Scientists Discover How Germ Converts Pee into Rocket Fuel
Dutch scientists at the Radboud University Nijmegen have discovered how the germ anammox converts ammonia, which is found in urine, into the rocket fuel hydrazine. See, you and your ubiquitous bottle of Purell thought germs were a bad thing.
In a letter to the science journal Nature, the scientists claim to have finally isolated the protein complex that is responsible for making hydrazine and describe it as "beautifully red mixture." Wait, the last time I had a colored discharge and my pee was on fire, I got a prescription, not a letter in a scientific journal.
Anyway, the amount of rocket fuel created by the microbe isn't enough to power a jet or anything, but hopefully scientists can use this to figure out how to get all the humans up to a space station before we completely destroy our home planet. We're working our way to make sci-fi a reality every damn day.
