Swedish Preschool Bans Gender

Richard Lawson · 06/28/11 02:18PM

A public preschool in a liberal part of Stockholm has created an environment where gendered pronouns are not used, the children are referred to as "friends" instead of "boys and girls," and toys are deliberately gender neutral. Sounds crazy!

In Defense of Shit Talking

Hamilton Nolan · 06/28/11 01:44PM

New York Times media guy David Carr is in big trouble for going on Bill Maher's HBO show and making a joke about how Kansas, Missouri, and other "middle places" are "the dance of the low sloping foreheads." (That means "dumb," for anyone reading in Kansas or Missouri.)

MySpace To Be Sold for Scrap

Ryan Tate · 06/28/11 12:55PM

Well, this is embarrassing: News Corp. will probably sell MySpace for less than a tenth of what it paid for the social network, and for less than a third of its stated minimum bid. And, yes, big layoffs are coming.

Summer TV Turns Desperate

Brian Moylan · 06/28/11 12:39PM

I'm thrilled that my favorite summer shows—like True Blood and Weeds—are finally coming back. But one thing is increasingly clear: There are a lot of desperate shows out there. And they're all resorting to the same tired tricks to try to make themselves fresh again.

Shia LaBeouf: Megan Fox Cheated on Her Husband with Me

Maureen O'Connor · 06/28/11 10:30AM

Shia says he had an affair with Megan, but he might be lying. Jake Gyllenhaal gets "touchy-feely" with a lady. Hugh Hefner adds another lady to his harem. Nicole Kidman's baby is a ginger. Tuesday gossip kisses and tells.

Rapping Man Climbs Light Pole, Shuts Down Times Square

Adrian Chen · 06/28/11 09:59AM

Some crazy dude has climbed a light pole in Times Square, shutting down traffic. He's apparently rapping? Police are standing on top of a van, trying to coax him down, and you can watch the live feed here. Quite a crowd has developed around Rapping Light Pole Guy, and tourists are no doubt getting the wrong impression that this is something New Yorkers do all the time.

David Letterman's Advice for Michele Bachmann

Matt Cherette · 06/28/11 04:29AM

Michele Bachmann officially launched her presidential campaign yesterday in Waterloo, Iowa by accidentally comparing herself to John Wayne Gacy, the infamous gay rapist clown serial killer from the '70s. How serious was Bachmann's gaffe? According to David Letterman, who spent four minutes on Monday's Late Show obsessing over it before giving Bachmann a rambling bit of unsolicited campaign advice, very serious!

Gabrielle Giffords Stands, Waves in First Public Appearance Since Shooting

Max Read · 06/27/11 11:06PM

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made her first public appearance on Monday since being shot in the head in January, standing and waving to the crowd at a NASA awards ceremony held at Space Center Houston. She didn't speak publicly, but "appeared to chat with people sitting around her, and laughed" at the introduction of her husband's crew. As encouraging as the appearance might have been, Giffords' staff has been attempting to manage over-optimistic expectations; her doctors have said that it'll be at least a year before they have a sense of the extent of her recovery. The First Advertising Campaign Aimed at Monkeys

Max Read · 06/27/11 09:47PM

We've always said, when drunk, that monkeys are the great untapped demographic of the 21st century. Well! Someone has finally listened: Advertising firm Proton has created the first campaign directed entirely at monkeys.

Meet the Woman Who Sprayed Cops With Her Breast Milk

Max Read · 06/27/11 08:46PM

Police in Delaware, Ohio, were called to the Bridgewater Banquet & Conference Center early Saturday morning to handle a domestic violence call. What they found was Stephanie Robinette, 30, a charter-school teacher, who, while attending a wedding at the center, had "gotten drunk and struck [her husband] several times before locking herself in a car." Here is how Delaware County Sheriff Walter L. Davis III describes what happened:

Glenn Beck Catches a Movie in the Park

Max Read · 06/27/11 07:57PM

Two tipsters (acting independently!) sent us some photos of Fox News host Glenn Beck gathering ideas for his show by watching tonight's showing of Hitchcock's The 39 Steps at Bryant Park in New York City. The movie, of course, is about a man who accidentally uncovers a network of spies, operating under the watchful eye of Van Jones. Beck was joined, apparently by his family; they sat (of course!) on an American-flag blanket. Seen someone interesting? Email it to stalker@gawker.com or post it yourself to #stalker.
