All the Teen Girls Wanna Be Tagged by Banksy

Richard Lawson · 01/14/10 03:35PM

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then mass-market imitation must really stroke one's ego. Just ask renegade street artist Banksy, whose iconic 'Balloon Girl' work has been knocked-off and slapped on a hoodie by junk-clothier Forever 21. [TheFrisky]

Sarah Jessica Parker Got a New Job Today

cityfile · 01/14/10 12:55PM

That rumor yesterday about Sarah Jessica Parker teaming up with Halston? It's true, although what she'll be doing for the label wasn't disclosed, other than she'll have an "active design role" of some kind. Oh, and Halston co-owner Harvey Weinstein didn't have anything to do with the decision. It was the other investor in Halston, which owns a stake in Polaroid and got Lady Gaga to come aboard as the brand's "creative director," that made it happen. Not to mention Harvey has more pressing issues to worry about. [People, NYM]

Is This Halston's New Creative Director?

cityfile · 01/13/10 02:29PM

Struggling movie mogul Harvey Weinstein hasn't had much success reviving Halston since buying a stake in the once storied fashion brand back in 2007. But he may have a new trick up his sleeve! (And he may be taking inspiration from Lindsay Lohan, of all people.) Rumor has it Halston is in negotiations with Sarah Jessica Parker—award-winning actress and noted perfume expert—to have her sign on as the company's creative or design director. [E!, Vogue]

H&M Changes Its Tune

cityfile · 01/07/10 09:37AM

That was quick. Yesterday, the Times revealed that stores like H&M destroyed unsold merchandise rather than give it to the needy. Now the Swedish retailer says it plans to make sure it doesn't happen again, since it isn't the company's "standard practice." [NYT, previously]

H&M Has an Appetite for Destruction

What do you think retail chains like H&M do with all the perfectly good clothing that they don't manage to sell? If you guessed "slash it to shreds and dump it in the garbage," give yourself a prize.

Marc Jacobs May Now Be Married

cityfile · 01/05/10 11:15AM

Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone were supposed to get married in Provincetown this past summer. They never ended up going through with it for whatever reason, although that may have changed over New Year's vacation. According to the fashion blog Styleexperts, the couple tied the knot in a private ceremony on St. Barts earlier this week, an event that was hosted by art dealer Larry Gagosian and which featured a cake topped with an edible Jacobs (sans shirt), Martone (dressed in a tux), and two of their dogs. The World Only Needs One LEGO-Inspired Shoe

cityfile · 12/17/09 02:26PM

When Steve Madden introduced its horrific Multi-Color Bukled Heel last year, it was pretty clear where inspiration for the shoe had come from: Balenciaga's equally unattractive Closed Front Cage Sandals With Ankle Pads, which were part of its Fall '07 line, cost $4,175 and graced the feet of Beyoncé. "Steve Madden has gone too far this time," wrote one fashion blogger galled by the obvious copy. It seems Balenciaga was thinking the same thing! On Monday, it slapped Steve Madden with a lawsuit. The court documents are below.

Hilarious Old Snuggie Ancestor Unearthed

Hamilton Nolan · 12/16/09 04:55PM

Robe scientists have discovered the earliest known Snuggie/ Slanket ancestor: "The Bundler." Which is apparently just footie pajamas held on with rubber bands? "Deliciously sexy on her, smoothly good-looking on him." No it's not. [Flickr via Copyranter. Click to enlarge.]

Madonna Sacrifices, Lives to Tell

cityfile · 12/16/09 03:55PM

You have to give Madonna an enormous amount of credit for trying to do something she likely hasn't attempted since the early '80s. As part of her new ad campaign for Dolce & Gabbana, Madge can be seen washing dishes. In a sink. Wth her own two hands. That look of confusion on her face isn't accidental! [NBC]

Lindsay Lohan, Destroyer of Careers

cityfile · 12/16/09 12:01PM

It's been two months since Emanuel Ungaro CEO Mounir Moufarrige made the worst decision of his career and hired a young woman by the name of Lindsay Lohan as the struggling fashion house's "artistic adviser." And now he's out the door. Moufarrige stepped down as CEO today, and while Lohan still has a job for the time being, that may very well change in the near future. Then again, that would only leave her more time to save the universe, so things should work out okay either way. [AP]

One Burch Follows Another

cityfile · 12/15/09 01:04PM

Fashion designer Tory Burch and her ex-husband, venture capitalist Chris Burch, went their separate ways back in 2006. But it looks like the couple is of one mind when it comes to Hamptons real estate. Over the summer, Tory received permission to tear down her Southampton home and upgrade to something bigger and better, a plan she abandoned recently since she's now preparing to move to a much grander—and much more expensive—estate nearby. And now Chris is looking to gussy up his digs in Southampton, too.
