYO]

Recession Special! Chopper Rides to Hamptons Available

cityfile · 07/03/08 11:09AM

Good news for those of you who haven't made your arrangements to get to the Hamptons this afternoon. Wings Air rep Amy McCray assures us she still has a helicopter available for this evening, assuming you can't deal with the traffic on the LIE and you're willing to pay through the nose to get to East Hampton in 44 minutes flat. But act fast: There's only one unbooked flight that will get you to the East End by 8pm (just in time to get home and change for your night out at Kobe Beach Club or Dune!) and it'll cost you $3,565 for you and four friends to make the one-way trip.

New Novel Lifts Lid On Mysterious Subculture!

cityfile · 06/25/08 07:52AM

It was probably inevitable: A "photogenic" twenty-something has written a chick-lit novel about the crazy exploits of summer sharers in the Hamptons. Jasmin Rosemberg, who used to chronicle her share house experiences for the New York Post, will publish How The Other Half Hamptons today, a book filled with "drunken escapades, hot tub hookups, hideous hangovers, and juvenile mischief." Her editor says it's "the perfect summer read." Oh, these canny publishers and their brilliantly inventive marketing slogans. It almost makes you wonder why no one reads anymore!

Emily Brill's Hamptons Rock-Out

ian spiegelman · 06/08/08 12:45PM

Media heiress Emily Brill is just like the rest of us. When she's cruising beach-ward on the Long Island Expressway at the start of a killer Hamptons weekend, she simply must RAWK to a little of that sweet, sweet GNR! And nearly kills herself and her galpal in the process. Vid after the jump.
