Matt Cherette · 10/04/11 01:21AM

Rick Perry is taking heat following the revelation that for decades his family has visited a West Texas hunting camp named "Niggerhead." While Jon Stewart covered the controversy with a geography lesson on Monday's Daily Show, Stephen Colbert—still reeling from his defense of Perry's debate disaster last week—was decidedly more aggressive on the Report, declaring the kerfuffle "much ado about nothing" in a segment with enough racially insensitive rhetoric to fill an episode of Fox & Friends.

Here's a trailer for The Lady, French director Luc Besson's new biopic of Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Prize-winner Aung Saan Suu Kyi. And if you're going to make a movie about one of the world's most famous nonviolent activists, why not cast one of the world's most famous martial arts movie stars?

Bill O'Reilly's Elevator Showdown with Andy Rooney

Matt Cherette · 10/03/11 09:52PM

Since Andy Rooney's final "Here's what I hate this week!" 60 Minutes segment aired last night, fans of the curmudgeonly old coot must look elsewhere (e.g. Curb Your Enthusiasm) for grouchy inspiration. Or they could just watch this clip of Bill O'Reilly telling a story tonight about the time he found himself in an elevator with Rooney, who he'd never met, and whose first words to him were, "You'll never make it." Because obviously.

Is This the First Openly Gay Campaign Ad to Feature the Candidate's Kid?

TPM · 10/03/11 09:05PM

A lot is changing on the gay rights landscape. The military - once a home for staunch homophobia - is now one of the more welcoming employers for openly gay people. Where the last Democratic president sat down and signed the Defense Of Marriage Act into law, the current Democratic president is on a mission to tear it down.

Surprisingly, Fox News Didn't Use This Video of a Smart, Articulate Protester

Max Read · 10/03/11 09:00PM

Here's a video of Occupy Wall Street protester Jesse LaGreca being interviewed by a Fox News producer last Wednesday for a segment for Greta Van Susteren's show. "We're here [...] to give you fair coverage," the producer tells LaGreca, only... this segment never aired, while a bunch of others, involving much less articulate and issue-literate protesters, did (on other shows, to be fair). I wonder why. [New York Observer]

The Insane Temptations of Two Tech Bloggers

Ryan Tate · 10/03/11 08:54PM

For TechCrunch's MG Siegler, temptation came from the clubby world of venture capital. For the New York Times' Nick Bilton, the lure was in the blindingly lit studios of a TV network. The writers made different choices—one took the money, the other turned it down—but the scope of their offers alone is the sign of a world gone mad.

Don't Rob a Gas Station If There's a Cop Standing Right Behind You

Matt Cherette · 10/03/11 08:52PM

When 21-year-old Stephen Daniel entered a Snellville, Georgia gas station and screamed, "Give me all the money!" recently, the store's manager obliged—what's more, you'll see he did so while smiling and laughing! Now I can't be certain, but the fact Snellville police officer B.W. Brown was standing right behind Daniel as he committed the crime is probably what the manager found so funny about it. Just a hunch. [via Consumerist]

One fund manager thinks the online coupon startup has seen its value fall to as low as $3 billion from $25 billion.

Sometimes you just have to laugh at the police state. Hey guys, are there enough of you there, you think? What if she scratches your eyeballs?!

When Air Travel Was Totally Cool

Brian Moylan · 10/03/11 03:45PM

With the new series Pan Am on TV, everyone is thinking about what air travel was like back when it was sophisticated. You know, the good old days when people dressed up to travel and airports were wonderful monuments of design. There are even pictures of this lost era!
